Clausius Inequality
𝑑𝑄
∮ ≤0
𝑇
The equality holds good for a reversible cycle and the inequality holds good for an irreversible cycle.
The complete expression is known as Clausius Inequality.
𝑑𝑄 = 𝑇 𝑑𝑆
𝜃1 𝑄2
∮ 𝑑𝑆 = − = 0 ⇒ 𝑆 = 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡

Change in Entropy in an Irreversible Process
In an irreversible process like conduction or radiation, heat is lost by a body at a higher
temperature T1 and is gained by a body at a lower temperature T2. Here T1>T2.
Entropy of a perfect gas
Consider unit mass of a perfect gas, occupying a volume V at Pressure P and temperature T. Let dQ
be the heat supplied to the gas. Then according to first law of thermodynamics,
Thermodynamic Potentials/Functions
The state of a system can be completely described by any two of the state variables P, V, T, S
and U. Out of these, U is the internal energy and can be determined by the remaining four.
According to first law of thermodynamics,
