surface analysis: making analysis without knowing the film.

unbalanced composition might say us that something is wrong with the subjects.
color theory:
director and cinematographer uses color consciously and in a temathic way.
Impact of color in narration: color in a film can build harmony or tension in a
scene. it can also bring attention to a key theme.
When telling a story color can,
elicit psychological reactions
draw focus to significant details
set the tone of the movie
represent character traits

There are 4 primar ways color is used in film:


color symbolism for expressions
for foreshadowing
to distinguish between different time/place
to ıllustrate change in film narrative or character's psychology
COLOR AS FILTER:
overall color of the image is altered by color filter.
it can mean many things. it can be made for a specific reason. or out of necessity.
or just for esthetic.
in sci-fi it's necessity. yellow or orange filter is used.
ENVİRONMENTAL COLOR:
Through props, objects. this is totally about mis-en-scene
coloured objects are used. specific objects are colored in a such a way that create
a color palette.
characters generally are not aware of that fact. it's made for us.
COLOR THROUGH COSTUME:
Costumes are designed to create color contrast or symmetry between the characters.
ıf there is development throughout the film you may see a shift in color of
costumes of a certain character.
or sometimes a specific character always wear a specific color.
this specifically mise-en-scene reletad either.
elizabeth movie: elizabeth starts wear only white dresses after she declines to
marry with another king.
ISOLATED COLOR:
It is so i catching. selective color usage
this means color is used specificly. this may something about that character.
or one character or scene that is more or less important.
this is not about mis-en-scene. this is totally editing.

Colors:
primary: red,yellow,blue
secondary:orange,green,purple you mix two primary colours
teritary: blue-purple, red-purple, red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-
green when you mix primary and a secondery color
COLOR THEORY:
Three main components of color:
HUE: the color itself, pure spectrum colors. red,orange,yellow
SATURATION: Intensity of the color. how livid that color is. when you have
saturated yellow it is intense. refers to the purity, intensity of that color.
BRIGHTNESS: the darkness or lightness of a color.
Colors of the same hue and saturation, but different lightness are called tints and
shades.
Colors of the same hue and lightness, but of different saturation are called tones.
Aspects of HUE:
TINT: a mixture of a color with white, which increase lightness
SHADE: a mixture of a color with black, which increases darkness
TONE: ıt is produced either by mixing color with grey or both by tinting and
shading. tone is a general term to describe a colors lightness and darkness.
MEANINGS OF COLOURS:
color effects mood. colors can also symbolize some specific emotions. exp. blue can
symbolize detachment.
futuristic movies use blue to show us the lack of notion and alienation in that
society.

Yellow: usually used for caution signs. we identify it with the sun.
intense bright yellow symbolizes obsession. most dispesid color ex: taxi driver or
kill bill
when you desaturate yellow meaning changes. the more it is lightened the more
elagant it becomes. almost white yellow is a sign for sophistication.
pale yellow: half white half yellow is a sign for innocence. ex: in rosemary's baby
when use as light or filter. it has a very aggressive quality and it is
treathining.
when you have a honey yellow brownish, golden yellow mostly parralel to memories or
dreams.
when a hollywood goes to egypt, middle east, mexico third world countries are
represented with yellow filter usage. because that kind of yellow bring dirt to a
scene.

Red: is power. that power does not come with a moral imperative. color of action
whenever you see a bright red you can take it as a warning.
warm red, orange red tend to be sensual and lusty.
dark red--burgundy represent maturity
rose on the other hand is created with adding blue into bright red. and it
represent romance.

Blue: tranquility or sadness. it's the color to think to not to act.


it may signal passiveness, melancholy, nostalgia, lethargy
when you long for the past, constantly think about the past
when we are talking about gray-blue, symbolizes powerlesness
steel blue greenish gray blue, and dark blue are the colors most associated with
intellect, least associated with sensual. governaces and maiden ladies prefer dark
blue.
blue is the color of inertia.(hareketsizlik)
turkuvaz (mavi daha fazla) cyan(yeşil daha fazla), hangisi daha fazlaysa anlam ona
kayıyor teritarylerde. ex: joker at first he wears cyan, later on as he wears green
and red. no opennes left.
blue is the coolest color. red is the warmest.

Orange: orange skies is negative like in distopik films. it is like toxic skies.
but if it is a rom com orange filter can be read as romantic
orange at the same time connotes naivity.
terracotta,sienna are earth colors. positive colors.

Green: is a dicotomious color. because of this green is used as a powerfull tool of


irony.
symbolize ilness or evilness because of the connations with virus and bacteria.
sometimes envy, jealousy
healthy,vital,poisinousicorrupt,envious,greed

Purple: symbolizes not this worldly, mystical, paranormal


at the same time royalness. because color purple was really expensive. so only
royalties were able to wear it.
ın a lot of films if someone wears purple dies.
purple is the color of transformation. purple may symbolize that someone or
something is gonna get lost or gonna transform
TYPES OF COLOR SCHEME:
Monochromatic Colo scheme: you have one hue and it is extended out using shades,
tones and tints.
ex: Matrix
Complementary color scheme: when two colors from opposite side of the color wheel
are used in conjunction with one another to form the color palettes. or warm vs
cool which is associated with internal conflict.
ex. amelie
Analogous color scheme: utilizes colors that are next to one another on the
complementary color wheel. it creates a harmonious feeling.
ex:children of men, traffic
Triadic color scheme: üçlü. three colors that are evenly spaced in the
complementary color wheel are used in conjuction. generally one is used as dominant
one and the others used iin complementary fashion. this is less commmon since it
can look a bit cartoonish.
Symbolism in movie color palettes:
Discordant color: when you use the color that is very noticable and visible it may
pin point some detail, it makes you look at it. not in harmony with the rest of the
scene.
ex: blue in amelie, red in sixth sense, red in we should talk about kevin.
Associative color: you would create associations with a certain color to represent
a character or theme. connects visual spectacle with emotional storytelling.
ex: grand budapest hotel different time different color palettes, the dark knight
purple blue with joker black with batman, the godfather whenever you see a orange
sombody dies it is made by props, empire strikes back red evil blue good luke white
vader black, kill bill yellow
Transitional color usage: one single character changes color. this could be shift
in mood or tone.
ex: breaking bad teacher walter white vs heisenberg, elizabeth changes through
completing her character development, when we talk about two act narrative
structure color palette may change between first act and second act.
