9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION
10
11 TO CONGRATULATE LULA MAE BILLINGS WOODS OF
12 MARLBORO COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE
13 HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS
14 BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY YEARS OF
15 CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
16
17 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of
18 Representatives are delighted to learn that Lula Mae Billings Woods
19 will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on August 14, 2016; and
20
21 Whereas, born on August 14, 1916, in the early part of the twentieth
22 century, she has witnessed many remarkable social changes,
23 technological innovations, and international developments that have
24 spanned the globe from that time into the second decade of the
25 twenty-first century; and
26
27 Whereas, one of seven children born to Elese Thomas Billings and
28 James Arthur Billings on Ed Rowe’s Plantation near Cheraw, young
29 Lula Mae walked to attend Lower Marlboro School in Bennettsville
30 with her siblings, carrying her dinner in a two-pound bucket; and
31
32 Whereas, the school chaplain taught Bible lessons every day, and
33 her mother often sat on the floor at home with the children in a circle
34 around her while she read them the Scriptures, explaining how the
35 passage related to daily life, lessons she has passed down; and
36
37 Whereas, her father, a farmer and later an employee at Morris
38 Funeral Home, died when she was fifteen, and her family moved to
39 live with her grandmother, Amanda Peterkin. She attended revival
40 meetings in Hebron at St. Beaulah Baptist Church where she met
41 Willie Woods, Jr., and their friendship grew as they walked together
42 to the meetings; and

1
2 Whereas, three days after her nineteenth birthday, she married her
3 friend, Mr. Woods, and they lived in Hebron, where she became a
4 member of Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church in 1937; and
5
6 Whereas, together they reared ten fine children, and the family
7 raised hogs and chickens and grew vegetables. Besides caring for
8 the children, Mrs. Woods picked cotton and tobacco in the fields, as
9 did the eight oldest children as they grew; and
10
11 Whereas, Mr. Woods commuted to Fort Bragg to build the barracks,
12 and at the completion of the work, the family moved to Clio, where
13 Mr. Woods worked for the Ulrich and Long Company pouring
14 cement. After he retired, he worked as a custodian at a school and
15 continued to pour cement as an independent contractor; and
16
17 Whereas, later in life, Mrs. Woods was hired as a caregiver at
18 Dundee Nursing Home in Bennettsville, working there until she
19 retired. She was widely recognized by family members and her
20 employers for the excellent care she provided for the patients; and
21
22 Whereas, her children blessed her with the affection of forty
23 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and several
24 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she dearly loves. Her family
25 refers to her as “Queen”; and
26
27 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of
28 Representatives are pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina
29 at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday and join with her
30 family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this
31 extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,
32
33 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
34
35 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives,
36 by this resolution, congratulate Lula Mae Billings Woods of
37 Marlboro County on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday and
38 wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many years of continued
