Open Loop & Closed Loop System

The document provides information about Nityananda Ghosh, a student in the 5th semester of Applied Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering at an unnamed university with roll number 10505522026. It then discusses open loop and closed loop control systems, providing examples of each type including a clothes dryer and air conditioner.

Control
• An integral part of any industrial society
• Many applications including transportation,
Systems automation, manufacturing, home appliances,…
• Helped exploration of the oceans and space
• Examples: –
 Temperature control
 Flight control
 Process control

Control System
• Openloop:
 Theoutput variables donot affectthe inputvariables
 Thesystem will followthe desired referencecommands if no unpredictable effects

Comparison occur
 It can compensatefor disturbancesthatare takeninto account
 It does not changethe system stability

• Closedloop:
 Theoutput variables doaffectthe input variables in order to maintain a desired
systembehavior
 Requiresmeasurement(controlledvariables or other variables)

 Requirescontrolerrorscomputedas the difference between the controlledvariable

and the reference command
 Computescontrolinputs based on the controlerrorssuch that the controlerror is
minimized
 Ableto rejectthe effectof disturbances
 Can makethe system unstable, where the controlledvariables grow without bound

Example-
 The clothes dryer is one of the examples of the
open-loop control system. In this, the control action

Open Loop
can be done physically through the operator.
Based on the clothing’s wetness, the operator will

System
fix the timer to 30 minutes. So after that, the timer
will discontinue even after the machine clothes are
wet.
The dryer in the machine will stop functioning even
if the preferred output is not attained. This displays
that the control system doesn’t feedback. In this
system, the controller of the system is the timer.
Example-
 The best example of the closed-loop control
system is AC or air conditioner. The AC controls

Open Loop
the temperature by evaluating it with the nearby
temperature. The evaluation of temperature can be

System
done through the thermostat. Once the air
conditioner gives the error signal is the main
difference between the room and the surrounding
temperature. So the thermostat will control the
compressor.
These systems are accurate, expensive, reliable,
and requires high maintenance.
