ACTIVITY
PRACTICE
1 WORKSHEET (INDIVIDUAL)
Places client’s/patient’s welfare at the center of practice (Philippine Pharmacist’s Association, n.d.).
This competency standard is important when handling patients because the pharmacists put the
patient’s welfare above everything else. For example, a patient is demanding to purchase an ethical
drug without a prescription; the pharmacist must not dispense the medicine for the welfare of the
patient. Strict adherence to rules for the patient is an important part in the community.
A pharmacist must be able to handle professionals and different sets of patients in the community.
When dealing with other healthcare professionals such as a doctor or a dentist, the pharmacist must
be able to communicate well their information and concerns at their level. When dealing with
patients, the pharmacists must be able to communicate in layman’s terms and not in jargons for them
to understand the protocols in using their medicine.
3. Choose ONE competency standard for the practice area community, hospital, and institutional
pharmacy and answer the following questions:
Selected competency standard in the practice area community, hospital, and institutional
pharmacy:
Counsels client/patient on the safe and judicious use of medicines and other health products
(Philippine Pharmacist’s Association, n.d.).
Based on your knowledge and lectures, how is this competency standard being met/fulfilled
by Filipino pharmacists in the community setting (maximum of 4 sentences)?
Based on the lectures in the internship, this standard is being met through the use of the pharmacy’s
“gamot guide” which is a manual that serves as an instruction given to patients after they have
purchased the medicine. When patients go to the pharmacy to ask about an illness or medicine, the
pharmacist takes charge of answering all questions.
Identify TWO (2) gaps in the community pharmacy related to the competency standard.
Explain (maximum of 6 sentences).
One gap in the community practice is that counseling is not properly given to the patient. Due to the
volume of the workload, the patients are only entertained when medicines are bought. The patients
are also in a hurry that they cannot afford to be counseled by the pharmacist. Another gap in the
practice is the lack of trust of the patients towards pharmacist. The health system in the country is
doctor-centric and in my experience, it shows that some patients are not trusting the information
given by the pharmacist and they only trust their doctor in the information of their medicines.
From the two gaps previously identified, choose ONE and give ONE opportunity (e.g. specific
provisions in RA 10918, emerging services, etc.) that can be used to address this gap in
practice (maximum of 4 sentences).
While counseling cannot be done in the pharmacy, it is important to ensure that patients know the
impact of the medicines in their health. With the help of modern technology, it is now possible to
counsel the patients through phone calls and video calls. Different modes of communication can be
used to make sure that patients are well-informed. Telecommunication is a great way to address this
gap in the lack of time of the pharmacist or the patient.
4. From the GPP standards, choose ONE role. From the chosen role, choose ONE function. Then,
identify how this function is currently being met by Filipino pharmacists in the community setting.
Explain.
Selected role:
Provide effective medication therapy management (International Pharmaceutical Federation, 2011).
Selected function:
Monitor patient progress and outcomes (International Pharmaceutical Federation, 2011).
How is this function being met by Filipino pharmacists in the community setting (maximum of
4 sentences)?
Based on my experience in the community pharmacy, the regular customers which are usually taking
maintenance medications always checks their blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol in the
pharmacy. They are regularly checked by the staff and they are always encouraged to go to the free
consultation services with the doctor twice a month in the pharmacy. This practice helps the patient
monitor their health and be updated with their prescription medicines.
