Laboratory Manual:
BIOLOGY 2011/2021 Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory Manual 2021 (ISBN 978-1-5339-
2312-7), by the Middle Tennessee State University Department of Biology. [Do NOT buy a used copy]
Equipment Information:
Gloves are available in the lab.
You will need to bring your own goggles to participate sheep and cow organ dissections. Cat dissection
will be conducted the second semester also requiring goggles. Goggles are available in the bookstore or
at Lowe’s or Home Depot.
You are strongly encouraged to get a set of erasable color pencils. Drawing pictures and coloring in
pictures is a good way help better visualize and learn the anatomy. Some colored pencils will be in lab.
You are also strongly encouraged to make good use of the camera on your cellphone. Taking pictures
of models you have photographed is a great way to make your own custom study guides. Taking
pictures of labeled models and microscope slides is an appropriate use of such devises. Inappropriate
use of cell phones to check social media or to cheat will not be tolerated though.
Communication with Instructor: Email me using jcjackson@mtsu.edu I will endeavor to reply to all emails
sent Monday through Friday within 24 hours. On occasion if I am very busy it may take up 48 hours for me to
answer your email. I do not answer emails on weekends or holidays as that time belongs to my family. Do NOT
message me through D2L as I will rarely IF EVER check those messages. In the event of a course-based
emergency then you may TEXT me at 515-451-1293. Do NOT call as I don’t answer my phone unless I know
the number. Include your section number on all things submitted (e.g. assignments or email).
Missed Lab: IF a lab must be missed, you must notify your lab instructor AS SOON AS IS POSSIBLE (email is
the most appropriate method because this can be documented). Depending on circumstances you and your
instructor will work together to determine the best course of action.
Late to Lab: Most quizzes are given at the very beginning of lab. Arriving late will cause you miss quiz
questions or the quiz entirely costing you valuable points. If you miss a quiz or do badly on a quiz you can NOT
make up a quiz. Only ONE quiz grade is dropped at the end of the semester so use that drop judiciously.
Student Code of Conduct: Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Your answers on individual
assignments must be your own original thoughts and where applicable, all responses should be written in your
own original words. Sharing work or copying and pasting directly from sources is plagiarism! Talking to other
students and using a cellphone or smart watch for any reason during an exam will be considered evidence of
cheating. Each offense will result in a grade of “0” which for an exam will almost certainly result in a failing
grade for the lab overall.
Grades: Your lab grade (in BIOL 2011) is based on the following:
Practicals (100 points each): A practical is a major exam where you will be tested on your ability to identify
and recall information related to anatomical models and microscope setups. The practicals consist of stations
set up around the classroom. Each station will have a model, microscope, or picture. You will be asked 2 to 4
questions at each station. You will have about 90 seconds at each station before you will be required to move
to the next station. Afterwards students will be allowed to revisit a few stations as needed with no more than 1
student allowed at each station. Cheating will be dealt with harshly. These exams are high stakes, but it is NOT
worth it to cheat. Practicals are NOT setup by your lab instructor, but by a group that includes at least one
lecture instructor and several graduate students. So study EVERYTHING in the lab manual. Practical
questions will be changed throughout the week so do NOT rely on gossip from classmates.
Quizzes (4 points each): Will consist of 4 to 8 questions. Anything listed in the lab manual is open game on
quizzes regardless of whether it was one of the things talked about by your instructor. Quizzes will consist of
the instructor walking around the classroom and testing you over your knowledge of models previously studied.
When studying each week pay particular attention to the activities in the lab manual and to any material that is
boldened in the lab manual. Also pay particular attention to anything I previously informally quizzed you on.
About 2/3rds of quiz questions will consist of things that I will have previously informally quizzed students over
while walking around the room helping you study models.
Attendance/Participation (2 points each): Attendance in the lab is required and expected. Use your class
time wisely. Labs will consist of several brief presentations each followed by an activity and time to study the
models/microscope slides. While studying models or looking at microscope slides your instructor will move
around the room and informally quiz tables over the models. If you miss a lab for any reason, it is imperative
that you find a way to learn the material. Reviewing class recordings will not get you experience identifying
features on models. Forming study groups with your table partners not only helps you prepare for quizzes and
practical but also gives you resources should you miss a lab. Each lab you and your students at your table
should be taking pictures and creating shared study aids. There will be some “open lab” periods scheduled
when you may come to the classroom and review models and microscope slides, but these are first come first
serve, open to all students in all labs, and might not be scheduled when you are available. So always come to
lab unless it is an emergency. In the last 10 minutes of each lab you will show a specified activity to your
instructor to earn your attendance and participation points.
Osmosis Lab Report (30 points): This will be the only writing assignment for this lab. You will be graded on
your ability to accurately and reasonably communicate the reasoning and findings of a scientific investigation
you conduct in lab. This will be worth as much as all your quizzes combined so put an appropriate amount of
effort in to completing this task. You will perform an experiment in lab to test a hypothesis regarding the nature
of eggs. You will need to use an Excel file setup to automatically graph your results once you input the data
you will collect. You will be turning in a written report. You will need to carefully follow the directions provided in
the rubric that will be provided. You will have a couple weeks to write these up. It will take me several weeks to
get these graded and returned to you.
Reflexes and Senses Worksheet (19 points): This will be an in-class activity. This a bit of low-pressure fun
and learning towards the end of the semester that can easily be completed during lab.
Check your grades on D2L: Your lab grades will be recorded every couple of weeks in D2L. It is your
responsibility to check your grade and report inconsistencies to the instructor. You will be given about a week
to review your final grade at the end of the semester. Lab grades will NOT be amended after grades are
submitted to the lecture instructor at the end of the semester.
Final Note: All information in the syllabus is subject to change. Changes will be communicated in-person and
via D2L news announcements. Changes will be announced as soon as is possible but may occur at any time.
