Compare and contrast the

presentation of the same topic
in different multi-
modal texts
I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
A. (Knowledge) Identify examples of Multi-Modal Texts in presenting
a specific idea

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preliminaries
Review/Drill:
 Let’s recall our previous lesson by answering the
following questions:
How will you link opinions and reasons when writing
argumentative essay?
What are the Language Features of Argumentative Essay?
B. Motivation:
 I have here a poster and a video, I want everyone to share
your idea about it. Take note, all opinions are correct since it
is solely based on your own perception.

Motive Question:
 What do you think is the idea being presented to both
modes, video and photo?

 What you have seen are examples of Multimodal Texts in

presenting a specific idea

C. Developmental Activities

1. Presentation
 Today, we will be going to study the different multimodal text
and its characteristics. But before we finally carry on to our
lesson proper, I have here the objectives that I want you to
attain at the end of our discussion. Can anyone read aloud?
(see objectives on page 1)
 Based on this picture, what do you think is the multimodal text
used to present information? I will be giving 2 points to those
who will share an idea. Is it a poster, infographic, or a video?

 What about this? (Showing the video clip). What multimodal

text was used to convey information? Is it Infographic,
Poster, or Video?”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vdPQX9XQTE
 What about this? (Showing the infographic). What
multimodal text was used to convey information? Is it
Infographic, Poster, or Video?”
 Based on the information presented in the picture and video,
what do you think are their similarities?

2. Discussion

 The picture and video are examples of several Multimodal

Texts used to present ideas. Why do you think it is called
multimodal?

It is called Multimodal text because the idea was conveyed

through the combination of text, still images, audio. As you
can see, the words, visuals, and audio are used together.

What is Multimodal Text?

While the development of multimodal literacy is strongly associated

with the growth of digital communication technologies, multimodal is not
synonymous with digital. The choice of media for multimodal text creation is
therefore, always an important consideration.

A multimodal text can be paper – such as books, comics, posters.

A multimodal text can be digital – from slide presentations,
e-books, blogs, e-posters, web pages, and social media, through to
animation, film, and video games.
A multimodal text can be live – a performance or an event.
And, a multimodal text can be transmedia– where the story is told
using ‘multiple delivery channels’ through a combination of media
platforms, for example, book, comic, magazine, film, web series, and video
game mediums all working as part of the same story.
(Source:

A text may be defined as multimodal when it combines two or more semiotic

systems. There are five semiotic systems in total:

1. Linguistic: comprising aspects such as vocabulary, generic structure, and

the grammar of an oral and written language.

2. Visual: comprising aspects such as color, vectors, and viewpoint in still

and moving images.
3. Audio: comprising aspects such as volume, pitch, and rhythm of music
and sound effects.
4. Gestural: comprising aspects such as movement, speed, and stillness in
facial expression and body language.
5. Spatial: comprising aspects such as proximity, direction, the position of
layout, and organization of objects in space.

Multimodal texts can be delivered via different media or technologies.

They may be live, paper, or digital. (Bull and Anstey, 2010)

“There are several examples of multimodal text, but the following three
examples are the most commonly used:

Infographics - it prioritizes quantifiable values and convert them into

complex data visualizations. Infographics consist of charts, images, and
some text that explains the topic in a straightforward way.

Poster - presents information clearly but doesn’t draw on data. It

addresses information in different categories using numbers or words to
represent quantitative data. Typically, posters include both textual and
graphic elements, although a poster may be either wholly graphical or
wholly text. Posters are designed to be both eye-catching and
informative.

Video - has been considered a multi-modal text since words, visuals,

and audio are used together for a stronger effect.

3. Application
Group Activity:
Group 1: Presentation using graphic organizer
Now, let’s do an activity. Divide the class into three. Get your
manila paper, crayons, and markers. Your task is to compare and
contrast as to how the topic about Climate Change is presented to the
three examples of multimodal texts. You can use any type of an
organizational chart like Venn diagram, tables or anything you prefer. I
will be giving you 15 minutes to answer and present it to the class by
explaining why you came up with it. I will be giving additional 10 points
to the pair who can justify their answer.”

Group 2: Live performance- Can be pantomime (using nonverbal cues)

Present a pantomime about how to save our mother nature remember to

include multimodal elements that are gestural: comprising aspects such as
movement, speed, and stillness in facial expression and bodyout language.
Group 3: Poster, infographic and print ad making

Create a poster, infographic and print ad about global warming awareness

campaign. Use multimodal elements.

4. Abstraction/Valuing
ABSTRACTION: How will you compose texts which include
multimodal elements?

VALUING: Integration: How will you deliver an accurate information

using multimodal text?

Here’s the scoring rubric for the class presentation:

Organization

(10 points)

5The type of presentation is appropriate for the topic and audience.

5 Information is presented in a logical sequence.

Content
(20 points)
5Introduction is attention-getting, lays out the problem well, and establishes a
framework for the rest of the presentation.
5 Technical terms are well-defined in language appropriate for the target
audience.
5 Presentation contains accurate information.
5 Material included is relevant to the overall message/purpose.
Presentation

(20 points)
5 Speaker maintains good eye contact with the audience and is appropriately
animated (e.g., gestures, moving around, etc.).
5 Speaker uses a clear, audible voice.
5 Visual aids are well prepared, informative, effective, and not distracting.
5Length of presentation is within the assigned time limits.

5. Evaluation:
IT Integration
Directions: Using any social media platform, create your infographic news.
Follow the tips in creating infographic news. Screenshot your answers and
post it on a short bond paper (to be posted in your portfolio)

Creating a News Article on an Infographic

Infographics are widely used in educational content, website portals,

news channels, and newspapers. In the Philippines newspapers also use
various infographics primarily to present statistical data using charts,
diagrams, graphs, tables, maps, lists, etc.

An example news article on infographic:

Here are the differences in community quarantine protocols in

General Community Quarantine (GCQ) and Modified General Community
Quarantine (MGCQ) areas based on the guidelines issued by the InterAgency
Task Force on Emerging and Infectious Diseases (IATF):
Tips in Creating news article on an infographic

• Find an in-demand topic

The key is finding a topic that your audience cares about. It is timely and
relevant. It can be something that your readers have a vested interest in.
• Research, Plan and Write
Once you have decided on your idea, you will need to compile the data that
your infographic will illustrate.
To make sure you are telling a compelling story from the beginning to the end
of your infographic. The one that links facts, figures, and visuals together. You
should take the time to plan the structure and writing of your infographic
content.
The visual structure of your information should be clear and logical, and the
writing should communicate with your audience in a way that best resonates
with
them.
• Tell a story
The best-performing infographic tells the story that holds people’s interest so
that they read it from start to finish. Which made them more likely to share it.
