Topical Issue of SN Computer Science

Artificial Intelligence for Next-generation Edge Networks
Submission Deadline: 30th September 2023
Guest Editors: Dr. Mainak Adhikari, IIIT Lucknow, India; Dr. Abhishek Hazra,
National University of Singapore, Singapore; Dr. Sudarshan Nandy, VIT
University, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India
Aims and Scope
Edge computing enables data processing and storage to be done closer to
the data source as a result of the proliferation of internet-connected devices and the demand for low-
latency applications. The potential of edge computing has been further enhanced with the advent of 5G
networks, which have further increased their potential. However, managing these edge networks poses
significant challenges due to the heterogeneity of devices, the dynamic nature of traffic patterns, and the
need to maintain Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can play a crucial role
in addressing these challenges. AI algorithms can analyze network traffic patterns, predict demand and
congestion, and dynamically allocate resources to meet QoS requirements. Additionally, AI can also
enhance security by detecting and mitigating cyber-attacks in real time. Therefore, leveraging the power
of AI can enable next-generation edge networks to deliver faster, more reliable, and more secure services.
Various industries, such as healthcare, transportation, and manufacturing, have the potential to benefit
from AI in next-generation edge networks. For instance, AI algorithms analyze medical data from sensors
and wearables. In this way, patient health can be monitored in real-time and abnormalities can be
detected. Through AI-enabled intelligent traffic management, transportation can be optimized,
congestion reduced, and road safety improved. Through AI, manufacturing processes can be optimized by
predicting when maintenance is necessary by analyzing data from sensors embedded in machines,
thereby reducing cost and downtime. Therefore, the integration of AI into next-generation edge networks
has enormous potential for improving efficiency, productivity, and safety.

This issue aims to cover the emerging trends and technologies for edge networks to support the next next-
generation applications. Papers related to AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Optimization, Blockchain,
5G or beyond 5G solutions for edge networks, especially for domain-specific applications such as Smart
Healthcare, IoT, AR/VR/Metaverse, Industry 4.0/5.0, and transportation systems, are strongly encouraged
for this issue. Topics of interest for this issue include, but are not limited to:

• AI-based communication protocol for edge networks.

• Green communication for collaborative ML-enabled edge networks.
• ML for sustainable communication and computation in edge networks.
• Incorporation of 5G/6G-based communication technologies for AI-based edge networks.
