The device is in compliance with all relevant safety regulations concerning
information technology equipment, including electronic office machines for use
in an office environment.

Safety notices
Carefully read the following safety notices!
Warning
When operating electrical devices, certain parts of these devices are under
dangerous voltage.
Failure to comply with the warning notices could, therefore, result in death,
severe bodily injury, or considerable damage to property.
This device must be installed, connected, commissioned, maintained and re-
paired by qualified personnel. These personnel must be familiar with all repair
and maintenance tasks described in these operating instructions.
Error-free and safe operation of this device requires proper transport, storage,
location, installation and connection, as well as careful operation and mainte-
nance.
In addition to the warning notices given in the respective chapters, pay par-
ticular attention to the following notices:
• Observe the information in the Appendix "MASTERGUARD Series S
Technical Data" regarding environmental conditions when installing and
prior to commissioning the device.
• This device is not equipped with its own mains separation device. You
are, therefore, required to provide one (or two) mains separation device(s)
at the installation site.
• These mains separation devices for mains supply 1 and mains supply 2
must be provided with a warning plate on which the following is stated:
"Switch off the UPS supply prior to beginning work on this system!"
• When disconnecting the mains voltage, the connected loads continue to
be supplied with voltage by the battery and return voltage is present at the
input terminals of the UPS.
• During thunderstorms, data transfer cables must not be connected or dis-
connected.
• Ensure that no objects (e.g. jewelry chains, paper clips etc.) are left inside
of the device.

6SU 5691-6AA00-0AC0 7
Safety MASTERGUARD Series S

Emergency measures
In an emergency, immediately carry out the following steps:
• Open the external mains separation device
• Switch off the load.
• Put out any fires with an extinguisher appropriate for the batteries being
used.
• Never attempt to extinguish a fire with water since the batteries carry
voltage.

Danger areas
When the UPS is closed, parts which carry voltage cannot be touched. After
removing the cubicle panelling or terminal field covering, free the connection
terminals and rails, as well as exposed metal parts and other components from
dangerous voltages!
When working on an open UPS device, the corresponding safety measures
must be observed. The following danger is present even with disconnected
UPS:
Danger
The UPS contains capacitors which continue to store energy for a period of
time after the device has been disconnected from the mains supply(ies) and
battery. This voltage (> 500 V DC) is present at the battery terminals C2 and D2
and at the mains input filter as long as the option "amplified input filter“ is
used. For this reason, check that the UPS and the external mains separation
device are switched off and the battery fuses removed. Measure the voltage at
the battery terminals and at the mains input filter and wait until this has
dropped to 0 V or wait at least 5 min. after disconnecting before continuing
work. Failure to do this can lead to severe electrical shock and even death.

The MASTERGUARD Series S System

Function
The uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is connected between mains and the
electrical load. It protects the load from mains interruptions and power failures.

On-line Principle This UPS operates according to the on-line principle. In on-line operation, the
alternating current of the mains is converted into direct current. This DC volt-
age is used to simultaneously charge the battery and supply the inverter. The
inverter converts the direct current into interference-free alternating current
with a fixed frequency and amplitude. The connected loads are supplied with
this alternating current. This protects the load from mains supply disturbances
and provides a secure mains supply for electrical equipment (PCs, network
servers, multi-console systems).
Fig. 1: UPS in on-line operation
In case of a mains failure, the batteries provide uninterrupted power to the
loads.

Battery management The battery is charged and discharged, as well as monitored, with its own mi-
croprocessor. This ensures optimal usage of the batteries' usable lifetimes. For
details, see "Special features„.

Overload capacity In the event of overload (e.g. > 150 % of the nominal load) or inverter failure,
the load is supplied directly by the mains supply via the automatic bypass. As
soon as the system returns to normal operating conditions, it automatically
switches back to inverter operation.

Communication The UPS offers several interfaces for communication between the UPS and
computers. Further information is included in the Chapter "Communication"
starting on page 28.

Fig. 6: Control panel

The fault numbers for "alarm" or "fault" are displayed in the two-digit display
in on-line operation. In battery operation, the display switches between the
fault number and the estimated backup time in minutes. First, the fault number
of the last event is displayed for a short time (LED ALARM or LED FAULT
simultaneously illuminates), then the remaining backup time with the current
load (LED ALARM or LED FAULT is out) is shown for twice as long.
The TEST / RESET button serves as a function control for the LEDs of the
control panel and resets the UPS after the fault has been corrected. All LEDs
on the control panel illuminate for approx. 1.5 s after pressing the button in
normal operation (no warning or fault indicators present), followed by the last
five warning indicators appearing one after the other in the two-digit display. If
a fault occurs, pressing the button resets the audible signal and, once the fault
has been corrected, pressing the button brings the UPS into operation again.
The UPS can be switched between bypass and on-line operation using the key
switch. A PC can be connected to the service plug (SERVICE) via the serial
interface (RS232). Using the service software included with the unit, settings of
the UPS can be changed and the UPS data can be queried.

The MASTERGUARD Series S System MASTERGUARD Series S

Service bypass switch The service bypass switch (Fig. 7) is located inside of the UPS device.
Warning
The service bypass switch can only be accessed by qualified personnel with
the UPS device open.
Warning
During parallel operation of UPS units, the load switching function of the built-
in service bypass must be carried out by an external switching device (see
Chapter Parallel Operation on page 20).
The switch is needed for service work, as well as for commissioning and taking
in and out of operation. During all switching actions, the loads continue to be
supplied interruption free.

Fig. 7: Location of the service bypass switches

In switch position "1" (UPS operation) the UPS is in "on-line operation". De-
pending on the mains and load condition, the device can switch automatically
to "battery operation" or "bypass operation".

In switch position "2" the UPS is in operating mode "service bypass": all
UPS components are supplied with voltage. The loads are supplied directly
from the mains via the service bypass switch. This switch setting is designed
to test the UPS functions if the loads require continued voltage from the mains
at the same time.

Likewise, in switch position "3" the UPS is in operating mode "service by-
pass": with the battery isolator open, the UPS components are voltage free;
maintenance work on the UPS can, thus, be carried out.

14 6SU 5691-6AA00-0AC0
MASTERGUARD Series S The MASTERGUARD Series S System

Operating modes
The UPS can be operated in five different operating modes. These modes are
discussed below.

On-line operation The UPS normally operates in this mode. The connected loads are supplied
from the mains via the converter. The batteries are charged as necessary.
The inverter reliably filters mains disturbances and provides a stable, interfer-
ence-free supply to the load.
The LED ONLINE and the LED LINE illuminate when the UPS is in on-line
operation.

Fig. 8: Power flow in on-line From this operating mode, the UPS switches to battery operation if a mains
operation failure occurs. If an overload or short circuit occurs at the UPS output, or if
there is a fault in the inverter, the UPS switches to bypass operation.

Battery operation In this operating mode, the connected load is supplied from the batteries via
the inverter.
In the event of power failure, battery operation is automatically activated and
supplies the loads interruption free. If the power failure lasts longer than 30
sec., the UPS signals a fault condition.
In battery operation, the LED ONLINE on the control panel is on and the LED
LINE is off.
Fig. 9: Power flow in battery
operation
From this operating mode, the UPS automatically returns to on-line operation
within the backup time once the mains supply returns. If the power failure lasts
longer than the loads can be supplied by the battery, the UPS provides rele-
vant information via its interfaces. Computers can be automatically powered
down with additional software (optional).

6SU 5691-6AA00-0AC0 15
The MASTERGUARD Series S System MASTERGUARD Series S

Bypass operation In this operating mode, the connected loads are supplied from the mains via
the electronic bypass.
The electronic bypass serves to further ensure power to the loads. If an over-
load or short-circuit occurs, it is automatically activated to ensure uninterrupted
power to the loads.
The yellow BYPASS LED on the control panel illuminates.

Fig. 10: Power flow in bypass From this operating mode, the UPS automatically returns to on-line operation
operation after the fault is corrected.
Bypass operation can also be specifically selected from the control panel with
the key switch.

Service bypass In this operating mode, the connected loads are supplied directly from the
mains supply.
Service bypass is used to supply the loads with voltage during maintenance
work on the UPS.
In the operating mode service bypass, the service bypass switch is in setting
"2" or "3", depending on whether or not the UPS components should remain
under voltage.
Fig. 11: Power flow in service By turning the service bypass switch to setting "1", the UPS can be switched,
bypass operation
uniterrupted, into bypass operation (for further information see Section
"Commissioning" on page 55).

On-line operation and In on-line operation, the battery manager draws energy from both the mains
battery management and the batteries.
The following functions are automatically carried out:
• Battery circuit test for a short period of time.
• Battery conditioning over an extended period of time. The activation times
can be selected individually. The batteries are completely discharged and
then recharged again.

MASTERGUARD Series S Options and Accessories

Options and Accessories

Amplified EMC filter

The EMC filter limits the emission of electromagnetic interference. Using the
amplified EMC filter, all MASTERGUARD Series S Systems satisfy the re-
quirements according to FCC Part 15, Subpart J, Class A.
Your UPS is equipped with an amplified EMC filter if the order number on the
name-plate contains a "5" in the eleventh position: 6SU5 2xx-xxx5x-xxxx.

Additional input filter

The additional input filter reduces the total harmonic distortion of the input
current to 8%. If the filter becomes overloaded due to distortions from the
mains, it switches off automatically.
Your UPS contains this option if the order number on the name-plate contains
a "3" or "4" in the twelfth position:
6SU5 2xx-xxxx3-xxxx or 6SU5 2xx-xxxx4-xxxx.

Second mains supply

A second mains supply allows the inverter and bypass to be supplied from
separate mains sources. This provides an additional redundancy for the UPS.
The bypass is remains available here should the mains supply for the con-
verter fail. Because of the electrical isolation in the UPS, supplies 1 and 2
must be fed into the UPS from different transformers. Example: supply mains
1: office mains, supply mains 2: industrial mains (TN, IT).
Your UPS contains a second mains supply if the order number on the name-
Fig. 13: Block diagram of the plate contains a "2" or "4" in the twelfth position:
second mains supply 6SU5 2xx-xxxx2-xxxx or 6SU5 2xx-xxxx4-xxxx.

Extended battery management

Measuring systems monitor the battery blocks. The measured values are sent
to the battery manager via fibre optic cable for evaluation. Through battery
diagnosis and maintenance, operational security of the UPS system is further
increased.

Air filter cartridges for IP 20 or IP 21

For the base degree of protection IP20 (60 kVA) or IP 21 (10 to 40 kVA), the
UPS devices can be fitted with air filter cartridges at the air inlet of the power
section. The air inlet and air outlet of the battery (10 kVA to 20 kVA) are not
equipped with filter cartridges.

Options and Accessories MASTERGUARD Series S

IP31 with air filter cartridges

The UPS devices are also available in the increased protection class IP 31
(60 kVA). For this degree of protection, air filter cartridges are inserted into the
air inlet of the power section.
Devices with output of 60 kVA are equipped with a fitted cover.

MASTERGUARD communication software

MASTERGUARD communication software allows the UPS to communicate
with a computer. The following software is available:
PowerMon PowerMon is the MASTERGUARD communication software designed for a
stand-alone PC. PowerMon allows basic communication between UPS and
computer:
• Signals indicating "power failure" and "low battery" are sent to the com-
puter.
• To preserve battery resources, the UPS inverter can be switched off fol-
lowing a computer shutdown.
NetMon NetMon is the MASTERGUARD communication software for networks running
SNMP Protocol. The NetMon network adapter manages communication be-
tween UPS system and computer networks which operate on an ethernet with
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol).
PowerProtect PowerProtect is the convenient MASTERGUARD communication software for
regulating and controlling the UPS from a computer.
PowerProtect continually updates the following information: power delivery,
UPS input voltage, UPS status and all events, charging state of the battery in
normal operation, information on remaining backup time.
PowerProtect automatically records: voltage failures, voltage return, starting
and stopping of PowerProtect, status of the signal cable, alarms, shutdown
procedures.
PowerProtect graphically records as a function of time: input and output volt-
ages, output current, input frequency, battery voltage, battery charging state,
UPS temperature.
Details concerning the various software packages can be found in the product
information package "MASTERGUARD Software".

COT interface module

The COT interface module functions as an interface multiplier for the contact
interface X4 of the UPS (see page 30). This allows the signals made available
by the UPS at the potential-free interface X4 to be distributed in parallel to
several computer systems.
Up to 9 modules with 2 interfaces per module can be connected in parallel. A
secure 12 VDC supply is required.
Fig. 14: 2 x COT interface mod- The COT interface module can be mounted on a top hat rail (Fig. 14), e.g. in a
ules, parallel
telecommunications cabinet.

6SU 5691-6AA00-0AC0 19
Options and Accessories MASTERGUARD Series S

Parallel operation
Uninterruptible power supplies can be connected in parallel to increase power
capacity or for additional safety (redundancy). If the Masterguard Series S
units are equipped with the additional POB (Parallel Operation Board) compo-
nent, up to 4 of the same UPS blocks can be operated in parallel for increased
power capacity or redundancy.
Your UPS units are equipped with this option if the order number on the name
plate contains the letter "B" in the tenth position: 6SU52 xx-xxBxx-xxxx.
This option can also be added at a later time and is, therefore, available as an
accessory.
A multiple-block system is automatically regulated and controlled via the con-
troller of the individual UPS blocks. The available electronic bypasses in the
individual blocks work together just as all the corresponding inverters and di-
vide the load current between them. All necessary communication for parallel
operation is carried out via a shielded 25 conductor cable. Each UPS block is
shipped with an approximately 5m long cable which is sufficient for most in-
stallation requirements.
When planning the system and during installation, cables having the same
length are to be used between the input distribution and the feeds to the by-
pass and inverter (U1, V1, W1, N and U2, V2, W2), as well as from the UPS
outputs (U3, V3, W3, N) to the parallel connection point on the load side.
Length differences of 20% are allowed for power cable lengths of up to 20m.
For larger distances, cable lengths may not vary more than 10%.

Commissioning Commissioning of multiple-block systems must be carried out by appropriately

trained technicians.

System configurations Fig. 15 displays the schematic diagram of a 4-block system with two feeds,
Fig. 16 with a single feed.
UPS blocks have been designed for use with separate batteries (Fig. 18). Fig.
17 illustrates a 4-block system which uses a common battery. In this case, the
battery manager does not carry out autonomy time and capacity calculations.
The capacity display on the control panel (green LEDs BATTERY) is not used.

Communication be- UPS units exchange information between each other via the connector cable
tween the UPS blocks (25 pin connector) shipped with each unit. Fig. 19 displays the loop circuit
which is electronically monitored. The communication cables are shielded and
must be run separately and away from all power cables.

MASTERGUARD Series S Options and Accessories

Operation The built-in service bypass switch must always be in position 1 (UPS operation
- see page 15, service bypass switch). The key switches located on the control
panels are set from BYPASS to ONLINE. As soon as all switches are switched
to ONLINE, the inverters of the UPS units synchronize and take over the load.
The UPS in now in ONLINE operation. Switching from ONLINE to BYPASS
operation is carried out using the key switches of the UPS units. They are
switched, on after the other, to the BYPASS position. Once the last switch is
switched into the BYPASS position, all inverters switch off and all bypasses
switch on. The external service bypass may only be connected in bypass
(Fig.15, Fig.16).

Communication

Communications interfaces
The following possibilities exist for communicating between computers and the
MASTERGUARD Series S UPS:
Potential-free Various standard status indicators can be sent using the potential-free con-
contacts tacts. Potential-free contacts are available at the following interfaces:
• general purpose interface X2 for connection of computers running
MASTERGUARD communication software (optional)
• contact interface X4 for connecting to computers running
MASTERGUARD communication software (optional) and for individual
configurations
The 12 V voltage source at interfaces X2 and X4 can be loaded with a total of
50 mA.
Serial data Much more information can be sent using serial data transfer than is possible
transmission using potential-free contacts. There are a total of 3 interface connectors avail-
able for various purposes:
• general purpose interface X2 (RS 232) for connecting computers running
MASTERGUARD communication software (optional)
• service interface X3 (RS 232) for a computer running the service software
shipped with the system
• PC interface X5 (RS 485 capable). Several MASTERGUARD Series S
UPS devices can be operated from a single computer via this interface.
An individual address must be assigned to each UPS during commis-
sioning using the service software shipped with the system.
You can select X2 if it is used together with X3 or X5.
Interface locations All interfaces are mounted on the control panel circuit board (see Fig. 6 and
Fig. 25). X2, X4 and X5 are located on the rear of the control panel and can be
accessed only with the UPS open and the control panel folded out. The service
interface X3 is located at the front of the control panel and is accessible with
the UPS device closed.

Transportation
Warning
The MASTERGUARD Series S UPS devices and battery cubicles weigh, de-
pending on the version, between 300 and 750 kg and have a relatively high
center-of-mass. Pay attention to the center-of-mass markings on the device.
Use suitable means of transportation and secure the UPS against tipping over
when transporting. Improper transportation can lead to damage to the UPS and
battery cubicle as well as to bodily injury.
The UPS and battery cubicles are delivered packed on a transport pallet:
10 kVA Transport pallet 800 x 1200 mm (w x d) with instructions located on top. The
pallet raises the UPS device and battery cubicles approx. 145 mm.
15 - 60 kVA Transport pallet 1150 x 1200 (w x d), otherwise, same as with 10 kVA
Transport the UPS and battery cubicles on the pallet in the original packaging
with a suitable lifting truck to the storage or installation site.

Storage
If the UPS and battery cubicles will not be installed immediately, they can be
kept in storage. Observe the following:
• Store the UPS and battery cubicles in their original packaging.
• The storage conditions given in the appendix must be observed.
• When storing a UPS with built-in batteries (10-20 kVA) or battery cubicles,
the UPS should be installed within no more than 3 months in order to re-
charge the batteries.
• Pay attention to the times given for recharging the batteries. These values
are given on a sticker on the device or on the packaging.

Unpacking, rolling off pallet

Warning
The fastening bands are under high mechanical tension. Be careful of flying
parts when cutting through the bands!
Notice
The device should be unpacked at the installation site since the packaging
provides additional protection when transporting.

6SU 5691-6AA00-0AC0 31
Installation MASTERGUARD Series S

Unpack the device as follows:

• First remove the tension bands.
• Check the UPS and battery cubicle for physical damage and, in the event
of problems, inform the forwarding agent and, if necessary, your Siemens
agent.
• Check the name-plates on the UPS and battery cubicle against the deliv-
ery papers and your order. The name-plate can be viewed by removing
the front cover. It is also attached to the packaging.
• Remove the roller stops. (See Fig. 26)
• The cabinets are secured at the front and rear to the pallet with angled
brackets. Remove the angled brackets.
• Place the two ramps included with the shipment onto the end of the pallet.
Using the supplied profile, align the ramps so that they are parallel (See
Fig. 27)
• Slowly roll the cabinets from the pallet onto the ramps; depending on the
weight (see Appendix "Technical Data" on page 62) 2 - 3 people should
be on hand.

Fig. 26: Roller stop Fig. 27: Rolling off of the pallet

Warning
Push against the cabinets to prevent from rolling freely down the ramp. Due to
their large mass, they will otherwise roll off too quickly and, as a result, be-
come damaged. Secure the cabinets from tipping over sideways!
The following packaging materials should be saved for possible repacking:
• pallet with ramps
• roller stops and roller stops
• transport safety plate for battery cubicle
The cabinets can only be transported with these parts.
Dispose of the remaining packaging material according to the valid local
regulations.

MASTERGUARD Series S Installation

Transporting without packing material

There are locking rollers built into the feet of the cabinets. The rollers are not
locked when shipped and the cabinets can be easily moved to their final desti-
nation.
Warning
Due to their small diameter, the rollers are only suitable for moving the UPS
on a completely flat surface. Stones or grooves in the floor can block the roll-
ers. Moving the cabinets too quickly can damage them, cause them to fall over
and injure personnel.

Selecting an installation site

Pay attention to the following conditions when selecting an installation site:
Ambient temperature The ambient temperature for the UPS devices without batteries should be
between 0°C and +40°C. For continuous operation at temperatures up to a
maximum of +50°C, the maximum load must be reduced by 12% of the nomi-
nal load per 5°C.
The ambient temperature for UPS devices with batteries or battery cubicles
should be between +15°C and +25°C.
Be sure to provide sufficient cooling of the installation room so that the ambi-
ent temperature remains inside of the given limits. The heat emission values
for your UPS are given in the Appendix.
Be sure to also provide sufficient ventilation for the type of batteries used in
the UPS.
Installation altitude When operating the MASTERGUARD
Series S UPSs at altitudes above 1000m
M.S.L., the load must be reduced ac-
cording to Fig. 28 due to the reduced
cooling efficiency of the air. For installa-
tion altitudes up to 2000m M.S.L., no
reduction in load is required if the ambi-
ent temperature remains below 30°C.

Fig. 28: Allowable load as a function of the

installation altitude

Floor Be sure that the load carrying capacity of the floor is sufficient for the UPS and
batteries. The floor must be even and level.

6SU 5691-6AA00-0AC0 33
Installation MASTERGUARD Series S

Environmental Avoid damaging environmental conditions such as:

conditions • shaking
• dust
• aggressive atmospheres
• high humidity
Space requirements Provide for the following minimum distances:
• minimum of 50 cm between the top of the cabinet and the roof
• minimum of 20 cm between the rear of the cabinet and the wall
• sufficient space for the cable. The cable can be run either from the rear or
through a double floor
• no limitations on either side of the device

Placement

Danger
Whenever moving the cabinets, always secure them against tipping over
sideways. The cabinets may not be braced with lifting devices!
Move the UPS and the battery cubicle on their rollers into the their final instal-
lation location and lock the feet as follows:
• Screw down the covers of the rollers until the rollers have disappeared
(see Fig. 29).
• Open the battery cubicle and remove the transport plate, marked in red.

Fig. 29: Locking the feet

Notice
If the device is brought in from a cold environment, moisture condensation can
occur. Before commissioning the device, it must be completely dry. Therefore,
an acclimation time of two hours is required.

MASTERGUARD Series S Installation

Connecting mains
Danger
The UPS is connected to 208/120 V three phase mains; DC voltages up to
500 V are additionally present in the battery circuit. Installation must only be
carried out by qualified personnel who observe the notices in these operating
instructions and the regulations of the local electricity provider. The UPS de-
vices create a large leakage current; therefore, connect to ground prior to
commissioning.
Improper connection can damage the device and lead to injuries and possibly
death of personnel.
Notice
This device is not equipped with its own mains separation device. You are,
therefore, required to provide a mains separation device at the installation site.
It must be installed near the device and labelled as the mains separation de-
vice for the UPS.
The mains separation device and all further separation switches must have a
warning sign with the following or similar wording: "Switch off the UPS supply
before beginning work on this system! "
Carry out the mains connection as follows:
• Use cable cross sections and fuses in according to
Table 5 or Table 6.
The supplies for the rectifier or bypass and service bypass can be sup-
plied from either different or the same mains (optional, see Fig. 32). The
load is connected with the load connection. The given minimum conductor
cross sections apply for maximum currents.
- for Cu conductors with PVC insulation (multi wire - to 35 mm², single wire -
greater than 35 mm²)
- when laying in channels or pipes for electric installation
- with an ambient temperature of +30 °C
- for lines up to 30 m

• Observe DIN VDE 0298 part 4 if the conditions are different. When se-
lecting the conductor cross section, local conditions and standards, as well
as application-specific voltage drops due to cable lengths must be taken
into account. If predominantly nonlinear loads occur in your system, you
must multiply the given cross sections for N1 and N3 by 1.6.
Data in the table given for selectivity of the load fuses apply for activated
bypass.

Connecting the batteries

Before connecting the batteries, please read the notice and warning plate on
the UPS or battery cubicle.
Warning
Battery fuses are shipped together with the UPS and the battery cubicles for
the internal and external batteries, respectively. They must not be installed
during installation, but rather, only when commissioning (see page 55). If the
battery fuses are inserted beforehand, the built-in intermediate circuit capaci-
tors can explode and damage the UPS.
Warning
In the event of malfunction, the battery carriers could be under voltage!
You can use both MASTERGUARD Series S battery cubicles, as well as lead-
acid batteries.
Notice
The requirements of the EC directives (see EC Declaration of Conformity on
page 6) are satisfied when MASTERGUARD battery cubicles are used with
original accessories. If other batteries are used, you must ensure that the ap-
plicable EC directives are met and declare conformity. The UPS must still be
parameterised with the service software and fit with an all-pin partition device
and fuses according to Table 5. When planning your battery wiring, note the
maximum possible cross section at terminal C2/D2 as shown in Table 5. Also
note the information regarding special settings in the Appendix.
The MASTERGUARD battery cubicle is installed directly to the right of the
UPS.
Notice for different installation
With extended battery management, the distance between the UPS and
MASTERGUARD battery cubicle must not be more than 10 meters. The con-
nection line for the battery measurement module must be laid so that it is
properly grounded and so that there is no risk of bodily contact or short circuits.
The isolation is to be laid for a rated voltage of 400 V.
Notice
Extended battery management is not possible for other batteries.
Connect the batteries as follows (connection materials are in the supplied
packet):
• Check that the battery fuses are not inserted and, if other batteries are
used, that the external battery switch is open.

Recharging batteries
Notice
When recharging, observe the notice on the packaging

Exchanging batteries
Notice
Before exchanging batteries, both the batteries in the battery cubicle, as well
as the batteries to be installed must be fully charged.

Connecting the interfaces

Notice
The interface cables must be shielded and located away from the power ca-
bles (min. 20 cm). The shield must be on both sides. Control and power cables
must cross at a 90° angle.

Make the required connection to the interfaces. For interface locations and pin
assignments, see Chapter „Communication“.
The interface cables should be run in the device along the control panel holder
to its hinge in the UPS cabinet and from there down to the leadthrough for the
power cable. Approximately 2.5 m of cable are needed inside the device. The
cable shield of the interface cable must make electrical contact above the
mains connection terminals. To do this, the cable jacket must be removed
near the point of contact and fastened to the clamping bar using the shielding
clamps included with the shipment.

Disassembly, repackaging
Danger
The UPS contains capacitors which carry residual voltage for some time even
after disconnecting the device from mains and the battery. This voltage (> 500
V DC) is present at battery terminals C2 and D2 and at the mains input filter,
where the option "amplified input filter" is in use. Before disassembly, check
that the UPS and the mains separation device are switched off and the battery
fuses removed. Measure the voltage at the battery terminals and at the mains
input filter and wait until it has dropped to 0 V or wait at least 5 min. Failure to
do this can lead to severe electrical shock and possibly death.

Disassemble the UPS in the reverse order of that described in the previous
chapters. Use the original packaging if possible when repackaging.

Notice
If the UPS is to be transported, it must absolutely be done while on a pallet
since the UPS frame may not be lifted directly with a lifting truck.

MASTERGUARD Series S Operation

Operation

Commissioning
Forming If the UPS devices have not been used for a period of more than one year, the
intermediate circuit capacitors must be reformed. If the UPS devices are
commissioned within one year after delivery (name-plate), the intermediate
circuit capacitors do not need to be reformed.
Contact customer service if the intermediate circuit capacitors need to be
reformed.
Carry out commissioning as follows:
Switch on the UPS • For units connected in parallel see section „Parallel operation“.
• Check that the UPS is connected according to the section "Installation".
• Mount the protective shielding of the terminal field.
• Check that the service bypass switch of the UPS is in position 3 and the
key switch on the control panel is set to "Bypass".
• Switch on the external mains separation device for the UPS: The load is
now supplied with voltage via the service bypass.
• Switch the service bypass switch of the UPS to position 2: the green LED
LINE on the control panel illuminates, followed by the yellow LED after
approx. 10 sec. The warning indicators "8" and "13" also appear on the
display. The rectifier and electronic bypass are now supplied with voltage.
• Connect a PC to the service interface and set the correct battery data us-
ing the software provided with the shipment, provided no
MASTERGUARD Series S battery cubicle is being used.

Connect the batteries • Check that the battery charging voltage on the
UPS side of the battery isolator has the same
polarity as the battery side of the isolator.
• Insert the battery fuses and close the battery
isolator (see Fig. 58). Warning indicator 13
disappears from the display.
Fig. 58: Battery isolator
Switch to on-line • Check that the yellow LED BYPASS is illumi-
operation nated.
• Switch the service bypass switch to position 1: the inverter and the elec-
tronic bypass are enabled and the loads are now supplied via the elec-
tronic bypass.
• Switch the key switch on the control panel to the position ON-LINE: The
yellow LED BYPASS goes out and the green LED ONLINE illuminates.
• Replace the front cover of the UPS.
The UPS is now in on-line operation and the loads are supplied from the in-
verter. Message 8 disappears from the display.

6SU 5691-6AA00-0AC0 55
Operation MASTERGUARD Series S

Taking out of service

Switch to service by- • Switch the key switch on the control panel to the position BYPASS. Wait
pass until the UPS is in bypass operation: the yellow LED BYPASS illuminates
and the green LED ONLINE goes out.
• Switch the service bypass switch to position 3: the rectifier, inverter and
the bypass are blocked, the yellow LED BYPASS on the control panel
goes out and the UPS is in the service bypass operating mode .

Disconnect • Open the battery isolater or battery switch if other external batteries are
batteries used.

Danger
The UPS contains capacitors which carry residual voltage for some time after
disconnecting the device from mains and the battery. This voltage (> 500 V
DC) is present at battery terminals C2 and D2 and at the mains input filter,
where the option "amplified input filter" is in use. Before continuing work,
measure the voltage at the battery terminals and at the mains input filter and
wait until this has dropped to 0 V or wait at least 5 min. Failure to do this can
lead to severe electrical shock and possibly death.
The UPS is now in service bypass operating mode. There is still voltage at the
connection terminals only for mains and loads. Qualified personnel can now
carry out maintenance work while observing the corresponding safety meas-
ures.

Disconnect mains If the loads no longer need power, you can now open the external mains sepa-
ration device for the UPS.

MASTERGUARD Series S Warning and Fault Indicators

Warning and Fault Indicators

The UPS recognises and announces occurring events. These events are di-
vided into warning indicators and fault indicators. Whether the indicator is a
warning or fault can be determined from the two LEDs ALARM and FAULT,
the number which appears in the display, and the audible horn signals.

Warning indicators
If a warning indicator appears, the UPS continues in operation. The yellow
LED ALARM illuminates on the control panel. A number between 1 and 31
appears in the display indicating the type of warning. Warning indicators are
additionally signalled with an audible horn.
Audible horn The horn sounds with two different patterns. The horn level signals the mean-
ing of the warning.
• Horn level 1: long intervals
This event is less serious. The cause must not be rectified, unless other-
wise specified in Table 13.
• Horn level 2: short intervals
This event is serious. The cause should be rectified to avoid a fault.
The horn turns off automatically as soon as the cause of the event is rectified.
The horn can also be turned off manually by pressing the button
TEST/RESET.
The various possible warning indicators are listed in the following table.

MASTERGUARD Series S Environmental Compatibility, Disposal

Environmental Compatibility, Disposal

Environmental In contrast to earlier UPS devices, the number components has been greatly
concerns during reduced through the use of highly integrated components and modular con-
development struction. As a result, energy consumption during production is reduced.
In particular, great attention was given to reducing the volume, mass and vari-
ety of metals and plastics used.
Environmental compatibility was an important criterion in the selection of parts
obtained from vendors.
Environmental Components obtained from vendors are delivered primarily with re-usable
concerns during packaging.
