Person A

I myself am a bit of a travel addict and have visited many countries in my life and used many different
forms of transportation. The article talks about how air travel is the safest way of travel, but when it
comes down to it, I really feel a lot more safe when taking the train or going by car. The only negative
I can think of for road travel would be that petrol prices might be high and overnight parking can
sometimes be difficult to find in new cities.

Person B

Travelling by plane is just too much work in my opinion. Between arriving at the airport early, going
through check-in, security, remembering my passport and boarding pass, not to mention the length of
the journey, it’s all just extremely complicated. But whenever I do travel, my focus is always on
arriving at my destination and exchanging currency - it’s fascinating to hold foreign bills in my hand!

Person C

A few years back I decided to ship my bicycle over to another country and pick it up in a rental car so I
could drive up into the mountains and do some cycling. Everything went smoothly getting my bicycle
registered as special baggage, but when I tried to rent the car, they told me that my drivers license
wasn’t valid in that country. When I finally got to my hotel by taxi I found out that my bike had a flat
tyre so I had to cancel the whole plan.

Person D

There’s a lot of discussion on the different forms of transport available to us nowadays. However, as a
budget traveler I must say that the bus is my go-to option. Yes, it may take a bit longer but it costs me
less money and gets me to my destination without fail. My second choice would be the train, although
I find the platforms to be disorienting and I always fear that I’m going to miss it.

1. Who has had trouble traveling by car?

2. Who thinks land travel is better than air travel?
3. Who thinks that traveling by car is expensive?
4. Who doesn’t like long trips?
5. Who likes to use cheaper forms of transportation?
6. Who thinks land travel can be confusing?
7. Who wasn’t able to complete their trip successfully?

4. Read the text below. Match the headings A-H to the paragraphs 19-25. Remember that there
is an extra heading that you will not need.

A. What’s to be expected if we don’t change our ways

B. Making a difference in daily living
C. The concept of sustainable consumer behaviour
D. Sustainable diets
E. Limiting consumption for sustainability purposes
F. Who must participate in sustainable living?
G. Steps being taken in the housing industry
H. Sustainable energy and transportation

19.Sustainable consumer behaviour refers to the behaviour of consumers that has social, as well as
environmental benefits, along with meeting their needs. Concerns regarding the conservation and
sustainability of natural resources have led to the encouragement of consumers to adopt a green way of
life. Companies associated with the production of goods and services invest a lot of time, effort and
money to study consumer behaviour as a whole. This is because a product or a service impacts all the
stages of the process of consumption. It is popularly believed that sustainable development is the
answer for the survival of the future generations. The first step towards sustainability is its
incorporation into the consumption behaviour of the customers.

20. The only way to protect the only habitable planet, Earth, and secure the continuance of future
generations is to make sustainable consumption choices. Over-consumption is considered one of the
major causes of environmental degradation. Sustainable consumption is all about doing a lot more with
less. Implementing the three R’s - reduce, reuse and recycle - in everyday life is a wonderful way to
prevent the loss of more natural resources. Learning to life a minimalistic lifestyle, cutting out the
unnecessary excess from your life, is a way to help out both your bank account and the environment.

21. Other practical steps you can take towards making a difference include organising anti- littering
campaigns and encouraging people in your community to plant trees. You can also contribute towards
sustainable development by embracing new habits, such as turning off the light when leaving the
house, or taking shorter showers to save water. Using CFL or LED lightbulbs, rather than traditional
ones, also makes a difference in how much waste you produce, because they last longer and are more
energy efficient.

22. Alternative forms of energy for electricity, such as hydropower or solar energy, is another effective
way to prevent the extinction of fossil fuels like, coal, oil, and natural gas, thereby protecting the
Earth’s limited resources. Also, it will help in reducing global warming caused by too much carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere. Changes must be made in the way we view and use different methods of
transportation. Use of cars and planes, for example, have a much greater impact on greenhouse gas

production than bicycles, trains, or simply just walking. Even taking the bus, though it still contributes
to carbon dioxide production, is a better option than driving your own car.

23. Food and drink choices also directly impact the global warming crisis. A lot of people wrongly
believe that sustainable eating means avoiding meat or any and all animal products. However, that is
not the case. When trying to choose sustainable options, all you have to keep in mind is to eat lower
than the food chain. You can eat locally grown and produced fruits and vegetables in order to eliminate
the food miles. Also, remember to buy fresh so that you can avoid the processing steps that involve
water and carbon footprint. Even the most popular drinks, such as tea and coffee, are big contributors
to your carbon footprint, whilst freshly-made fruit juices, milk, and water are better alternatives.

24. Sustainable homes refer to houses that are constructed using a combination of natural resources
and recycled materials. Their aim is to reduce the adverse environmental impact both before and after
the construction of a home. This goes a long way in ensuring that the needs of the present generation
are met without compromising the future generation's ability to meet their needs. Many home
developers are also investing in brand new construction techniques that promote the recycling of the
home. These homes are being called “demountable houses.” They can be entirely taken apart and re-
assembled again. Energy-efficient homes are also amongst the top preferred properties in the real
estate market.

25. The role of humans in promoting and maintaining sustainability is crucial. Individuals can spread
awareness about global warming and the dangers of consumerism. It is humans themselves who can
protect their planet by working together to find new technologies and alternatives to limited natural
resources. This is a responsibility that’s not limited to a select few, but must be shared by humans
across the world if we want to see real change in the health of this planet both today, and for future
generations to come!
