ECONOMY
HYDROGEN ECONOMY
• Economy that relies on hydrogen as the commercial fuel that would
deliver a substantial fraction of a nation’s energy and services.
• Hydrogen:
• energy storage medium
• Energy carrier
• Not primary energy sources
HYDROGEN MARKET
• Identifying the supply chain
• Businesses that could adapt hydrogen
• Hydrogen roadmap
HYDROGEN MARKET
• Production
• Storage
• Transportation

HYDROGEN PRODUCTION
METHODS
• Thermochemical processes – steam reforming and gasification
• Electrolysis
• Water Splitting processes
THERMOCHEMICAL
PROCESSES
• Steam reforming – converts methane into hydrogen and carbon
monoxide by reaction with steam over a nickel catalyst
THERMOCHEMICAL
PROCESSES
• Gasification – uses heat to break down biomass or coal into a
gas which produces pure hydrogen
E L E C T R O LY T I C P R O C E S S E S
• Electrolysis – electric current to split water into hydrogen at the
cathode and oxygen at the anode
WATE R S P L I T T I N G P R O C E S S E S
• Photoelectrochemical water splitting – uses photovoltaics (PV) to
split water using sunlight (UV)
WATE R S P L I T T I N G P R O C E S S E S
• Biological water splitting – uses microorganisms to split water
using sunlight. Biological systems use microbes to break down a
variety of biomass feed stocks into hydrogen
HYDROGEN
• Electrolysis required high-purity water and electricity
• Producing hydrogen purity >99.9%
• Electrolyte composition consist of pure water + 30% KOH

• Liquid alkaline solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide
(electrolyte)
• Transport hydroxide ions (OH-) through the electrolyte
• From cathode to anode
• Hydrogen generated on the cathode

• Electrolyte/membrane – a solid specialty plastic material
• Water reacts at the anode to form oxygen and positively
charged hydrogen ions (proton) H+
• Electron flows through external circuits and the hydrogen ions
selectively move across the PEM to the cathode
• At the cathode, hydrogen ions combine with electrons from the
external circuit to form hydrogen gas

S O L I D O X I D E E L E C T R O LY Z E R S
• Solid ceramic material as the electrolyte
• Steam at the cathode combines with an electron from external circuits to
form hydrogen and negatively charged oxygen ions (O2-)
• Oxygen ions pass through the solid ceramic membrane and at the
anode forming oxygen gas and generating electrons for the external
circuit.
• Operates at high temperature (700 oC - 800 oC)
