IMPORTANT
Never incline Never incline the machine during the coupling phase
the machine because this could impair the correct stability and
safety conditions.
CAUTION
42
Use of the PTO It is imperative the use of the original PTO drive shaft
drive shaft supplied with the machine.
IMPORTANT
Purpose of the The purpose of the PTO drive shaft with torque limiter is:
PTO drive shaft
with torque a) To avoid the possibility that FAE machine is damaged in
limiter (only for the event that the tractor power is higher than the
the models for maximum power permitted (see "Technical
which they are Specifications").
provided) b) To avoid that the rotor, if it suddenly stops, transfers all its
power immediately to the tractor and causes damage to it.
First and second Lower both arms of the tractor's elevator until the hooks are at a
point hitch height slightly lower than the pins.
Drive backwards with the tractor until both hooks are exactly
beneath the connecting pins.
Slowly lift the arms of the first and second point until the balls
engage completely into the dedicated seats.
For the specific coupling procedures refer to the operating
instructions of the tractor.
44
If no quick couplers are available at your tractor:
- Pull the pins of the first and second point out;
- Approach the tractor until the ball swivels of the
coupler is aligned to the hitch holes;
- Insert the pins and lock them with the security
devices provided.
45
During the coupling
procedure the length of
the PTO drive shaft
must be checked.
With the PTO drive
shaft at minimum
length (machine in
nearest position to the
tractor) the tubes
overlap must be total
with a minimum
clearance of 30 mm.
With the PTO drive
shaft at working length,
the minimum tubes
overlap must be at
least 2/3 of the tube
length.
46
Third point Connect the top link by
hitch means of the
dedicated mechanic or
hydraulic tractor
drawbar (optional for
some models). The
telescopic part of the
top link must always
be mounted on the
side of the machine.
Lengthen the top link,
until the quick coupler
hook is aligned with
the ball. Lift the locking
lever and insert the
hook. Ensure that the
locking lever returns to
home position
(operating position). If
necessary, lengthen or
shorten slightly the top
link until the hook is
completely blocked.
47
In order to be able to execute the required work and to obtain the best
results, it is often necessary to adjust the inclination of the machine
during the various operation phases. For this purpose FAE
recommends the use of the hydraulic top link arm with which some
models are equipped as standard. For other models it can be
supplied optionally. Some important recommendations when using
such a device may be of assistance:
a) Figure (a) shows the optimum operating condition for a
PTO drive shaft. The power take off shafts of a):
Angular b) Figure (b) shows a working condition at which the two power
difference take off shafts are not aligned and the angles of the
universal joints are different (angular difference). The
angular difference causes an irregular motion of the PTO
drive shaft with consequent abnormal demands to the entire
kinematic chain. When working in this condition supervise
permanently the PTO drive shaft by correcting the height
and the inclination of the machine and by taking into
consideration that the larger the angle of inclination to the
universal joints, the smaller the angular difference.
48
d) Figure (d) shows a PTO drive shaft with angles of 25° to the
universal joints and an angular difference of 10°. It is not
possible to work in these conditions.
(d)
49
Depressurized In order to carry out the connection with quick
hydraulic couplers, the hydraulic system of the tractor must be
system depressurized. Refer to the operation instructions of
your tractor.
IMPORTANT
Any fall protection devices provided on the
Removal of the hydraulically operated kinematics must only be
fall protection removed after connecting and pressurizing the
devices hydraulic system and after checking its functionality.
Non-observance of these instructions can cause
serious hazards to safety.

10.3. Assembly of self-aligning systems of the power take-off
Self-aligning For some machine models on which the PTO drive shaft
systems of the transmission is particularly subject to stress, FAE has developed
power take-off two systems for the self-alignment of the power take-off. These
systems ensure a longer life time of the PTO drive shaft and base
on two different kinematics principles of the PTO drive shafts.
"Z" -shaped The "Z" –shaped adjusting system (see figure below) consists in
adjusting system obtaining the exact parallelism of the power take offs of the
tractor and the machine independently of the inclination and
ground height of the FAE machine.
Coupling of the
device Follow the steps shown below for the connection of the "Z" –
shaped adjusting system:

Incorrect An incorrect assembly of the "Z" -shaped
assembly adjusting system of the power take off can cause
a motion irregularity of the PTO drive shaft with
subsequent micro vibrations and rapid wear and
IMPORTANT tear of all moving components of the FAE
machine.
"W" -shaped The "W" –shaped adjusting system (see figure below) consists in
adjusting system maintaining the power take off of the machine at an inclination in
which the angles of inclination of the universal joints of the PTO
drive shaft are equal but opposed.
Connecting the For the connection of the "W" –shaped adjusting system follow the
device steps shown below:
Preliminary - Each kit supplied with the machine is completely assembled and
operation mounted with a security screw (11). Before carrying out the
following steps remove the security screw (10), the two protection
covers (8), one of the two guiding washers (9) and the pinion (7) so
that the two bars (1) and (2) are separated.
54
Phase A - 1) Connect stirrup (1) to the clutch bell housing of the tractor
ensuring that the middle of the slotted hole is aligned with the
power take-off axle.
- 2) (Operation to be carried out only for kits supplied as spare
parts). Connect stirrup (2) to the gearbox of the FAE machine.
The stirrup must always be on the left when looking at the
power take-off of the gearbox.
55
Phase C - 6) Measure distance "L" between the centres of the universal
joints of the PTO drive shaft.
-
Phase D - 7) Place pinion (7) exactly in the middle of the distance
between the two universal joints) (L/2).
- Assemble the guiding washers (9) and lock the corresponding
screws (10) by means of thread adhesive.
- Grease the rack steering.
- Mount the protection covers (8) as shown in the exploded
view.
56
- Before starting the machine check that the assembly was
Phase E - carried out as instructed and that the kinematics work as
Check shown in figure 1 and 2.
- Lift the machine completely and shorten the hydraulic top link
as far as possible. In this position the pinion must be in the
middle of the distance between the two universal joints and
the angles of inclination of the universal joints must be equal
and opposed.
- Carry out the same check with the machine in the same
position and the hydraulic top link completely open.
- Carry out the same checks with the machine completely
lowered and with the hydraulic top links completely closed
and completely open respectively.

Signal signs When driving on national roads, do not forget that it is mandatory to
attach a sign with indication of protruding loads (see chapter "Modes of
Operation").
Actuating Never actuate the control levers and the lever of the self-propelled
control levers unit elevator during transport.
Speed limitation Reduce the speed of the self-propelled unit. If there are holes or
depressions on the ground the return stroke could raise the FAE
machine excessively with the risk of damage to the self-propelled unit.
The speed must always be adapted to the ground conditions.

13. USE OF THE MACHINE
13.1. Adjustments of the machine and work parameters
Operating speed
Start of work When reaching the place of work, lower the machine and actuate the
rotor before the equipment touches the ground. Thereupon, run up the
machine and start to work. Take care that the FAE machine is let down
gradually.
Quality control Work for a short distance and check whether the quality of the work and
of the work the dimensions of the ejected material meet your requirement.
Applicable For all operating conditions of your FAE machine the working speed
parameters for must be adapted to the following parameters:
the speed a) The working width (the larger the working width of the
machine, the higher the required performance and the lower
the working speed);
b) The conditions of the ground and the quality of the material to
be treated;
c) The working depth (the deeper the working depth, the higher
the required performance and the lower the working speed);
d) The kind of result to be obtained (the lower the speed of
progressive motion, the better the result obtained);
e) The capacity of the self-propelled unit (under the same
conditions the following applies: the higher the capacity of the
self-propelled unit, the higher the permitted speed. The
capacity of the self-propelled unit may under no circumstances
exceed the permitted maximum capacity of the machine
indicated in the chapter "Technical Data".
Machines with If the torque limiter assembled on the PTO drive shaft
power take-off frequently 'triggers', this could mean that the speed is too
and PTO drive high for the work in progress at this moment and
shaft with therefore it must be re-adjusted by taking into account
torque limiter IMPORTANT the parameters described above.
61
Working speed We recommend taking into account the working speed
during the work process, as listed in the table

15.2. Seasonal shutdown
Lubrication of the Lubricate all components and place the equipment in a protected and dry
components area so that you will find it again in perfect condition at resumption of work.
15.3. Disposal
Maintenance The different maintenance operations are described below. Take into
work account that lower running costs and a long working life of the machine
depend, among other things, on the method and permanent observation of
these regulations.
Simple cleaning of the machine from mowing residues, field earth and other
residues after completion of the work guarantees faultless efficiency of the
machine and avoids possible causes of damages in the future.
75
Training Maintenance work must be executed with coupling
device removed (joint coupling or hydraulic
coupling); the machine must stand on the ground
and the self-propelled unit shut off and blocked.
Cleaning after Clean your FAE machine with utmost care and
completion of the lubricate it at every point at the end of every working
work day, as described below.
IMPORTANT
76
Lubrication
Lubrication Lubrication must, if possible, always be carried out at the end of every
use at every indicated point with graphitized or water-resistant
lubricating grease. If the lubrication is carried out at the end of every
use, removing of dirt and old grease is easier.

Only use FAE original spare parts. The use of non
Original spare original spare parts can impair the faultless operation
parts of the machine and leads to the nullification of the
CAUTION
warranty rights.
Vibrations If abnormal vibrations appear and all tools are in good condition, the
rotor is probably unbalanced. The balancing work may be executed
by approved workshops only.
Renewing oil Renew, if necessary, the oil level by refilling oil until the given
level measuring point is reached.
Pay attention to not spill any oil on the ground by carrying out the
refilling and therefore use suitable tools.

Standard threaded pitch bolts
Please use these torque values only in cases where it is not espressively mentioned on the specifical instructions.
The torque numbers in bold carachter are important to be respected by using a torque wrench for tightening.
85
16.5. Maintenance of the tools and their replacement
Tools of the rotor
Tools of the The machines are supplied with tools (called hammer for the series “F”)
rotor made of steel (with optional inserts of hard metal).
The rotor tools must be replaced as soon as they lose their service life.
Usually this will be evident by the fact that the wear and tear has
blunted these tools completely and therefore they have lost both their
characteristic form and their cutting force.
In any case, the tools with hard metal inserts must be replaced as soon
as the cutting-alloy tips loosen or if they break off or chip off.
The tools mode of operation guarantees that they always remain sharp
until the maximum wearing limit is reached.
Original spare Only use FAE original spare parts. The use of non
parts original spare parts can impair the faultless operation of
the machine and leads to the voiding of the warranty
CAUTION rights.
86
Replacement of the tools
Maintenance Before carrying out any maintenance work, shut off
work the power supply, ensure that the machine rests firmly
on the ground, the tractor is shut off and the ignition
keys are removed from the instrument panel.
IMPORTANT
