Articles
An article is a word (adjective) that combines with a noun to indicate the
type of reference being made by the noun. Articles are broadly classified
into two categories:
1. A (or An): It is called indefinite article, because it does not point out
any definite thing or particular person
2. The: It is called definite article, because it points out definite thing or
particular person.
Use of A
Before a word beginning with a consonant sound.
Before a word beginning with a sound of yu, though it may begin with
a vowel letter. Example, A university, A European, A useful thing.
Before a word beginning with a sound of wu, though it may begin with
a vowel letter. Example, A one-rupee note, A one legged-dog, A one-
eyed beast.
Before a word beginning with a sounded h. Example, A horse, A
house, A holiday.
Use of An
Before a word beginning with a vowel letter. For example, An Orange,
An Apple, An umbrella.
Before a word beginning with h which is not pronounced. Example,
An hour, An honest boy, An heir.
Before individual letters spoken with a vowel sound. Example, An
MLA (em el Ae), An MP (Em pi), An SP (Es Pi)
Use of The
1. When we speak of a particular thing or person, or one already
mentioned, or one well-known to us.
2. When a singular noun or an adjective of quality is meant to represent
a whole class; Example,
The lion is the kind of a beast.
The Chinese have high IQ.
The rich are not always happy.
3. Before the names of rivers, countries, oceans and important
geographical names.
4. Before the titles of books
5. Before the names of Aeroplanes and Ships and famous buildings as
such.
6. Before superlatives, the oldest, the fastest, the highest etc.
7. Before the names of important events.
8. Before the epithet attached to a personal propper name
