Lesson Baroque
1 Period

From the past two lessons, we have learned that Medieval music was an era
of Western music, including liturgical music (also known as sacred) used for the church,
and secular music, non-religious music. Medieval music includes solely vocal music, such
as Gregorian chant and choral music (music for a group of singers), solely instrumental
music, and music that uses both voices and instruments (typically with the
instruments accompanying the voices).

Renaissance music was significantly influenced by the developments which define

the early modern period: The influence of the Roman Catholic Church started to decline
as the new music genre arose. Though sacred music was still of great importance, secular
music became more prominent in the renaissance period. This era was also known as the
―golden age of a capella choral music.
Let us now try to discover the characteristics of Baroque music by listening to
music examples and comparing them to Medieval and Renaissance

Activity 2: Reading Time!

The pictures above are artworks (painting, sculpture and architecture)

which were created during the Baroque period. What is the Baroque period, its
characteristics and how does it influence the music of the era?
BAROQUE PERIOD 1600 to 1750
The Baroque isa style of architecture, music, dance, painting, sculpture and other
arts that flourished in Europe from the early 17th century until the 1740s. In the
territories of the Spanish and Portuguese empires including the Iberian Peninsula it
continued, together with new styles, until the first decade of the 1800s. It
followed Renaissance art and Mannerism and preceded the Rococo (in the past often
referred to as "late Baroque" and Neoclassical styles. It was encouraged by the Catholic
Church as a means to counter the simplicity and austerity of Protestant architecture, art
and music, though Lutheran Baroque art developed in parts of Europe as well.

Baroque music is a style of Western art music composed from approximately 1600
to 1750. This era followed the Renaissance, and was followed in turn by the Classical era.
The word “baroque” comes from the Portuguese word barroco meaning misshapen pearl,
a negative description of the ornate and heavily ornamented music of this period.
Comparing some of music history’s greatest masterpieces to a misshapen pearl might
seem strange to us today, but to the nineteenth century critics who applied the term, the
music of Bach and Handel era sounded overly ornamented and exaggerated. Having long
since shed its derogatory connotations, “baroque” is now simply a convenient catch-all for
one of the richest and most diverse periods in music history.
Baroque music forms a major portion of the “classical music” canon, being widely
studied, performed, and listened to. Composers of the Baroque era include Johann
Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico
Scarlatti, Antonio Vivaldi, Henry Purcell, Georg Philipp Telemann, Jean-Baptiste
Lully, Arcangelo Corelli, Tomaso Albinoni, François Couperin,Denis Gaultier, Claudio
Monteverdi, Heinrich Schütz, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Jan Dismas Zelenka, and Johann
Pachelbel.
The Baroque period saw the creation of tonality. During the period, composers and
performers used more elaborate musical ornamentation, made changes in musical
notation, and developed new instrumental playing techniques
Characteristics of Baroque Music:

● Melodies sound elaborate and ornamental

● Melodies are not easy to sing or remember
● Primarily contrapuntal textures with some homophony
● Dynamic contrast – alternation between loud and soft
● Music genres—operas, oratorios, suites, tocatas, concertó grosso, fugue
● Orchestra consists of strings and continuo (an accompanying part that includes a
bassline and harmonies)

And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing

Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin

Refrain
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation

And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
