Section B

He had dodged this encounter for two weeks by sheer maneuvering of arrival and departure. Now he
felt trapped. He wanted to say, “Leave these questions for menfolk to settle; keep away, you charmer from
Outer Mongolia or somewhere.” She had stuck a flower with a pin in her bobbed hair and he longed to tell
her, “Take off that flower, it’s ridiculous.” He merely remarked, “I see that you have jasmine in your hair
this morning.”
“As it’s a Friday, I have remembered my duties as a Hindu wife. I have also washed the door steps
and decorated the threshold with white flour. I went to a shop yesterday to get it. See what I have done!” She
was so importunate that he had to look cheerful and follow her out. She pointed at a floral design on the
ground and cried, “Don’t you believe now that I could have been a Hindu in my last life? I am able to bend
down and draw the design on the floor as I see a lot of others do.”
