It is
the way air moves
around things.
Anything which
moves through air
comes under
aerodynamics, an
airplane, rocket,
kite, cars, body
etc.
Aerodynamics-
Greek aero (air)
and dynamic-
study of motion of
air, mainly when
affected by a solid
object, e.g. wing
of an airplane. An
object travel
upwards,
downwards,
faster, slower etc.
all due to the
physics of flight

and aircraft
structures forces.
Aerodynamics
related to the flow
of air around a
projectile, that
influences the
speed and
direction of the
object.
Aerodynamics
involves four
principles-
weight, lift, thrust
& drag.
1. Weight- it is
the force
generated by the
gravitational force
of earth. An
object’s weight is
controlled by the
push (how strong

it is?), e.g. a shot

needs more force
than a javelin.
2. Drag- force
that tries to slow
down the Object.
Its difficult for an
object to move
due to drag. e.g.
water causes more
drag than air. So,
it is difficult to
walk through
water as compare
to air.
3. Thrust-
opposite force of
drag. Force that
pushes the object
forward.
4. Lift- the force

that pushes the
object to move
upward, opposite

force of weight. It
involves mainly
three theories-
Bernoulli’s
principle, Coanda
effect & third law
of motion.
Aerodynamics in
sport- the pressure
interaction
between the
mechanic system
(player, with his
equipment) &
surrounding air. In
sports of speed
(cycling and
skating) it plays
an important role.
Other examples
are- running or
walking on track,
playing
football/basketbal

l/cricket,
performing
acrobatics in
gymnastics,
cycling on
velodrome,
throwing
javelin/discus
/shot/hammer etc.
Why?
To avoid the
effect of air-
resistance and get
better result or
better
performance.
Water Dynamics
(Hydrodynamics
)- The study of
liquid flow.
Fluid
dynamics-
applied science

concerned with
the flow or
movement of
liquids and gases.
The movement
may be laminar
(smoother) or
turbulent
(chaotic). Some of
the sports where
an athlete or
equipment is
affected by the
dual fluid medium
(water & air
simultaneously)-
water skiing,
swimming,
diving, rowing,
sailing,
powerboats etc.
1.Bernoulli’s
Principle- Fluid
moving at a
higher speed has

lower pressure
than fluid moving
at a lower speed.
This is applicable
to air, water, gas,
oil etc. It is named
after Daniel
Bernoulli (book
Hydrodynamica,
1738). An
increase in speed
of a fluid occurs
simultaneously
with a decrease in
static pressure or
decrease in fluid’s
potential energy.
2. Coanda
Effect- The
tendency of a
fluid jet to stay
attached to a
convex surface
and entrain fluid
from the

surroundings to
develop lower
pressure. The
action or
movement in fluid
mechanics
whereby a flow
along a solid
surface tends to
follow the
curvature of
surface rather
than separating.
3. Buoyancy
Force- The
upward force (up
thrust) exerted on
an object partly or
wholly immersed
in a fluid. Due to
this force body
submerged
partially/fully in a
fluid appears to
lose its weight or

feels lighter
(swimming).
