General Instructions:
(1) There are 33 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E.
(3) All the sections are compulsory.
(4) Section A contains sixteen questions, twelve MCQ and four Assertion Reasoning based of 1 mark each, Section B
contains five questions of two marks each, Section C contains seven questions of three marks each, Section D contains
two case study-based questions of four marks each and Section E contains three long answer questions of five marks
each.
(5) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question in Section B, one question in
Section C and all three questions in Section E. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
(6) Use of calculators is not allowed. Log and trigonometric tables can, however, be used.

Derive the expression of magnetic energy required to build up the current I in a coil of self inductance

19. A coil Q is connected to low voltage bulb B and placed near another coil P as shown in the figure. Give
reasons to explain the following observations :

27. Name the component of EM waves used in

28. A convex lens, made of glass of refractive index 1.5, of focal length 20 cm in air, is immersed in carbon
di-sulphide of refractive index 1.65. Find the new focal length of the lens. (3)
OR
A sunshine recorder globe of diameter 30 cm is made of glass of μ=1.5. A ray enters the globe parallel
to the axis. Find the position from the centre of the sphere where the ray crosses the axis. (3)

Electrostatic Potential and Electrostatic Potential Energy
Electrostatic Potential The electrostatic potential at any point in an electric field is equal to the
amount of work done per unit positive test charge or in bringing the unit positive test charge from
infinite to that point, against the electrostatic force without acceleration. V = W/q.
Electrostatic Potential Energy The work done against electrostatic force gets stored as potential
energy. This is called electrostatic potential energy. ∆U = UB-UA =WAB
Equipotential Surface A surface which have same electrostatic potential at every point on it, is known
as equipotential surface.

(a) A square shaped plane coil of area 100 cm2 of 200 turns carries a steady current of 5A. It is placed in
a uniform magnetic field of 0.2 T acting perpendicular to the plane of the coil. Calculate the torque
on the coil when its plane makes an angle of 60° with the direction of the field. In which orientation
will the coil be in stable equilibrium? (2+3=5)
OR
(a) Using Ampere’s circuital law, obtain an expression for the magnetic field along the axis of a current
carrying solenoid of length l and having N number of turns.
(b) The figure shows a rectangular current carrying loop, carrying current in the anticlockwise
direction, placed 2 cm away from a long, straight, current carrying conductor. What is the direction
and magnitude of the net force acting on the loop? (2+3=5)

32. (a) Derive an expression for instantaneous current in an inductor only circuit. Obtain an expression for
inductive reactance.
(b) Plot graphs showing the phase relationship between peak values of voltage and current and the
wave diagram between instantaneous values of voltage and current. (3+2 =5)
OR
Draw a phasor diagram for a LCR series circuit. Using this, derive an expression for resultant peak
voltage, impedance and phase angle for the circuit. What do you mean by impedance of LCR circuit?

33. (a)Derive an expression showing the relationship between object distance, image distance and radius
of curvature when a point object is kept in front of a concave refracting surface of refractive index μ2,
light passing from denser to rarer medium, after drawing a neat ray diagram.
(b)Explain giving reason, how the focal length of a convex lens changes, if red light is replaced by
monochromatic light. (3+2 =5)
OR
Draw a ray diagram for a compound microscope when the image is formed at least distance of distinct
vision. Derive an expression for the magnifying power in this case.
Can we obtain a telescope, if we reverse the lenses of a microscope? Justify. (1.5+2.5+1=5)
