REPORTED SPEECH

Reported speech is when we tell someone what another person said. To do this, we can
use direct speech or indirect speech

● Quotation marks are not used in reported speech.
● We do not use the interrogative form of the verb - do, does
or did.
● When we report requests, orders, advice or warnings we
use verbs such as advice, ask, beg, tell, order, etc,
followed by an infinitive.

GERUNDS AND INFINITIVES
Rule 1: Gerunds can be used as a subject of a sentence.
Walking is good for your health.
Rule 2: Infinitives should be used after adjectives.
It is wonderful to have close friends.

Rule 3: Gerunds are used after prepositions.


I forgive you for not telling the truth.

Rule 4: Infinitives are used after certain verbs followed by nouns or pronouns
referring to a person.
I never expected him to become famous.

Rule 5: Both gerunds and infinitives can be used as objects of a sentence.


“I enjoy drawing.” → “Yesterday, I decided to draw.”
