made into a wig. A hairdresser made it for me.”

Soon, Mang Poldo began to laugh. He shouted with joy. He handed the telegram
to Aling Loleng. She read it: LEOPOLDO CRUZ - won ten thousand pesos - Contest.

Most plants have bright-colored flowers. They open during the day. There are

camia.
Dama de noche means “lady of the night.” Its little star-like flowers open at
night. They give out a sweet odor that can be smelled from a distance. By its fragrance,
you can tell that there is a dama de noche plant nearby. In the morning, the flowers
lose their fragrance.

THE LIGHTNING
Lydia saw a flash of bright light. Clap! Br-r-r-m-m! the sound of thunder rolled
on. Lydia covered her ears with her hands and ran to her mother.
“What’s wrong, Lydia?” asked Mother. “You’re safe in the house. The lightning
won’t hurt you here.”
“Mother, why won’t the lightning hurt me?”
“First of all, you are in the house,” explained Mother. “More often lightning
strikes people in an open space. It finds the highest place to strike. Farmers walking
alone in the field or riding a carabaos are often struck by lightning. If a farmer is caught
in a thunderstorm, he should lie down on the ground and wait until it is over. He should
stay away from his carabao and avoid staying under a tree.”
