Music of the classical period (1760-1820)

 The Classical era, also called "Age of Reason" is the period from 1750-1820.
 The cultural life was dominated by the aristocracy, as patrons of musiciance and artists
generallly influenced the arts.
 In the middle of the 18th century, Europe began to move towarda new style in architecture,
literature, and the arts, known as classicism.
 Important historical events that occured in the west during this era were French Revolution
and tbe Napoleonic Wars, the American Declaration of Independence in 1776, and the
American Revolution.
 The term classical denotes conformity with principles
 Characteristics of ancient Greek and Roman literature and art which were formal, elegant,
simple, freed, and dignified.
 A style of broken chord accompanient called Alberti Bass was practiced.

FRANZ JOSEPH HADYN


(1732-1809)
 Franz joseph hadyn was describe Rags to Riches
 Franz joseph hired by rich patrons and eventually he became musical director for the
Esterhazy family for 30 yrs.
 His music reflects his character and personality:
 Mainly calm

 Serious but with touch of humor
 He made over 100 syphonies
 "Father of the Symphony" (popularly known)
 "Suprise symphony"
 "The clock"

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart


(1756-1791)
 Wolfgang amadeus mozart is a child prodigy
 Most amazing genius in musical history at age 5, he was already playing the violin
harpsichord
 6yrs old - pianist
 7yrs old - composing excellent music
 13yrs old - written sonatos, concertos, symphonies, religous works and operattos.
 Composed over 700 works
 Due to mismanaged finances he lived gis life in poverty died young and was buried in an
unknown grave.

Ludwig Beethoven

(1770-1827

 Ludwig Beethoven was born in Germany


 Composer who bridged the late Classsical era and the Early Romantic Era
 Talented pianist and composer
 Famous compositions inlude 32 piano sonatos 21 set of vanations, 9 symphonies, 5
concertos for piano, 16 string quarlets and choral music
 "Missa Solemnis" (1818 - 1823) and opera "Fidelio" (1805)
 Known symphony: no.3 "Eroica"
 no.5 no.6"Pastoral"
 Deaf 1796
 Continued composing with the help of an assistant and hearing gadget.
