A: The vehicle chosen is 2023 Tata Nexon Diesel and Tata Nexon EV. Both the cars are
made in the same ALFA platform and hence they are chosen. Both the cars same a lot of
common features apart from the drivetrain.

Q. Discuss in detail about the transmission system features of each vehicle.
A: The Nexon Diesel has a 1.5L Turbocharged L4 Revotorq Engine. The engine
produces a max. power of 110ps @3750 RPM and 260Nm torque @1500-2750RPM with
a compression ratio of 16:1.
The transmission used is a 6-speed manual. The ratios of each gear is given below:
1st: 3.308
2nd: 1.913
3rd: 1.218
4th: 0.895
5th: 0.69
6th: 0.578
Reverse: 3.545
Final Drive : 4.33
The first 3 gears multiply torque which is required to propel the vehicle from standstill.
For example, in first gear: the engine rotates about 3.308 times for each rotation of
propellor shaft. Further the final drive does torque multiplication: for 3.308x4.33
rotations the wheel rotation once in 1st gear. Similarly, 4th, 5th, 6th gears are overdrive
gears. They are useful in achieving higher speeds. It is evident that the reverse gear will
have the highest torque output.
The Nexon EV on the other hand has only a single-speed Automatic transmission. The
Transmission is provided to increase the torque output of the motor and is similar to the
final drive. This is done as the motor is a high-speed PMS motor. As speed is inversely
proportional to the torque, a high speed motor will have less torque which requires a
transmission. The Nexon ev has 2 Permanent magnet synchronous type and produces 127
bhp & 215 Nm torque while have a range of just 325 km.

The few suggestions to improve the above features in Nexon Diesel are given below:
Nexon has a thick A-pillar which gives it the structural strength for its 5star safety.
But the thick pillar also obstructs vision. This can be avoided by pulling the seat
closer to the steering wheel for better visibility and/or by reducing the thickness of
the pillar by using less thick pillars made of stronger materials.
The Diesel engine noise comes to the cabin. This can be Reduced by using better
materials in the cabin which absorb noise or by balancing the engine secondary
forces to reduce vibrations. Higher injection Pressures also result in better
combustion characteristics but increases engine vibration. This issue can be solved
by retarding the injecting timing carefully
Repairing of the AC cooling coil requires to strip off the engine dashboard. The
coil should be carefully placed somewhere where it is easy to reach during
maintenance.
The few suggestions to improve the above features in Nexon EV are given below:
The Nexon EV has a Highway range of about 233Kms only. It’s tricky to solve
this range issue as a lot of it depends upon the infrastructure. The range can be
extended by further lightweighting the car and by using light weight materials
which offers high structural strength.
The range can be optimized using improved control strategies and this can be
updated to each car Over the air.
High capacity li-ion batteries that defines the international market can make
Nexon EV a trailblazer in the Desi market.
Re-designing the front non-functional bonnet area may increase room for
passenger compartment and offer better visibility.
