    Make a lava lamp

    BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
    The lava lamp experiment is an excellent choice because it is both exciting and
    educational. It is entertaining and fun to watch the vibrant wax blobs move in the liquid.
    Additionally, it explains interesting scientific concepts like buoyancy and density.You
    can see the chemical changes as the carbon dioxide bubbles rises toward the surface,
    little globs of colored water stick to the bubbles creating the lava lamp effect.

    MATERIALS:
    ● Flask
    ● Water
    ● Alka-seltzer
    ● Vegetable oil
    ● Food coloring

    PROCEDURES:

    ● Fill most of the flask with vegetable oil


    ● Fill the rest of the flask with water. The oil floats and the water
    sinks to the bottom of the flask and looks like little clear blobs
    ● Add some drops of food colors (your choice of color) The food
    coloring is water based so it will also sink like the water at the
    bottom of the flask
    ● Brake the alka seltzer tablet into a few pisces and place on flask
    on at a time
    ● Then you watch the magic happen

    EXPLANATION:
    Due to its greater density than both oil and water, the Alka-Seltzer tablet
    sinks to the bottom when dropped into a mixture of two the tablet starts to
    dissolve in the water layer.Where the chemical reactions of the tablets
    contents result in carbon dioxide gas bubbles.
