Lab 3: Raspberry Pi 400 Set Up Individual Lab
Individual Lab
In this lab, each student will use their raspberry Pi400 kit, it will be helpful in any
future programming courses and is required for the Computer and Networking II.
2. Precautions:
Electro-static discharge (ESD) safety should be practiced, ground yourself before
handling the RPi and avoid touching edge connectors and pins.
The SD card and USB connections through copper “fingers” wear down over
repeated use. They are good for 1500 (Standard USB) to 10,000 (newer Micro-USB)
uses, still, try not to over use.
3. Installation
1. Follow directions from page 32-35 of the Beginner’s Guide, connect the Pi400 as
described to one of the bench monitors and connect to the network with the bench
ethernet cable.
4. You can change the password if you like but you are responsible for remembering it.
5. Page 40-53 will allow you to Explore your Raspberry Pi operating system, along with
just plain looking around your desktop. Follow along in the description and make
sure to visit these areas:
a. From the Pull Down the menu (Pi symbol in the upper left corner), look at the
content of each menu item
b. You will be working with a few things specifically:
i. Chromium Web Browser – Connect to the DC Connect page it will be
handy in later labs to download code
ii. File Manager
iii. LibreOffice Suite (You can open edit and save MSOffice files formats
using this product)
iv. A programming tool like Thorny Python IDE
v. Under the Help tab, checkout the bookshelf and the first tab, the MagPi
is a collection of free magazines dedicated to the raspberry pi and
projects. Also check out the books and projects tabs
6. When you want to turn your Pi400 off, follow the procedure on page 52
7. When at home you can connect your Pi400 to a TV or monitor and connect to your
WiFi.
Note: TPRG2131 (Electronics Programs) and PROG1331 (Biomedical Programs) will also be
using your Pi400, as will COMP6131 next semester .
Demonstrate to your lab instructor that you have your own kit and that it is up and running.
