Abstract
Ketoconazole is a synthetic anti fungal drug used to prevent and treat fungal
infections especially in immunocompromised patients. In today’s stressful world,
dandruff has become an increasingly common ailment. This anti dandruff shampoo is
designed for people who have a more serious case of dandruff where symptoms include,
but are not limited to constant non stop flaking and severe itchiness. Ketoconazole acts as
an antifungal agent principally by inhibiting the enzyme cytochrome P450 14 alpha
demethylase (p450 14DM).It also interferes with the fungal synthesis of ergo sterol, a
constituent of fungal cell membranes, as well as certain enzymes. The anti dandruff
shampoo was formulated by using ketoconazole (2%w/v) , xanthine gum (1.1%w/v) ,
sodium lauryl sulphate (15%w/v) , glycerin (5%w/v) , disodium EDTA (0.02%w/v).
Then the optimized formulation were evaluated for visual appearance (clear, liquid gel) ,
viscosity (85.7mpa at 1.4 rpm) , foam and foam stability (1.4cm, 0.6cm after 5 minutes) ,
cleaning action (74.6%) , wetting time (35 minutes) and eye irritancy test (no eye
irritancy was found in rabbit eye). Thus this xanthine gum based shampoo showed
effective anti-dandruff activity.
