Landforms (Relief) in Slovakia
The relief of SR is the result of: 1. internal (orogenetic) processes - folding, elevations and faults,
volcanic activity (see geological development)
I. Types of relief according to height differences (5x): roviny - ? cover 11%, pahorkatiny-
39%, vrchoviny- 26%, hornatiny - 22%, veľhornatiny - 2% of the area.
- in the river valleys , river terraces, floodplains & meanders(180°obluky)were created, (the Danube
at BA (Devínska brána) created 4 terraces and floodplains. When rivers cut through mountains they
created alluvial cone (deposits of gravels, sands) - the largest is Žitný ostrov+ it is the largest river
island in Europe/ also inland delta....?
-- -in resistant rocks (granite, limestone, quartz, ...) the rivers cut through creating gorges and
canyons (Zádielsky canyon, Manínska gorge/tiesňava/Súľovské vrchy). The rivers model the V-shaped
valley.
-in less resistant rocks (slates, clays, ...) the river forms erosive basins - Súčanská basin in the White
Carpathians.
- Karst(krasový) landforms/relief - the water in the limestone forms 1.the surface forms of the karst-
karst pits/sinkholes (jamy/závrty), grikes (škrapy) and 2. underground form - abysses (Devil's hole,
186 m, Brázda, 181 m) and caves - Domica, Demänovská jaskyňa, Dobšinská ľadová j. , Ochtinská
aragonitová j., Driny, ... The most beautiful karst relief is (from the Mesozoic) in the Slov. kras, Slov.
raj and the Muránska planina.
In the Quarternary the continental glacier in Northern Europe almost extended to the Carpathians,
but in the Carpathians-theTatras, N. Tatry, Mala Fatra (over 1700m) there were alpine glaciers. They
created glacial holes/corries (kary), pyramydal peaks, e.g.Gerlach. štít, large glacial U-shaped valleys
(trógy) - Veľká a Malá studená Valleys, glacial lakes (tarns) - Popradské, Zelené, Veľké Hincovo
pleso, ...moraines.
In the Quarternary the vegetation was sparse, so rock decay got faster turning rocks to sand and
dust, which were deposited in the lowlands. Sand dunes are located in the Záhorská lowland, partly
in the Podunajská and Východoslovenská lowlands. From the dust, loess (nespevnená sediment.
hornina) was created in the Podunajská and Východoslovenská lowlands, partly in the Košice and
Juhoslovenská hollow basins.
-quarries (when extracting, e.g. limestone or sandstone), agricultural terraces, roads and motorways,
dams and reservoirs, levees (regulated river banks, hrádze).
