Detailed Lesson Plan in Teaching Science: Earth and Space

For Grade 8

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, 85% of the students must have:
A. Identify the other members of the solar system;
B. Compare and contrast comets, meteors and asteroids; and
C. Explain the regular occurrence of meteor shower.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Other Members of the Solar System
B. References: Science 8 LM, pp 88-91
http://AstronomyInEverydayLife_MRosenberg.pdf
C. Strategies: Inquiry based approach, constructivist approach/Constructivism,
discussion method, activity method and Jigsaw technique
D. Instructional Materials:
 Power point Presentation
 Video lesson
 Laptop
 Other learning materials (eg. Answer sheets)

III. Procedure:
Procedure Teacher’s Activity Student’s Response
A. Preliminaries:
1. Greetings Good Morning Class! - Good Morning
2. Prayer Ma’am Cherry!
3. Checking of attendance May I request Ms. Hannah to lead the
prayer…

Good Morning Once again! Who are -

absent or late in the class today? - None Ma’am

Very Good!

B. Review Anybody here who can give a recap
A short review of the from our last discussion?
previous topic Yes Ms. Lyca?

- Last meeting,
we discussed
about the Solar
System. Solar
system includes
Planets namely;
Mercury,
Venus, earth,
mars, Jupiter,
Saturn, Uranus,

remember our topic yesterday.
(Constructivist Approach was applied)

C. Motivation - I have here a pictures and - The students

D. Presentation Our topic for today is about the other

The teacher presents the members of the Solar System
topic to the class as well as
the learning objectives
E. Lesson Proper Other than the moon, sun, planets and - The other
stars, what other objects are found in members of the
the solar system? solar system
What are those? include; comets,
Can you Identify the other members of meteors and
the solar system? asteroids.
Excellent!

What is the difference between a (the students are

comet, meteor and asteroids? thinking about the
Any idea? difference of comets,
meteors and asteroids)
To answer that, let’s proceed to our
discussion.

Deepen the discussion Let’s start with Comets.

Comets are considered to be a large
dirty snow ball which composed of
dust and rocks mixed with frozen
water, methane and ammonia. Comets
travelled around the sun in elliptical
orbit.
When a comet nears the sun, some of
it melts and form a long tail because
the gases in the comet are vaporized
by the sun and when a comet moves
farther away from the sun, the tail
disappears.
After a comet has passed close to the
sun many times, it breaks apart and the
small pieces from the comet spread
out. These pieces of dust and rock
along with those coming from other
sources are called METEOROIDS.

What is the difference between

Meteoroid, meteor and meteorite?

Meteoroid- is a space rock that is still

in space
Meteor- a meteoroid that burns up in
the earth’s atmosphere (Shooting star)
Meteorite- is a meteoroid that hits the
earth’s surface
Meteor showers occur when asteroids
and comet particles enter the Earth’s
atmosphere in a speedy movement.

Asteroids- A piece of rock similar to

the material formed into planets.
• Asteroid are the parent bodies
of meteoroids
Most asteroids are located in an area
between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter
called the Asteroid Belt.

So Now! In order for you to

understand more about our topic for
today, let’s have an activity and we
will be using the Jigsaw Puzzle
Technique.
- Ma’am?
- Yes? Imee? - What is Jigsaw
Puzzle
Technique?
- When We say Jigsaw Puzzle
The teacher shows a video Technique, it is a cooperative

expert on a certain topic,
through brain storming,
communicating and discussing
with others with the same
F. Generalization topics.
(the teacher divide the class into 6
groups and give the instructions to the
students’)

(after the given time, the experts

returned to their home group and
discussed and share what they have
research and learned)

Thank you so much for your active

participation. Please go back to your
chairs. Now, I will show you a video
of how comets, meteors and asteroids
differ from each other.
So what did you observe in the video? -Comets, meteors and
asteroids are the other
members of the solar
system and they differ
from each other.

How they differ from each other? - Comets are considered

to be a large dirty snow
ball which composed of
dust and rocks mixed
with frozen water,
methane and ammonia.
Comets travelled
around the sun in
elliptical orbit. While
Meteor is a meteoroid
that burns up in the
earth’s atmosphere

Asteroids is a piece of
rock similar to the
material formed into
planets.

IV. Summary Now let’s summarize everything we

discuss.

of your learning about the other
members of the solar system.
