ASSESSMENT/ENRICHMENT

1. What is the difference between language acquisition and language learning?

When we say language acquisition it is the term that is naturally used to pertain to the
process of pick up a language without a course or school. There is no need to study it in
order for you to understand, explain it further, in language acquisition your not really
dissecting or analyzing the language in order to understand it. You’ll know if something
is correct or not, just from hearing or seeing the sentence. It’ll just sound wrong, and
you’ll immediately change it to what it’s supposed to be. But you wouldn’t be able to
explain why. The best example of it is our mother tongue in which we didn’t study how
to speak and how to construct the grammar, you're just getting used to it.

While the learning language from its word learning it refers to the language that you
learn at school, it would entail analyzing the language, cutting it up into pieces, and
trying to figure it out. What are the grammar rules that make the words act like that?
And so on. Also it would entail a lot of memorization of information. You’ll gain
knowledge about grammar, pronunciation rules and so on. The best example of it is
learning foreign language in which you need to study how to pronounce the words, how
to construct the grammar, how does it spell and what it means. In short explanation the
difference of language acquisition and learning language is that the language
acquisition refers to our mother tongue while the learning language refers to our second
language or foreign language.

2. What is the difference between first language and second language?

Ever since we are still a child we already expose to language up until we grow up and
encounter and hear different language. It is because language is the most significant
aspect which makes us different from all other species. But there is a differentation
between the language that we know since birth and for the language that we learned as
we grow up and study how to speak and master it. We have this what we called, first
language and second language where in the difference between them is that first
language is, a language that one acquires from birth, it is also called as a native
language or popularly known as our mother tongue. It becomes different from second
language in a sense that first language is a language that babies acquire from birth until
about 7 or 8 years old. They can keep learning the language even after those years to
master all the idiomatic expressions, sentence structures, and many more areas. Kids
learn the language naturally and effortlessly by listening to their parents communicating
with it to them, or even listen to other kids conversing with it. While the second
language, it is a language usually learned at a later stage. It can be any language as
long as it is not a mother tongue or native tongue. The process of learning this is active
and demands lots of efforts to familiarize yourself with grammar rules, sentence
structure, pronunciation, vocabulary and many more concepts, most of the times you
need to enroll yourself to a school or have a tutor in learning this. If first language was
acquired naturally and seems like a hereditary, the second language on the other hand,
is often learned in the classrooms, online tutorials, listening to others speak in a
different linguistic environment or foreign country. This are the some difference between
the first language and the second language.

3. What happens after a language comes into contact with another?

I always believe that when people are exposed with a different culture it would result to
a contact of two languages and it one of them either would be the reserved or
replacement of by the other one. This is most common when one language has a higher
social position (prestige). Most of the times when two language comes into contact with
each other, they would be probably used together as one, when that person talk they
would not use one language but instead used the two language as they talk. This is
because language change is the natural process through which human languages
change over time. Because language is a dynamic, organic thing that reflects the
needs, habits, fashions of the communities where they are spoken. Also if two language
comes into contact with each other it would give changes to their pronunciation and
grammar which also changes but more slowly.

So as we make interactions from others and from society the more we learned and
later on used it together and I think this is mostly what happens if two language comes
in contact with each other people tend to used it as one as they communicate without
knowing it, may be intentionally or unintentionally. It somehow affects their
pronunciation and grammar as well as their accent. As I observe, the reason why
there’s a contact with two language because people happens to be interested in other
cultures and if you are interested in others culture it would be impossible not being
interested in their language. After all Language is a way to experience a culture. But I
hope we shouldn’t forget our own language for this is our identity . It is one of the most
tangible symbols of cultural and group identity. It is the living expression of intellect, of
specific cultural understanding, a link to the past and to the future, a tool for naming and
knowing the land and all the history and companionship it holds, and a key to future
survival.

1. I speak 4 languages namely, Hiligaynon, tagalog, English and Spanish. But I only
speak Spanish a little.
2. Hiligaynon and tagalog
3. I acquired it because this is the language being used when people around talk to
me and mostly this is the language that I heard people using when they are
communicating with each other.
4. The skills that I can perform using my first languages is that I can speak using it
as well as read, write and of course compose some literary works such as, poem
or even songs.
5. My second languages are english and Spanish.
6. I’ve learned it through watching dramas in TV, by studying it and of corse by
being interested in knowing it because you won’t be able to study it if your not
really into ot or interested about it. I really put so much effort in knowing how to
be literate in speaking it. I studied their pronunciation, grammar and even the
construction of words.
7. The skills that I can perform uing my second language would be reading,
speaking, socializing with other people or foreigner, I can also make literary
works such as, poem and songs.
8. I am the kind of person that I like to read so much that is why it enhances my
language capacity. One of my language strength from both my first and second
languages are, I have a great pronunciation when it comes on pronouncing both
my first and second language as well as when it comes on written and reading
activity. Also I am good in constructing words I am very meticulous when it
comes on correct grammar. I can also say that one of my language strength is
that I have a great vocabulary because I engage myself in both reading and
listening.
9. I can say that one of my language weakness is that I am not good in using my
languages creatively especially in writing stories, you know, a little information
about me is that I am really a frustrated writer, I am a writer wanna be but
everytime I write my plot is just that my language or my words are boring and
dull. Also one of my language weakness is I don’t have confidence in speaking it
especially if there’s a lot of people.
10. Well for me my favorite language is english, this is my second language ,I feel
like every time I use english as means of communication even in writing it
somehow boost my confidence. Also I like it because I can communicate with a
lot of people even foreigners, it helps you get rid of the language barrier. English
enables you to communicate easily with all the fellow global citizens of the world,
you can actively get access to many things. And I think learning and being able
to speak and understand English offers a lot of benefits like international
employment which is really my dream.

2. After filling the table above, write a paragraph that tells your story of your languages.

I was born and raise here in the Philippines, specifically in Mindanao, South Cotabato
and from the moment I first open my eyes I think the language that I heard up until I
grow up is hiligaynon and basically it becomes my mother tongue. My parents are both
from illonggo tribe that is why I am a certified ilongga. I have two first languages
namely hiligaynon and tagalog I can say that these are my first languages because I’ve
leaned to speak and know it naturally I didn’t study it or give effort to know and
understand it. Hiligaynon becomes my first language because as what I’ve said before,
all the people that surrounds me used hiligaynon as a means of communication. As for
tagalog, ever since I was still a child I like to watch dramas, Filipino dramas, that is why
I was able to understand it and know how to speak it without studying its grammar or
something because I kind of heard it every time I watch and listen to dramas. Korean
drama, Thai drama and etc was not that popular during my childhood days that is why I
was exposed to Filipino drama and teleserye and later on learn how to speak and
understand it.

But as I grow up, technology becomes advance as well as our generation and I was
kind of hooked to English language because I have this dream of mine to work abroad
and it motivated me to learn how to speak and understand english. Also I noticed that
when you talk using the English language it feels like, it somehow boost your
confidence. I am not saying that im good with it but I feel like im there mastering it. Also
I find the need to learn how to speak and understand english it because it’s our
universal language and I am here in the Philippines where in it was given important to
know it to the point that they made it a subject l. Which is really a must after all at the
end of the day Philippines is a free country in which everyone can visit. That is why it
motivated me to learn and understand English .
INTROSPECTING

Language is one of the most important parts of any culture. It is our identification, it is
the way by which people communicate with one another, build relationships, and create
a sense of community. Language allows us to express our ideas, thoughts, and feelings
with others. It has the power to build societies, but also tear them down. Language
becomes so important in all aspect of fields, it may be in the field of education,
business, communication, traditions, culture and etc. And I think this reasons are
enough for us to appreciate language. Also in this lesson I was able to understand that
language brings people as one that it destroy international barriers and even differential
barrier. Language becomes our means of connection, to convey and diffuse our
experiences as close as we can get to sharing and describing without the other person
actually being there. We give language the power of translating our experiences into
words.

Without language we won’t be able to share experiences with one another, to build
connections, to allow empathy, to translate our experiences, we use the power of
language. It’s all we have to be the closest to sharing our intimacy, and exposure to our
experiences with one another. After all building relationship is what every persons what
in this world and we cant imagine how would we build it without the used of language.
Because evene personally, I can’t imagine communicating and building relationship to
others if not because of languages because I know that actions is not enough. That is
why I always believe in the saying ' the limit of my language, means the limit of my
world.
Lesson 2
PRE-DISCUSSION

In a paragraph, describe the relationship between language and communication.

The relationship between language and communication is that, Language is a form of

communication that allows us to express and convey our feelings, thoughts, and
emotions to other people. Furthermore, language is based on verbal and non-verbal
codes. In other words, language is regarded as the most important means of
communication. Communication would not be effective and convenient because as
what I said before action is not enough in engaging in a conversation, language should
be present. Because how would you be able to express your thoughts, ideas, feelings
and even agreement and complaints if language is absent. We should remember that
Communication is the spoken or nonverbal exchange of ideas, thoughts, and
information between people.

To put it in simple explanation language is regarded as the most important

communication instrument. It is a blood circulation of communication, because
communication is impossible without language. After all Language is an important
means of conveying and exchanging feelings. It was created to provide the ability to
communicate. So that means, they need each other, they improve each other and they
create interaction. In short , communication happens through the languages.without
language one cannot convey anything to anyone.

Assessment/ enrichment
1. How do you differentiate the types of communication in relation to communication
mode?
The difference between nonverbal/ verbal type of communication and visual
communication in relation to communication mode is that, Non-verbal
communication is the act of sharing information without the use of words. It uses
nonverbal expressions like facial expressions, eye contact, body language,
proximity, time, and posture. That is why it would be effective and a lot easier to
understand if it is accompanied by verbal communication. Both of them are ways
we interact with other people. With both, we express ourselves and with both, we
leave impression on others, good or bad. Both of these type of communication
say a lot about us. If they are both separated it would be confusing because
actions has different meanings not everyone in the world understands one
gesture in the same way. That is why it would be convenient and easier to blend
this two types of communication. As for the visual communication from the word
itself, ' visual’ means it uses drawings or an illustration to convey message.
Visual communication is easy to understand. It doesn’t require much skills or
knowledge, making it possible to be used by almost anyone for communication. It
also makes the recipients retain the information received for a longer time.

2. How can visual communication enhance the message conveyed by a speaker?

Cite a situation when it is best to employ visual communication.

It enhances the message being conveyed by speaker in a sense that visual

Communication helps to convey information in a better and more convenient way. Some
of the main benefits of visual Communication include generation enjoyment, cross-
cultural Communication, instance conveyance, and ease of understanding. It delivers
information more directly. Also based on what I have read the use of visual
communication makes an impact on the audience. It helps speaker Expresses their
point of view about the information presented.

The situation that visual communication is best to employ is during the Displays for
Important Information. Because something people don’t understand what Is being
instructed or the content of the information but with the help of visual communication
they would be able to understand the message being conveyed to them. Also the best
situation where visual communication is best to emply is during meetings or conference
because visual communication would be a big help to let your audience know what is
really you are presenting. Lastly is when promoting or advertising your product or
business. It would be really effective if your advertisement use visual communication
because it makes your product or business recognizable so that people pay attention. It
Make your business look good and increase your presence on social media,
respectively. If your marketing strategy is balanced with attractive visuals, chances are
high that people will stop by and look at your content.

3. What are the types of communication in relation to context? How do they differ
from one another?
1.The distinction between the four types of communication in relation to context is that
interpersonal communication is two-way which means it is accompanied by an
interactive exchange. However, a transaction does not always occur because it might
be as basic as pleasantries or getting to know someone. While the intrapersonal type of
communication means inside or within. Talking to oneself, also known as self or inner
speak, inner monologue, inner dialogue, self-verbalization, or self-statement, is an
example of intrapersonal communication. A person may talk to oneself if he or she
believes it is necessary to: increase confidence when speaking in front of an audience,
remind oneself that one did a good job, or console oneself that one did a poor job.
Furthermore, if one can distinguish inner speech from reality, such as imagining, it is not
harmful.

As for the extended type of communication it is done with the use of electronic media.
Not only television and radio, but also tele, audio, or phone conferencing, video
conferencing, Skype calls, and other modern means are included. Because extended
communication is done in front of an audience, speakers are expected to be prepared
and use more formal language. Messages are transmitted swiIt is communication
between or among persons who come from various language, religious, ethnic, social,
and professional backgrounds. Communication is influenced by gender differences as
well. Individuals of all orientations communicate and perceive messages in a variety of
ways. This is especially true when it comes to nonverbal communication, it is
communication between or among persons who come from various language, religious,
ethnic, social, and professional backgrounds. Communication is influenced by gender
differences as well. Individuals of all orientations communicate and perceive messages
in a variety of ways. This is especially true when it comes to nonverbal communication.

4. How can you listen to speaker’s opinions through electronic media without easily
swayed into accepting their opinions?

I think there is no difference listening to opinions of others in person and listening

to the opinions of others through electronic media. Because in my own
experience as you listen to what other people believe into or their opinions you
didn’t just agree immediately, you listen and think carefully and that’s the time
where the process of critical thinking happens. Just because something is
written down, does not make it true. We live in the world where propaganda
happens and judgemental people lives. So I think if therw would be any strategy
or advice that I can give in order not to being swayed easily into believing what
ever the speaker is saying to, about expressing his or her opinion about a certain
topic or issue, I would definitely say ' think before you believe' there a lot of
people who died, who suffered and who’ s in pain just because they was easily
swayed into believing about the opinions of others in social media. Yes social
media is a one of the most convenient and updated information platform but it
doesn’t mean it is reliable. Because even books and intelligent people make
mistake, believed in something that its not true. So at the end of the day the best
way into believing about something whenever your source is social media or any
form of electronic media research and find reliable sources, the more sources the
better, just take note to find a reliable source.

5. Of the four approaches employed in formal organization structure, which do you

think is the best? Cite situations which will call for the use of each approach. Give
one advantage of each.

If I’m going to answer this I would definitely say upward communication, also because
Employees directly contact with senior management to provide feedback, discuss ideas,
and raise issues about their day-to-day job and I find it important especially today,
where inequality and discrimination is very rampant in low position job. That sometimes
people who have low position are the one who were abuse by overworking with no
proper pay and benefits. I noticed also that a Companies that foster upward
communication enjoy many benefits such as workplace transparency, better team
collaboration, easier decision-making and, therefore, better employee experience.
Having a upward communication, where employees feel free to speak up, they are
much more likely to trust their employers and their managers. And in a workplace trust,
plays an important role in shaping positive employee experience, that is why companies
are now introducing new ways for employees to engage in upward communication.

Just like for instance employees can give their opinions about their work, it may be in
terms of benefits or work policy so by this company or higher position personal would be
able to know how to handle their employees concerns. After all their employees is the
blood of their business. Happy and contented employees results to productive
employess and it is an advantage for the company or business.
6. Would you know any strategy or method by which you can reduce the complexity
of understanding another culture? Do you think it will work with your current set
of foreign friends?

I think if there would be a effective way or strategy by which we can reduce the
complexity of understanding another culture is by Simply look at the types of
constructions they frequently utilize in their conversations. The greatest way to
learn about a new area is to observe it. Because the ability to observe is innate in
all of us, your subconscious mind is highly adept at it. Don't be intimidated by
foreign culture, which you may perceive as complex. There isn't a sophisticated
society to which man can't adapt. I believe that its only just in our mind that say
its hard but if we do it, it may be hard in the start but trust the process. Also as I
noticed nowadays it would be easier to learn and understand another culture by
watching their movies and dramas because I believe that dramas offers what
their country has, what kind of culture they have, what attitude and personality
they portray. Through watching drama, its one thousand times easier for me to
learn another culture because it is fun and the same time informative.

7. How do you differentiate formal communication from informal communication in

relation to purpose and style? Provide situations to illustrate the differences.

The difference between the two is that It uses formal language that is given orally
or in writing. Formal settings and writings include lectures, public talks/speeches,
research and project proposals, reports, and business communications, among
others. While lectures and speeches are presented verbally, the texts have been
thoroughly thought out and written before being delivered. The major goals of this
sort of communication are to inform, entertain, and persuade.

While the informal communication, from thw word itself informal, which means
It doesn’t use any formal language at all. It entails casual and informal
discussions with friends, family members, and acquaintances about anything and
everything. The manner of communication might be oral, as in face-to-face
conversations and phone calls, or written, as in e-mail messages, personal
notes, letters, or text messages. The goal is to simply socialize and strengthen
bonds. Best stituayional example of formal communication is when doing
business transactions while informal communication, happens when talking to a
friend like sharing your experience of your vacation.

2. you think cultures can be created? Modified? Changed

Absolutely yes, Culture has a tendency to change, to be created and modified.

This is due to the fact that culture comes from people, people are the ones that
create and maintain culture. Culture, after all, is a collection of common
information, beliefs, and practices. It evolves as humans generate new ideas or
combine old ones in unique ways. Some of them turn out to be useful or
enjoyable, so they spread. Culture is made up of a collection of common ideas
that evolves over time it can be changed it because people always aim for
progress and that would connect to the culture because at the end of the day
culture was made and comes from people. It can be modified since we are open
for other culture and somehow it influences us.
.

Chapter 2

Lesson 1

Pre discussion
1. Why do people communicate

THere are several reasons why we communicate, Some of it is is for the

reason to share information, make comments, ask questions, express wants
and needs, build social bonds, learn social etiquette, and so on. We
communicate for a reason that No entity can achieve its objectives without
communication, whether it is internal or external communication; all entities
require communication to build relationship and understanding. We
communicate for the sake of expressing ourselves, for others to understand
us hear our complaints and for us to seek understanding.

I do believe that people communicate to survive. It is something that we need

in order to survive, to progress and to be better. Even me, myself, can’t
imagine what would happen to me if I wont communicate with others. We are
given mouth, ears, eyes and knowledge for us to communicate. There are not
created for no reason, because we admit it or not it would be impossible for
us to live if we don’t comminicate . There is no man in island. That is why we
communicate, because not all the things in this world we know. Every living
person in this world knows something that you don’t. The only way to learn
those things is to communicate.

2. What might happen to the world if communication does not exist?

Well, I believe it is nearly impossible; every living creature is a social being,

and everyone requires interaction with others in order to express love,
feelings, and impressions to other people / creatures. You could imagine that
living in a world without communication is akin to living in a zombie society.
You can’t conduct evolution without any kind of interaction. Because
communication is one of, if not the most important, aspects of this world’s
survival, living, and peace, a world without it would be nothing more than a
damaged world.

Communication is crucial for the development of anything and everything.

People will not be able to offer their perspectives if there is no
communication. They will have to anylize everything on their own. Everything
will become meaningless without communication, life will become
emotionless, and it is impossible to imagine a world without sharing and
caring. If no humans are able to communicate with each other, then life would
literally be worthless and useless.

3. Why do miscommunication and misunderstanding happen?

It because we are lack of communication, maybe because one party is not

willing to understand what the other party wants to say. Most of the time, we
asked questions that we have already have an answer for ourselves, so the
answer of the person we're asking is irrelevant. In my own perspective
miscommunication and misunderstanding happens because people prefer to
listen simply to what is being said rather than UNDERSTANDING what is
being said, and because people tend to read the surface of written words
rather than delving deeper into the meanings beneath the words. There will
be no misunderstanding or misinterpretation if we listen, read, or watch with
the aim of grasping the intended message. We frequently interrupt other
people’s conversations based on our own knowledge.

ASSESSMENT/ENRICHMENT

1. Identify possible communication blocks in the following situations:

A. a written letter of complaint

The most significant and most likely communication barrier that

happens in a written letter of complaint is that the complainant may
feel attacked and dismiss your complaint as a result. As a result,
you must express your case nicely but forcefully, without sarcasm
or venom. Also wHen it comes to written communication, the
primary downsides I perceive are that it can be slow and time
consuming, and it frequently lacks a human touch. Finally, because
written communication does not provide nuances of voice tone or
facial expression, there is a higher risk of miscommunication.

B. Interaction between a nurse and a patient

Based on what I research and my own experience since my sister

was hospitalized for three times I notice that one of the
communication block that happens betweey a nurse and a patient
is that patient wont sometimes Follow The nurse and becomes
difficult. Also as for nurses they sometimes irritable which create
misunderstanding with the patient maybe because of frequent calls
or long hours, have ill patients that take up their time or don’t have
enough training in pain management.

C. In transacting or communicating in a global setting, what vital

preparations must be done? Why?

I think the vital preparation that should be done when transacting or

communicating in a global setting is to be armed with the thought of
being prepared to know how to speak and understand our universal
language. After all English language is a effective medium in
dealing transactions and communication in a global setting.
Also, In my opinion, in order to effectively communicate in a global
world is to begin by understanding that each country has different
business customs also we need to recognize we are
communicating with actual people. Another good idea is to always
keep friendly lines of communication open, which can be done by
showing a genuine interest in almost all countries & their people.

Concretizing

1. List various channels through which personnel of your university

connect with you. Which channel(s) do you find most effective?
Why?

As far as I know there are 5 communication channel in which

personnel of our univerity can connect to me, namely video
conferencing, email, social media, phone calls and text. And
among them I find social media as an effective communication
channel because I am really active in social media so if
someone from our university would want to contact me or
connect with me it would be best if they would contact me
through my social media. I am like 24/7 active in social media
that is why it is the most effective communication channel for
me.
Introspecting

In this lesson I learned that to be an effective and ethical communicator I should be

Someone who effectively communicates her message and is receptive to and
responsive to feedback from others. Strong communicators speak in a clear,
straightforward manner, using language that is easily understood. They are usually
forthright in expressing their views and opinions, but they are also receptive to
recommendations from others. Effective communicators maintain eye contact while
listening and use affirming language such as "I hear you" or "I understand your
concerns." Also Effective and ethical communicators communicate honestly and listen
carefully, and they are frequently the first people others seek guidance from. When you
know your opinion matters, it’s simpler to communicate frankly with someone. Being a
memorable communicator is an important part of being an effective communicator.
When your messages are distinctive, for example, others are more likely to remember
your ideas when they require a different viewpoint. Your communication style can
include inflections in your speech, body posture, humor, personal anecdotes, and other
factors.

Lesson 2
Pre discussion
1. Closer together yet further apart.

We are more connected than ever before in the history of the world: the internet
allows us to communicate with people on the other side of the globe in seconds,
and social media allows us to gain personal access into the lives of others. Living
standards are rising, and people are assisting one another thanks to social
welfare. On a bigger scale, nations collaborate for mutual benefit: the United
Nations and the European Union bring countries and people together to try to
stop suffering and violence.

However, as we get more connected, the gap between us grows. We become

more antisocial as a result of this same technology, as we overlook the people
around us in the real world in favor of those on the internet. Despite growing
living standards, the divide between rich and poor has never been wider and
continues to widen. And war and conflict highlight the contrasts between states
and ideologies: the hostilities between Israel and Palestine, as well as Russia
and Ukraine, are still raging as I speak. It’s a perplexing and somewhat tragic
dilemma with no clear resolution.

2.What do you think has contributed to the easy access and exchange of
information these days? Why?

The Internet has made a significant contribution to today’s simple access and
interchange of information. It now serves as a platform for the sharing of ideas,
opinions, and general information. Access to information and communication
technologies has increased dramatically around the world thanks to cell phones,
the internet, and electronic media. Thanks to the Internet, you can now send an
e-mail to anyone on the planet and have it sent in less than a minute. On the
internet, we can read newspapers from all over the world, and many of them are
free. You can learn important suggestions from someone who has already solved
a situation similar to yours by reading a blog. You can get involved in anything
that piques your interest. It could occur in politics, academics, business, or any
other setting.

Cause even me as a student I really believe that internet nowadays are the one
that give big contribution to the easy access and exchange of information these
days. Because through internet People will be able to connect with one another
more frequently. People can now connect with one another like they have never
been able to before thanks to social media. Modes:
The Internet has turned our world on its head. It has transformed
communications to the point where it is now our preferred mode of
communication on a daily basis. We utilize the Internet in practically every aspect
of our lives. Ordering pizza, purchasing a television, sharing a moment with a
buddy, and sending a photo over instant messaging are just a few examples. If
you wanted to keep up with the news before the Internet, you had to go down to
the newsstand first thing in the morning and buy a local edition reporting on the
previous day’s events. However, today, a few clicks are all it takes to read your
local paper as well as any news source from anywhere in the world, all of which
are updated to the minute.

Three. In transacting or communicating in a global setting, what vital preparations must

be done? Why?

Effective communication is essential in today’s globalized environment. In a global

setting, communication is crucial. The initial stage in developing good communications
is to understand your audience and the things that they are interested in, so that you
can easily gain their trust. Globalization has broadened our circle, allowing us to
communicate with people all around the world. Technology and the Internet, for
example, have greatly aided communication in recent years. However, because we can
only contact with people via social media or other platforms such as e-mail, we lack
communication skills, particularly when speaking with individuals face to face.

Someone can be fantastic on social media when communicating with others, but when
meeting people in person, he or she may not be as good as on social media or the
Internet. In today’s society, because we can’t see the person with whom we’re
conversing when we use a platform to communicate, we may misunderstand what he or
she is trying to express. In this scenario, the use of emoji is really beneficial because it
allows people to convey their feelings.
ASSESSMENT / ENRICHMENT

Activity 1

1. What global issues have emerged because of miscommunication?

Communication is an essential part of our existence. It’s the thread that binds us all together.
This fact would result in various disputes if it were not for this aspect. Miscommunication has
resulted in several global challenges such as war, corruption, discrimination, slavery, racism,
and poverty. Those global concerns have one thing in common: they are all dangers to global
security. It is a difficult task for us to develop a truly global society, one free of all sorts of
injustice. To accomplish this, we must make use of our global ability to communicate and
organize in response to the difficulties we now and shall encounter. Regardless of our culture,
there should be unseen threads that bind us together.

2. How can effective communication and language use contribute to the creation of a truly
global society?

War, terrorism, corruption, discrimination, and other types of injustice that violate human rights
are rare in a truly global society. Only by successfully utilizing communication as a tool for the
creation of a genuinely global society will we be able to achieve this. Because all types of social
connections rely on communication, communication serves as the foundation of society. It also
serves as a critical link between people in the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. People in
developed and developing countries were able to engage more easily because to
communication. The distance between them has narrowed. They can now concentrate on fixing
various issues by drawing attention to global security. By utilizing the various resources
available to you, you will be able to achieve your goals.
Activity 2

1. Formulate a possible strategy for you to be an effective global communicator.

To become a skilled or effective global communicator, one must first learn about the other
culture before attempting to speak with them. Each cultural language differs from the other due
to cultural differences. One must break out from the local communication that he is accustomed
to and adopt global communication. This can be difficult if the other culture isn’t well grasped,
and a lack of research might stymie good communication. in order to better understand another
culture, one must travel to it and immerse himself in it. Tan (9) tends to agree with this, noting
that each town has a unique method of conducting business, and that one must learn about that
community’s culture.

Understanding How To Read Between The Lines is a skill that can be learned.
Some cultures are extremely sensitive, and speaking with them should be done with extreme
caution. If you’re in a face-to-face meeting, learn to read the listeners’ body language to see if
your words are making them uncomfortable. If you’re talking over the phone, some acts, such
as silence on the other end, can imply a variety of reactions to the topic at hand.

ASSESSMENT / ENRICHMENT
Answer the following questions:
1. “Human beings draw close to one another by their common nature, but habits and
customs keep them apart.” (Confucius)Do you agree or disagree? Give concrete
situations to support your stand. Based on the concept learned in this lesson.
Humans, I believe, are drawn together by their common and unusual nature. I also believe that
their personal views and attitudes separate them more than their habits and customs. I enjoy
immersing myself in diverse cultures and learning about their histories, as well as participating
in them when and if possible. I’m sure a lot of other individuals do as well.

We are all one in my mind. We are complimentary to one another. We all feel and think
in fundamentally the same ways… so how can I deceive myself by imposing superficial
differences?Individual phobias and erroneous views about ourselves and the world
ingrained in childhood are the only things that separate us. They turn into rigid
standards that keep us from enjoying a life that is spontaneous, inclusive, and free….
Over several generations.Humans banded together in order to survive and built
civilizations. This gave us more freedom, but it also resulted in overcrowding. People
are craving seclusion and alone time as a result of this .Exclusive thinking, such as
ethnic, religious, status, gender, and other forms of thinking, tries to knock people down
and thus creates a divide and keeps people apart.

2. Identify a country where graduates of your program or field of specialization are

in demand. Research on the various cultural modes of communication that a
newly hired employee in that country should remember. Based on your research,
prepare a three-to four-minute presentation.

Lesson 4

PRE – DISCUSSION
The students will be tasked to present orally or in a written form the following questions.
1. How do you greet your best friend? Your mother? Your teacher? Your school
dean?

Well I greet my best friends in a very informal way, like I’ll greet them through
teasing them about something or greeting them with a slap in their arm. As for
my mother, I greet her formally, because I was not use to it. I grow up not seeing
my parents being sweet but instead I always saw them fighting that is why. While
to my teacher I greet them formally, I used ma’am or their surename same goes
with the school dean.
2. Do your ways of greeting these people vary?

Yes of course they vary in a way that my friends or my BestFriends are one of
the closest people in my, that is why the way I great them is informal. Maybe
because I feel comfortable when im with them and I think that what best friends
mostly do. . As for my mother I greet her formally most of the times because of
the reason that im not use to it and I find it corny if I greet them with no
reservations. While for my teacher and to my dean I great them formally, I greet
them using ma’am/ sir, accompanied by bowing my head a little. I am really a
formal person that is why I can’t find courage to get to close with my teacher or
any personnel in school that is why in my eighteen years of existence I always
greet my teachers formally as well as the school dean.

Lesson 5

PRE – DISCUSSION

1. Analyze any advertisement from TV, radio or any reading materials.

Inakup, Arekup,’
I saw this video when I was still eleven years old and it just stuck on my
mind up until now that I am already nineteen years old. This is about the
sad plight of a young girl who belongs to a large family. The young girl in
the commercial narrates how she was made to look after her younger
siblings. Her poor situation also forced her to quit school. She was
asking/blaming her parents for neglecting her and her siblings’ welfare for
not being “responsible parents”.

For me this advertisement was made for us Pilipinos to realize especially

for parents and now teenagers who are already a parent that they should
really plan for their family. Because at the end of the day you are not only
the one who will suffer but also the children. Children should experience
being a child, a child who can play outside with others, a child who can
have toys and a child who can wear school uniforms and go to school. Not
a child who are already exposed doing job that parents should be the one
doing.

I believe this government’s 48-second television commercial, ‘Inakup,

Arekup,’ was excellent in conveying a message. In a predominantly
Catholic country like the Philippines, family planning is a touchy subject.
Clergy in this area are strongly opposed to the marketing of artificial family
planning methods. The television commercial, in my opinion, does not
push people to use a particular method of contraception. It allows the
public to make their own decisions.

2. Generate questions and ideas about the message conveyed by the

advertisement.

I saw this when I was around 11 years old and the first question that pop
up on my mind is that, why is it in Philippines, the one who is poor are the
one who have a lot of children? Why is it Pilipino parents give their
responsibility to their children of taking care of their siblings? why does
Pilipino parents doesn’t send their children in school but instead letting
them or forcing them to work at an early stage of their life? acting as if its
their children responsibility to do those, where in fact its their children right
to be taking good care and enjoy the privileged of going to school.

I myself experience this, i experience not going to school just because I

need to take care of my younger siblings, that is why I do understand the
message being conveyed by the advertisement. There is nothing wrong in
having a big family but please do a family planning. This advertisement
wants to tell us Pilipinos that building a family is not easy so know your
capacity. Be responsible because not only us or the vhildren that would be
suffering in the end but also our country. So please consider family
planning.

The advocacy of family planning is to teach young generations especially

Teen Filipinos on how to control their family. Its very important here in the
Philippines because we have the biggest number of teen
pregnancies. Also, its not true that if u have many children,u also have
many help when u get older.Family Planning is a must.

ASSESSMENT / ENRICHMENT
Activity 1. Answer this question:
1. Make personal, world and text connections to an advertisement you chose.

I grow up in a poor and big family and trust me I know how it feels, I know the
feelings of the girl in the video. My experience may not be as bad as her but I
can say that its enough just for me to realize the importance of family planning. I
don’t want to say a final word about this topic because im just 19 years old, i
didn’t proved anything yet. But as a citizen of this country I think its time for
Pilipinos to be responsible not all the time government is there to support
everything. Advertisement like this is what we need especially now that teenage
pregnancies are very rampant. I think its time for educational institution to take
action about this matter. Having a subject that would show how complicated and
difficult engaging or building a family would somehow enlighten and make
student review their decision and actions.

There’s a right time for everything. There’s no rush. Its okay to engage in a
relationship but please know your limit and be safe. Just think about what
happened to the girl in the commercial. If you can’t picture out yourself being her
parents f then picture out yourself being her. Being a child is a wonderful and
happy stage of life of every person. This is a stage where all you think is to play
and play, a stage where in the word responsibility is unknown and the stage of
life you are supposedly dependent to your parents.

The people are the one who defines country’s present and future. A family that
is properly cared for, is a healthy family, and a healthy family is the foundation of
a healthy community. That leads to innovative country. Have a family planning
because it aims for the better. Always remember the good plan implemented
today is better than a perfect plan implemented tomorrow.. Be responsible and
make sound decisions in life. Life would be easier if we plan our life for what is
best. For tomorrow belongs to the people who prepared for it todah.

2. What are your observations or generalizations on how texts and/or images are
presented?

I must say that they are both presented properly. The text are very accurate for
what the advertisement want to convey. It is easy to understood as well as it
present real life situation. The text are to be sang and easy to remember I even
got LSS to the song. As for the image it gives justice to the text of the song. They
are connected. Just by looking to the images presented you will already know the
message of the advertisement and also I noticed that it is full of emotions. It feels
so real that is why I just so hooked to that commercial that up until now I still
remember it.

3. In what ways should media present texts/images about various cultures?

If I would to answer I find dramas more effective. Todays generation people

would rather watch it if it is a companied by drama.
