Lotus Flower

Lotus (Nymphaea) is the genus name for aquatic plants of the Nymphaeaceae tribe. In English it
is known as water-lily or waterlily. In Indonesia, lotus is also used to refer to plants of the genus
Nelumbo (lotus). In ancient times, people used to confuse plants of the Nelumbo genus such as
lotus with the Nymphaea (lotus) genus. In Nelumbo, the flowers are above the water surface (not
floating), the petals are red (the lotus is white to yellow), the leaves are full circle and the
rhizome is usually consumed.

Plants grow on the surface of still water. Flowers and leaves are found on the surface of the
water, coming out of stems from rhizomes that are in the mud at the bottom of ponds, rivers or
swamps. The stalk is in the middle of the leaf. The leaves are round or broadly oval in shape that
are truncated at the radius to the stalk. The leaf surface does not contain a waxy layer so that the
water that falls on the leaf surface does not form water droplets.

Flowers are on the stalk which is an extension of the rhizome. Flower diameter between 5-10 cm.
The lotus consists of about 50 species spread from tropical to subtropical regions throughout the
world. The lotus that grows in the tropics comes from Egypt.
