Lesson Plan in Mathematics

The lesson plan outlines a math lesson on showing the associative property of addition. Students will participate in drills and group activities to demonstrate changing the grouping of addends does not change the sum. They will apply the concept to word problems and discuss the differences between associative and commutative properties of addition.

Lesson Plan in Mathematics

School: Doña Josefa Pelaez Reyes Central School

Grade / Section: II- Daffodil
Teacher: Lucia S. Jumo
Learning Area Quarter: Math Q1
Teaching Date & Time: Oct. 17, 2022 | 8:00-8:50
A. Content Standards:
Demonstrate understanding of addition of whole numbers up to 1000 including money
B. Performance Standards:
Apply addition of whole members up to 1000 including money in mathematical problems and real
life situations

C. Learning Competency and Code:

Illustrates the properties of addition (commutative and associative identity) and applies each in
appropriate and relevant situations
M2 NS – Ig – 26.3 Q1 W8 D1
I. Objectives:
At the end of 50 minutes 80% of the learners are expected to:
Cognitive: Show associative of addition in adding numbers
Show that changing the grouping of addends make computation easy
Psychomotor: Make addition combinations with 2 or 3 addends
Affective: Participate actively in class activities
II. Subject Matter: Showing the associative property of addition
Integration:
Values: Cooperation / care of plants in the environment
Reading: Read Aloud
P.E.: Sportsmanship
Music: Sing with feeling / Action
Aral Pan.: Iba’t-ibang Halaman sa Paligid
Strategies:
Explicit Instruction, Cooperative Learning Approach, Differentiated Instruction
Reference: MELC _____________, LM p. 61-63 CG 18-19
Materials: Real objects, flashcards, metacards with addition facts, show me board, cut-out, fruits,
laptop
III. Procedure: Pupil’s Activity
Techer’s Acitivity Pupils give the sum
A. Drill: Show and Tell Game (Essentialism)
Divide the class into 3 groups Group Eagle, Group 10+5= ___________
Hawk, and Group Nightingale. Each group will tell the 9+6= ___________
sum of the given numbers in the flashcards flashed. 8+7= ___________
This is done in contest. Who’s group can answer first 9+3= ___________
and earned more points will be proclaimed as winner 5+4= ___________
10+4= ___________

B. Review (Essentialism) Group Eagle

Each group will be given materials to count. After
3 white ballpens
counting write the number sentence in the show board
4 blue ballpens
using commutative property of addition.
5 yellow pencils
How many writing materials in all?
(3+4)+5
7 +5 = 12
Group Hawk

6 green with white leaves

8 browns leaves
7 green leaves
How many leaves you have in all?
(6+8)+7
14 +7 = 21

Group Nightingale

4 pieces of ₱1000 bill of play money

2 pieces of ₱100 bill of play money
3 pieces of ₱20 bill of play money
What is the total amount of your money?
(1000+200)+60
1200 + 60
= ₱1, 260

C. Motivation: (Perrenialism) Pupils share their experiences

1. Ask the pupils about their experiences in the farm. Let
them share what they observed.
2. Read the given problem aloud. Then let them write the
number sentence mentioned in the problem on their
show board.

Susan visited her lola and lolo live in the farm. Lolo Number sentence
and lola were very happy when Susan greeted them.
Then lola served her a plate of fruits for her snacks. (5+6)+8
On the plate there was 5 pieces of avocado, 6 pieces of 11+8 = 19
mango, and 8 pieces of big guavas. How many fruits
altogether was there on the plate for Susan’s snack?
Give the number sentence. Solve it by using
Commutative property of addition. What is the sum?
Show your answer in your show board. Appreciate
their output by having a barangay clap
(Behavioralism)

D. Presentation (Progressivism)
Use the same number sentence as example for
associative property of addition. Call 10 pupils for a
fancy drill. The rest will sing the song “I’m in Lord’s
Army. Arrange the 10 pupils carrying the number
cards.
Let the class explain the arrangement of parentheses
and sum.
Ask: What was changed? Parentheses

To what number the parentheses was placed? (2nd & 3rd)

Is there changes of the sum? No

E. Discussion: (Constructivism)
What do we call this property of addition? Associative property of Addition

What is the difference of associative property to

commutative property of addition? In commutative the placement of
Where is the placement of parentheses in parentheses is on the 1st and 2nd number.
commutative?
How about the Associative? In Associative property the placement of
parentheses is on the 2nd and 3rd place
Is there difference of the sum? No

F. Application: (Existentialism) Group Eagle

Group work Auntie Lita has 7 ducks. 3 hens and 5

Read the problem given in your group. Write the roosters in her backyard. How many
number sentence showing associative property of animals does she have in all?
addition in your show board and write the sum. Then
explain how did you get your answer. 7+ (3+5)
7+ 8 = 15
Kris Aquino Clap

Group Hawk

Lorna put ₱900.00 in her toy pig on

Monday, ₱50.00 on Tuesday and ₱9.00 on
Wednesday. How much is the savings of
Lorna for days?

900+ (50+9)
900+ 59 = 959

Group Nightingale

Choose the correct number from the boxes

to complete the number sentence in
Associative property of Addition

1. 5+ (8+6) 6 4 5 = 19

Dionesia Clap 2. 5+ (6+4) 9 4 6 = 15

3. 8+ (9+4) 2 8 4 = 21
G. Generalization: (Constructivism) The parentheses is placed in the 2nd and 3rd
How will you know that the number sentence is in addends
associative property of addition?

Why do we need to regroup the addends? To get the sum of the addends easily

In our daily lives can we use regrouping to solve our Yes / no

problem?

Example if you come to school always late what will To wake up early
you change so that you will not be late always?

What are other examples / experiences you know? Pupils share changes

IV. Evaluation: 1. 3 + 4 + 2 = 3+ (4+2)

A. Write the exact placement of the parentheses 3+ 6 = 9
showing associative property of addition then give
the sum. 2. 7 + 1 + 3 = 7+ (1+3)
7+ 4 = 11

3. ₱400.00+(₱50.00+₱7.00 )= ₱457.00

B. Choose the correct answer from the box to 4. 5 + 8 + 6 6 4 5 = 17

complete the number sentence
5. 8 + 9 + 4 7 4 3 = 21

V. Assignment
Fill the missing addends to prove that the sum is
correct.

= 15 = 15
2 7 _____ 2 +7 +6
= 15 = 15
9 ____ 1 9 +5 +1
= 15 = 15
____ 3 8 4 +3 +8

15 15 15 ? 15 15 15 45
