Introduction
miniQAR Advanced Support Utility User’s Guide Part Number: 900-0179 | Rev: S
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Overview
The Avionica miniQAR Advanced Support Utility (ASU) P/N: 700-0179 version BC or later is
used to download digital flight data from Avionica miniQAR MkII, miniQAR MkIII, avRDC QAR,
and avRDC MAX QAR recorders. The ASU runs on an Avionica Ruggedized Service Unit
(RSU) or on a PC computer running Windows 10 Pro 20H2 or later.
Throughout this manual, recorders supported by the ASU will be identified by the following
labels: miniQAR MkII recorders will be identified as “MkII.” miniQAR MkIII, avRDC QAR, and
avRDC MAX QAR recorders will all be identified as “QAR” unless there is a requirement to list
them separately. The ASU can download the MkII or MkIII using either a USB or Ethernet
connection. The ASU can download the avRDC (or MAX) using an Ethernet connection only.
For procedures that involve making selections on-screen, the word “click” is used as the action
to make the selection. For touch screen devices, replace this action with “press”.
If the Avionica avCM is connected, consider the following:
1. Use the on-aircraft procedure with Ethernet connection only for avRDC (or MAX).
2. Disconnect the avCM when connected to MkIII.
1.2 Requirements
The minimum system requirements are:
• Laptop PC (733 MHz or better)
• 256 MB RAM minimum
• 4 GB or larger hard disk
• Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows 10 Pro 20H2 or later)
• USB port
• RJ45 CAT 5E Ethernet port (QAR)

The files are usually named using an automatic naming procedure which guarantees each
downloaded file has a unique name (e.g., 81234567.tsc and 81234567.txt). However, this
behavior can be modified on the Download Settings page (see Section 3.5). Note also that this
behavior is different if you have the file splitting option enabled; see Download File
Management, Section 6.3.
In the main dialog box for the ASU, the user can enter or select an aircraft number.
1) The aircraft numbers that are available for selection are stored in the acnum.txt file, which
may be found in the ASU application directory (usually C:\Program
Files\Avionica\miniQAR). If the text file does not exist you will need to create it. The text
file lists the available aircraft number selections, one on each line. You may add to, edit, or
delete from this list as appropriate to modify the list of available selections in the dialog
box.

NOTE: The ASU generates output files automatically. A complete explanation of generated files and
their respective naming conventions are provided in SL-386.
TAILNUM=N12345
This field indicates the aircraft number that was provided by the user in the main dialog before
performing the download, in this case “N12345.”
Each of the tokens that will normally appear in the text file is described below. Note that there
may be additional tokens not described below, and that the ordering of the fields in the text file
is not guaranteed to be consistent. Also, some applications may wish to use different text
strings for the tokens described below; a feature called “token substitution,” described in
Section 2.5.1 below, is available for this purpose.
1) CUST - The value of the CUST token indicates the customer (company) which has
licensed the ASU from Avionica. It comes from the value that was entered when the ASU
was installed.
2) DATE - The value of the DATE token indicates the exact date and time that the download
was performed, in GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). The value is in the format mm/dd /yyyy
hh:mm:ss.
3) DFDR - The value of the DFDR token indicates the device that the downloaded data was
recorded on. For downloads from the MkII, the value will always read MQAR2. For
downloads from the QAR, the value will always read MQAR3.
4) MQDLTIME - The value of the MQDLTIME token indicates the time stamp, as recorded by
the clock built into the MkII or QAR, at the time of the download. The QAR contains a real-
time clock, which records actual time in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). The
MQDLTIME token is a decimal representation of the time as recorded by this clock.
NOTE: The MkII miniQAR’s clock does not record real time, but elapsed time (number
of seconds) since activation of the unit.
5) SERIALNUM - The value of the SERIALNUM token indicates the serial number of the MkII
or QAR from which the download was performed.
Page 33

Download File Management
miniQAR Advanced Support Utility User’s Guide Part Number: 900-0179 | Rev: S
6) STATION - The value of the STATION token indicates the airport or airport code at which
the download was performed. It comes from the value that was entered by the user in the
Download Airport field of the download dialog box before performing the download.
7) TAILNUM - The value of the TAILNUM token indicates the aircraft number from which the
download originated. It comes from the value that was entered or selected by the user in
the Aircraft Number field of the download dialog box before performing the download.
8) VERSION - The value of the VERSION token indicates the current version of the ASU
software.

2) From this dialog box, you can control options related to the file-splitting operation. These
options control how you name the files once they are split and are described below:
(a) Use Common Naming Scheme - The default behavior is to name them using a
common naming scheme. This means that the files will be named the same every
time. The name used will be the text “MQAR” followed by a four-digit sequential
number (0001, 0002, 0003, etc.), indicating the ordinal flight number. So for a
download of data with three flights, you will get the files MQAR0001.tsc,
MQAR0002.tsc, and MQAR0003.tsc. Please note that since the file names are the
same after every download, files from previous download operations will be
overwritten when a new operation is performed. To avoid this, you may wish to use
the unique naming scheme, described next. Note that for each TSC file generated,
there will also be a TXT file with the same name containing the textual information
associated with the file.
(b) Use Unique Naming Scheme - The default behavior is the common naming scheme,
described previously. The unique naming scheme ensures that each time you
perform a download, the files are assigned a unique name, based on the current
time. In this case, the first five digits of the file name will be the unique part, and the
last three digits will be a sequential number (001, 002, 003, etc.), indicating the
ordinal flight number. So for a download of data with three flights, with the unique
part being “f29xz,” you will get the files f29xz001.tsc, f29xz002.tsc, and f29xz003.tsc.
Note that for each TSC file generated, there will also be a TXT file with the same
name containing the textual information associated with the file.
(c) Output Directory - Enter into this field the directory where the files will be placed after
splitting. Type the full path of the directory into the edit field or click the “…” button to
navigate to the directory in a dialog box.
(d) Don’t Allow Segments Shorter Than -The file splitting operation looks for special
information in the data stream that indicate a power-up condition. Since multip[le
power-up conditions may occur in quick succession when the aircraft is on the
ground, this can result in several small files being generated which are not actually
flights. To avoid generating too many of these files, you may place a lower limit on
the amount of data to separate into individual files. This lower limit is specified in
terms of the number of seconds worth of data that is read in. The default is 20
seconds, which means that during the splitting operation, no individual file will be
created that contains less than 20 seconds worth of data. To change this limit, you
may specify any positive number of seconds in this field. For instance, to enforce a
lower limit of 1 minute, enter 60.
1) Select Extract 717 Data From 429 Data Stream and enter the required ARINC 429 label
into the text box. Currently known systems utilize label 300 Octal.

3) Return To Service - Click the RETURN TO SERVICE button to perform the return-to-
service test. This operation performs a basic functional test to ensure proper operation of
the MkII or QAR prior to re-installation of the unit on the aircraft. The Return to Service
operation must be performed prior to moving a QAR from one aircraft to another.
NOTE 1: Before performing a Return to Service, ensure computer IP address and USB /
Ethernet selection is set up properly for your Unit Under Test (UUT). Refer to
Section 3.0, Download Settings.
NOTE 2: If the QAR is installed on an aircraft and the aircraft is energized, remove power
from DFDR or FDAU or any source of ARINC 717/573 data to the QAR, before
performing a QAR Return To Service.
NOTE 3: If Set Host IP On Startup dialog box is displayed during Return to Service,
disable any network adapter not used by the UUT, then repeat test. Refer to
Section 5.2, Disable Network Adapter.

software downloads the communication log files from the QAR. The software creates a
folder in your download directory and names it after the serial number of the QAR you
downloaded from. The software then places the log files in this directory.
16) Set IP Address (MkII) - The MkII defaults to an IP address of 192.168.1.10 and the port
number defaults to 9194. Normally you will not need to change these settings. However, if
you are using multiple MkII miniQARs on a Local Area Network (LAN), you will need to
assign unique IP addresses to each of them. Click the SET IP ADDRESS button to bring
up a dialog box which allows you to enter a new IP address and port number.
17) Done - Click the DONE button to exit from the Tools dialog box and return to the main
ASU screen.
18) Send Message Packet (QAR Only) - Check the Send ‘message packet’ checkbox to
detect when miniQAR is ready to communicate. This enables sending a PING message
packet to test if the QAR is connected and available. On Windows 10 Pro 20H2 or later
and some firewall settings on a PC, a PING is sometimes blocked which can cause a
false error response.
