ANGELOLOGY II

5 DIVISION OF ANGELS
1. SERAPHIM
a. Isaiah 6:1-7 - In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a
throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six
wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with
two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
4
At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with
smoke.
5
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people
of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
6
Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs
from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your
guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
b. Associated or connected with God’s glory
c. They reveal God’s glory
2. CHERUBIMS
a. Ezekiel 1 - 5 and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form
was human, 6 but each of them had four faces and four wings. 7 Their legs were straight; their feet
were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze. 8 Under their wings on their four
sides they had human hands. All four of them had faces and wings, 9 and the wings of one
touched the wings of another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved.
b. Deals with the work of the Holy Spirit (V20) - 20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would
go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in
the wheels.
c. They respond to Holy Spirit’s work in heaven.
3. LIVING CREATURE
a. Revelation 4:6-9 -6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as
crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with
eyes, in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox,
the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living
creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and
night they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’[b] who was, and is,
and is to come.”
9
Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and
who lives for ever and ever,
b. Deal with worship
c. Deal with revelation
4. ARCHANGEL
a. Revelation 12:7 - 7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the
dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back.
b. Deal with warfare
c. Protection of the saints
d. Michael – (Protecting Jewish Nation, warring against Satan)
5. COMMON ANGEL
a. Hebrews 1:14 - 14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will
inherit salvation?
SOME INFORMATION ABOUT ANGELS
1. A SINGLE ANGEL CAN KILL MANY (ISAIAH 37:36)
a. 36 Then the angel[a] of the LORD went out, and [b]killed in the camp of the Assyrians one
hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there
were the corpses—all dead.

2. ANGELS ARE PATIENT (NUMBERS 22:22-35 – BALAAM, THE DONKEY AND THE ANGEL)

3. THEY ARE LIMITED IN KNOWLEDGE (MARK 13:32)

a. 32 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only
the Father.

4. THEY LEAD SINNERS TO THE GOSPEL (ACTS 10:3)

a. 3 About [a]the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and
saying to him, “Cornelius!”

5. THEY ARE TAUGHT WHO GOD IS BY WATCHING THE CHURCH (EPHESIANS 3:10)
a. 10 God’s purpose in all this was to use the church to display his wisdom in its rich variety to all
the unseen rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.

6. THEY DESIRE TO KNOW THE THINGS OF SALVATITON (1 PETER 1:10-12)

a. 10 Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the
grace that would come to you, 11 searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who
was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories
that would follow. 12 To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to [a]us they were
ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached
the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.

7. THEY ARE WITH US ALLTHE TIME (PSALM 34:7)

a. The [a]angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them.

8. THEY WILL HARM US IF WE SPEAK WRONG THINGS (ECCLESIASTES 5:6)

a. 6 Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an
error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?

9. DO NOT PROVOKE ANGELS (EXODUS 23:20-23)

a. 20 “Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place
which I have prepared. 21 Beware of Him and obey His voice; do not provoke Him, for He
will not pardon your transgressions; for My name is in Him. 22 But if you indeed obey His voice
and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your
adversaries. 23 For My Angel will go before you and bring you in to the Amorites and the Hittites
and the Perizzites and the Canaanites and the Hivites and the Jebusites; and I will [a]cut them off.
From Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition are likewise known the Archangels:
Gabriel -- strength (power) of God, herald and servitor of Divine almightiness (Dan 8:16, Lk 1:26)

On icons the Archangels are depicted in accord with the trait of their service:

right hand a spear with a white banner (or sometimes a fiery sword), on which is outlined a scarlet cross.
Gabriel -- with a branch from paradise, presented by him to the Most Holy Virgin, or with a shining
lantern in his right hand and with a mirror made of jasper in his left.
Raphael -- holds a vessel with healing medications in his left hand, and with his right hand leads Tobias,
carrying the fish [for healing -- Tobit 5-8].
Uriel -- in raised right hand hold a bare sword at the level of his chest, and in his lowered left hand "a
fiery flame."
