Part 1: Relay Logic Diagram
1. What are the basic differences between contactor and relay and why the relay couldn’t
be used instead of the contactor and vice versa?

2. What are the main function of overload relay?

3. Explain the operation and function of Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) and Moulded
Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB)?

4. Draw power and control circuits for start-stop three phase induction motor by using
normally open (N.O) pushbutton for start and normally close (N.C) pushbutton for stop.
When the start pushbutton is pressed, the motor turned on and stays on until the stop
pushbutton is pressed. Insert two pilot lights. The first one turned on when the motor
start running. The second one turned on when the motor overloaded.

5. Draw power and control circuits for start-stop three phase induction motor by using
normally open (N.O) pushbutton for start and normally close (N.C) pushbutton for stop.
There is a limit sensor (limit switch) and its contact is normally open (N.O), If the limit
switch is closed its contact the motor will be turned off.

6. Draw power and control circuits for three phase induction motor to operate in two
directions by using two normally open (N.O) pushbuttons for start forward and
backward directions and only one normally close (N.C) pushbutton for stop motor
operation.

a) Indirect Reverse Operation (to change the direction must press stop button)
b) Direct Reverse Operation (change the direction without pressing stop button)

7. Draw the relay logic diagram for a circuit that start-stop motor by using a single normally
open (N.O) pushbutton. The motor will operate when the pushbutton is pressed and
stay running when the pushbutton is released. When the pushbutton is pressed again
the motor will be turned off and stay off until the pushbutton is pressed again to run
motor, and so on.

8. Draw the relay logic diagram for a circuit that operates as follows:

• When switch one (SW1) is closed, the green pilot light turns on.
• When switch two (SW2) is closed, the yellow pilot light turns on.
• When both SW1 and SW2 are closed, the green and yellow pilot lights turn off,
and the red and white pilot lights turn on.

9. Draw the relay logic diagram for the following:

a) Three phase induction motor operates by single pushbutton (N.O) for indirect
reverse operation as (right – stop – left – stop – right – stop …. and so on).

b) Three phase induction motor operates by single pushbutton (N.O) for direct
reverse operation as (right – left – stop – right – left – stop …. and so on).

10. Draw the relay logic diagram for a bulb in a staircase which has two switches (toggle
switches), one switch being at the ground floor and the other one at the first floor. The
bulb can be turned ON and can be turned OFF by any one of the switches irrespective
of the state of the other switch.

11. Draw power and control circuits for start-stop three phase induction motor (Star – Delta
Connection) by using normally open (N.O) pushbutton for start and normally close
(N.C) pushbutton for stop. The motor starting its operation in star connection for 10
seconds and then continue its operation in delta connection.

12. Draw the relay logic diagram for the following:
