Context and Rationale

The Philippines' malnutrition rate has remained essentially unchanged over the previous
years. Malnutrition is defined as the unhealthy condition that results from not eating enough
food or not eating enough healthy food: poor nutrition (Dictionary, n.d.) Malnutrition is brought
on by an insufficient, out-of-balance, or excessive intake of macronutrients, micronutrients, or
both (Encyclopedia, n.d.).
Malnutrition has an impact on the mental capacity, behavior, and overall wellness of the
students indirectly influencing school academic performance. So the Department of Education
has implemented programs and projects to address this problem of an increasing number of
malnourished students in the country. More collaboration between parents, educators, and
other sectors was encouraged to improve health and nutrition among children. The
Implementation of a School-Based Feeding Program is one of the DepEd nutrition programs.
DepEd (Education, n.d.)Order No. 039, s., has served as a roadmap for the implementation of
the SBFP. 2017 or the Operational Guidelines on the Implementation of the School-Based
Feeding Program for the School Years (SY) 2017–2022, as well as by the addendum rules
released by DepEd for the Fiscal Years (FY) 2018 and 2019.
The DepEd School-Based Feeding Program is necessary to give learners a healthy diet,
which will help them pay attention for longer periods of time and do better in school. According
to Adelman, 2008, the School-Based Feeding Program is essential to a child's entire
development. Additionally, it is anticipated that this approach will reduce the dropout and
failure rate. The Department of Education is aware of the value of proper nutrition in raising
students' academic performance.
All schools in Cavite followed this DepEd program and after the two-year online modality,
the SBFP was implemented again. Considering these circumstances, the researchers proposed to
conduct this study in order to determine the effect of the school's feeding program on students'
nutritional status and academic performance at Cavite Science Integrated School.

Action Research Questions

The researchers seek the answer to the following questions.
1. What is the demographic profile of respondents in terms of:
a. Age
b. Gender
c. Grade Level

2. What are the nutritional status and academic performance of the feeding recipients in
terms of:
2.1. Body Mass Index (BMI) before and after exposure to feeding program?
2.2. General average of the learners before and after their exposure to the feeding
program?
3. Is there a significant difference in the nutritional status and academic performance of the
feeding recipients in terms of:

3.1. Body Mass Index (BMI) before and after exposure to feeding program?
3.2. General average of the learners before and after their exposure to the feeding
program?
4. What are the problems encountered by the feeding teacher/s in managing the program?

Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

The school-based feeding program for SY: 2022-202 was launched to fight the effect of
malnutrition on the academic performance and well-being of the learners. These students will
receive a meal for their lunch consisting of body-building, body-regulating, and energy-giving
foods. Furthermore, this program will end at the end of the school year.

Action Research Methods
A. Participants and/or other Source Data and Information
There are nineteen learners used in the study. These students are purposely selected
based on their Body Mass Index (BMI) Status. Furthermore, these students are from Grades 7 to
Grade 12 that are classified as severely stunted. The personal information of the learners is
subject to Republic Act 10173, "The Data Privacy Act of 2012". Lastly, the learners must provide
a consent form signed by their parent/guardian, indicating they can participate in the research
study.

B. Data Gathering Methods

To determine the significance level of the implementation of the school-based feeding
program, the researchers determined their nutritional status, especially their Body Mass Index,
before and after the program's implementation. Furthermore, the demographic profile of learners
and the response of the canteen manager on problems they faced during the program
implementation were determined using survey questions.
The researchers used the adopted instrument from a similar study. Moreover, this tool
will be revised by the researcher and validated by the Master Teacher in MAPEH.

C. Data Analysis Plan

This research study is an example of a quantitative research study. The data gathered
after the program's implementation will be treated using paired t-tests using IBM SPSS
Statistics. This software will be used to determine if there is a significant difference in the
implementation of the feeding program in improving the learners' nutritional status and
academic performance when grouped according to age, gender, and grade level.
