Treatment - Hannah Whittall: Product
Product Our product is a two minute opening sequence to a thriller movie. Weve envisaged our product to be displayed in cinemas in between showings of thriller movies which have similarities to our own product. We also thought about showing our product on television channels. Movie/film channels especially like Sky Thriller, Sky Showcase or others such as the Syfy channel.
Target Audience
Our product has a film classification of 15. We chose this age because we think children below this age may find aspects of our piece disturbing and in other cases may not even relate enough to our main characters to enjoy watching it. Essentially, anyone under this age would in a sense be too immature to fully understand our product in its entirety. However, just because it has an age rating of 15 doesnt mean this is the only market we want to approach. Wed hope to aim our finished product to a range of people from late teenage years all the way up to adults.
Context
Our product will eventually be broadcasted on the website Youtube. This means that our piece needs to be eye catching and memorable enough for people to want to watch and then leave feedback in the sense of a comment of which we can use to review how well put together our overall product is.
Media Concepts
Media Languages
The style of our product will be the same as a traditional thriller film as we want to stay true to the genre. Were going to use dim or maybe even flickering lighting to create a dense, suspenseful and dark atmosphere. Well use camera angles such as close-ups to show the pain and emotion on our characters faces, well show long shots to depict the scene those same characters are in and to set the scene. Well use eerie, piercing sounds and music to intensify the atmosphere and to compliment the emotions of the character at any one time. Well switch between different scenes and camera angles in order to keep the viewers guessing and on the edge of their seats. This will also help us to create suspense throughout.
Institutions
Distributing We feel one of the best choice of distributor for our product will be Universal Pictures.
We believe Universal Pictures is a good choice to distribute our film because it is a well known, popular company who distributes a variety and wide range of films for different genres and difference audiences. Distributors who specialise in specific genres or specific types of film are usually not as popular or well known. Using a popular distributor would ensure that our product reaches out to as much of our target audience as possible. Our Production Company We decided to call our production team Dead Beat Productions. We decided on this because we thought it was a simple, yet effective name that made it clear what kind of product we wanted to produce. We thought its reference of death makes it clear were either promoting horror or thriller movies etc. And the idea of your heart beating with suspense when watching a thriller movie is where the second part of our reference came from. I also had an idea in mind for how we could relate the name
to the logo which was eventually designed as follows: I feel the logo turned out clear, clean and simple whilst having colours that relate to our genre without being over the top or overcrowded. We wanted the logo to send out the same clear message as our company name referenced. Representations Were having a stereotypical protagonist. She is female, a young adult, naive and is shown to be unprotected and isolated in the movie. This is a pretty common representation of a protagonist. Were also having an antagonist, but in a sense, shes not very stereotypical. Shes also female. Having a female, in a dominant,
controlling role is unusual as in a lot of typical thriller films there is a male playing this part. We feel by also having this character as female well be able to separate out product from other pieces of the same genre, therefore making it more recognisable and a little different.
Genre
Thriller is a genre that typically uses tension, suspense and excitement as its main elements. Not revealing essential information to the audience and fight/chase scenes are also common motifs in the genre. Elements of sub genres like psychological thrillers include elements such as confinement, stalking and obsession. We are only capturing the first two minutes of a thriller movie, but we feel we will be using quite a few of these elements even though the time we have is brief. We have a ghost like figure who is following, or stalking, our protagonist and because we dont find out the story behind this she may well be obsessed with the main character. The protagonist is confined or isolated in this deserted building and so thats another aspect we will be applying to our product that is typical to the genre. The fact that the setting is a deserted building is also typical because the atmosphere is usually very eerie, silent and deserted.
