LENGTH

NAME: _______________________________

CLASS: _______________________________

1
Length
You can measure how long things are, or how
tall, or how far apart they are from each other.
These are all examples of length measurements.

The most common units of measurement for

length are:

 millimetres (mm)
 centimetres (cm)
 metres (m)
 kilometres (km)
Small units of length are called millimetres (mm). A millimetre is about
the thickness of a credit card or about the thickness of 10 sheets of paper on
top of each other. This is a very small measurement!

When you have 10 millimetres, it can be called a centimetre (cm). A fingernail

is about one centimetre wide.

1 centimetre = 10 millimetres
You might use millimetres or centimetres to measure how tall you are or how
wide a table is, but you would not use them to measure the length of a football
field or the width of a road. In order to do that, you can switch to metres.

A metre is equal to 100 centimetres. The width of a doorway is about 1 metre.

Metres might be used to measure the length of a house or the size of a
playground.

1 metre = 100 centimetres

A kilometre is equal to 1000 metres. When you need to get from one place to
another, you measure the distance using kilometres. The distance from one
city to another or how far a plane travels would be measured using kilometres.

1 kilometre = 1000 metres

2
Length
To measure length we use the units of measurement below:

metres centimetres millimetres kilometres

1. Write these measurements out in order of size, starting with the

smallest.

2. How would you write these units of measurements in short form?
