Achilles - The Trojan War Hero

Achilles is one of the most important and main character of Iliad by

Homer. The Iliad is about the Trojan War, but it is primarily about
the war as it is affected by Achilles' wrath, or anger. Achilles was a
hero of the Trojan War and also was the greatest warrior in the Greek
army.

Birth and Prophecy

Achilles was the son of the Thetis, Goddess of Sea and Peleus, king of Achilles
Phthia. Thetis bathed Achilles as an infant in the waters, thus making him
immortal. She gripped him tightly by the foot so tightly that the water never touched his heel.
As a result, Achilles was invulnerable everywhere but there. When he was 9 years old, a Seer
predicted that Achilles would die heroically in battle against the Trojans. When Thetis heard
about this, she disguised him as a girl and hid him among the women. To be a great warrior
was Achilles’ fate, he joined the Greek army.

The Reason of Trojan War and Involvement of Achilles

The Trojan War began when the god-king Zeus decided to reduce Earth’s mortal population
by arranging a war between the Greeks and the Trojan. He did this by interfering in their
political and emotional affairs. The war began after the Trojan prince, Paris seduced
Menelaus’s wife Helen. Helen’s husband Menelaus convinced his brother Agamemnon, king
of Mycenae, to retrieve her. Agamemnon was joined by the Greek hero Achilles and some
others.

Conflict between Agamemnon and Achilles

The Iliad starts with the conflict between Agamemnon and Achilles. Conflict between
Agamemnon and Achilles was happened for the distribution of booty (when one party defeats
other party in a war and those who win, they take away all the defeated) as booty's results the
young girl Chryseis was selected as an appropriate prize for Agamemnon and another young

1
girl Briseis was selected for Achilles, But Agamemnon demanded Breseis as replacement.
Achilles was offended by Agamemnon's decision, and he then decided to withdrawing himself
and his men from the conflict for Agamemnon.

Returned to the Battle

Achilles would not fight, but he would let Patroclus use his powerful armor as a disguise. That
way, the Trojans would think that Achilles had returned to battle and would retreat in fear. The
plan was working until the Trojan prince Hector find and kill Patroclus. Achilles was filled
with grief and rage and returned to the battle, routed the Trojans, and killed Hector.

Death
However, as prophesized, Achilles died from an arrow wound in the vulnerable heel. The
arrow was shot by Paris, the brother of Troy’s hero Hector, whom Achilles had previously
killed in a face to face duel, in an attempt to avenge the death of his closest friend, Patroclus.
