General Information 0
This service guide provides all technical information relating to the basic configuration
for Acer’s global product offering. To better fit local market requirements and enhance
product competitiveness, the regional office may have decided to extend the
functionality of a machine (such as add-on cards, modems, or extra memory capabilities).
These localized features are not covered in this generic service guide. In such cases,
contact the regional offices or the responsible personnel/channel to provide further
technical details.
When ordering FRU parts: Check the most up-to-date information available on the
Website. If, for whatever reason, a part number change is made, it may not be noted in
this printed service guide.
Acer-authorized Service Providers: The Acer office may have a different part number
code than those given in the FRU list in this service guide. A list must be provided by the
regional Acer office to order FRU parts for repair and service of customer machines.

Other Functions Failure 0
Troubleshooting 4-15
Intermittent Problems 0
Intermittent system hang problems can be caused by a variety of reasons that have
nothing to do with a hardware defect, such as: cosmic radiation, electrostatic discharge,
or software errors. FRU replacement should be considered only when a recurring
problem exists.
When analyzing an intermittent problem, perform the following:
1. Run the advanced diagnostic test for the system board in loop mode at least 10 times.
2. If no error is detected, do not replace any FRU.
3. If an error is detected, replace the FRU. Rerun the test to verify that there are no
more errors.
Undetermined Problems 0
The diagnostic problems do not identify which adapter or device failed, which installed
devices are incorrect, whether a short circuit is suspected, or whether the system is
inoperative.
Perform the following procedures to isolate the failing FRU (do not isolate non-defective
FRU).
NOTE: NOTE:
Verify that all attached devices are supported by the computer.
NOTE: NOTE:
Verify that the power supply being used at the time of the failure is operating
correctly. (Refer to Power On Issues).
1. Remove power from the computer.
2. Visually check components for damage. If any problems are found, replace the FRU.
3. Remove or disconnect all of the following devices:
Non-Acer devices
Printer, mouse, and other external devices
Battery pack
Hard disk drive
DIMM

This section provides users with the standard operating procedures of clearing password
and BIOS recovery for the Aspire V5-551 & V5-551G. The machine provides one
Hardware Open Gap on main board for clearing password check, and one hot key for
enabling BIOS Recovery.
NOTE: NOTE:
The following procedure is only for clearing BIOS Password (Supervisor Password
and User Password).
If users set BIOS Password (Supervisor Password and/or User Password) for a security
reason, BIOS will ask the password during systems POST or when systems enter to BIOS
Setup menu. However, once it is necessary to bypass the password check, users need to
clear the password by the following steps:
1. Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Menu.
2. When the user keys in the wrong password three times, the system shows the Error
Status dialog.
12. In DOS mode, input unlockHD XXXXXXXX (Where XXXXXXXX is the backdoor key;
example here is 74821572). The exe will generate an backdoor password(example
here is 61789574).
13. On the system with the locked supervisoer password, enter the backdoor password in
the window with the backdoor key. Refer to Figure 5-5.
14. Press Enter after entering the backdoor password to enter BIOS Setup Menu.
15. Under Security, select Set Supervisor Password and input the backdoor
password again (example here is 61789574) to clear the Supervisor password.
BIOS Recovery Boot Block is a special block of BIOS. It is used to boot up the system with
minimum BIOS initialization. Users can enable this feature to restore the BIOS firmware
to a successful one once the previous BIOS flashing process failed.
The system provides a function hot key, <Fn> + <ESC>, for enable BIOS Recovery process
when system is powered on during BIOS POST. To use this function, it is strongly
recommended to have the AC adapter and Battery present. If this function is enabled,
the system will force the BIOS to enter a special BIOS block, called Boot Block.
NOTE: NOTE:
Prior to performing the recovery, prepare a Crisis USB key. The Crisis USB key is
created by executing the Crisis Disk program on another system with Windows 8
OS.
To Create a Crisis USB key, perform the following:
1. Insert in the USB flash disk.
2. Select the Fast Format option and click Start. Then click Next.
3. Click Format and then Exit to complete the operation.
4. Copy the ZQK.FD file to the USB flash disk root directory.
NOTE: NOTE:
Do not place any other *.fd files to the USB flash disk root directory.
5. Power off and insert the USB Flash Disk.
6. Ensure the AC adapter is plugged into the system.
7. Press and hold the Fn + Esc keys and then press and hold the Power button.
8. When Power LED starts blinking and the LCD panel is dark, release the Fn + Esc keys
and the Power button.
9. The system will enter crisis mode to flash the BIOS (The process takes about 3-5
minutes).
10. System will restart automatically when the Crisis Recovery Process finished.
11. Press F2 during the POST (power-on self-test) screen to enter the BIOS.
12. Ensure the System BIOS Version is the same as the crisis BIOS version.
