Understand the Root Words and their modifications

Prefix + Root + Suffix = New word

un + do = undo
un + known = unknown
confirm + ist = confirmist
non + confirm + ist = nonconfirmist
dis + establish + ment = disestablishment
Vocabulary

Letters or parts of words apperaing at the beginning of a word is called Preffix

Prefix Meaning Example

a not asymmetrical
dis, de opposite discomfort, defrost, disease
in, im, il, ir not injustice, immobile illiterate, irreplacable
re again redo, return,
un not uncomfortable, unfriendly
auto self autobiography, automatic
Vocabulary

Most of the words in English language are derivatives from root words borrowed from foriegn language
Knowing the root words will help you identify (or guess) the meaning of the word.

bio life biology, biography


chron time chronolgy, synchronize
fer carry transfer, inference
geo earth geography, geology
nom name nominate, nomenclature
tele distant telegraph, telephone, telepathy

Suffix Meaning Example

ed Past tense verb/ V3 hopped, danced


ing present participle playing, dancing
ly characteristic of quickly, brilliantly, beautifully
s, es more than one books, boxes, eats (verb)
able able to be readable, eatable
ible able to be defensible
ful full of beautiful, thoughtful, mindful
