Form: subject + past form of the verb (-ed for regular verbs)

Spelling (Past Simple affirmative of regular verbs) – PRAVILA PISANJA

 Kod pravilnih glagola – dodajemo nastavak –ed ali treba obratiti paznju na sledece:

 We add –d to verbs ending in –e. I smile – I smiled –

For verbs ending in consonant +y we drop the –y and add –ied.

I try – I tried

 For verbs ending in vowel +y we add –ed

I stay – I stayed

 For verbs ending in one stressed vowel between two consonants we double the last consonant and add –ed.

I skipped

 For verbs ending in –l we double the –l and add ed.

I travel – I travelled

Use – upotreba

We use the past simple for:

 Actions completed in the past – Za radnje koje su se dogodile u proslosti

Kate talked to Barry yesterday morning.

 Actions which happened at a specific time in the past - Za radnje koje su se dogodile u
odredjenom trenutku u proslosti

She ate her lunch at 1 o’clock. (When? At 1 o’clock.)

 Past habits – navike koje smo imali u proslosti

She always dressed in black when she was a teenager.

Time expressions (prilozi za vreme) used with the past simple:


yesterday, yesterday morning, evening, last night/week etc, two weeks/a month ago,
in 1998, etc.
Past Continuous/ Trajno proslo vreme

Form: subject + past form of the verb to be (was/were) + main verb + -ing
Oblik: Subjekat + proslo vreme pomocnog glagola to be (was/were) +
glagolska osnova na koju se dodaje nastavak - ING

Use – Upotreba vremena
We use the past continuous:

 For an actions which was in progress at a stated time in the past. We do not know when
the action started or finished.
At 6 o’clock yesterday afternoon, Paul was driving to the supermarket.

 For a past action which was in progress when another action interrupted it. We use the
past continuous for the action in progress (longer action) and the past simple for the action
which interrupted it (shorter action).
She was cooking a meal when the phone rang.

 For two or more actions which were happening at the same time in the past (simultaneous
actions).
I was cleaning the window while Jack was washing the dishes.

 To give background information in a story.


The wind was blowing and the waves were crashing against the cliff. Susan stood…

Time expressions used with the past continuous: while, when, as, all day/night/morning, all
day yesterday, etc.

 Za radnju koje su bile u toku u odredjenom trenutku u proslosti. Nije poznato kada je
radnja zapoceta ili kada se zavrsila.

 Za radnju koja je bila u proslosti (duza radnja) kada se dogodila neka druga prosla
radnja koja je prekinula (kraca radnja)
