Section S, Part II—”Truck Details and Casting Codes,” Manual of Standards and Recommended
Practices, Association of American Railroads (AAR), covers dimensional information necessary to
facilitate interchange of trucks and truck components in the rail industry. In addition, several spec-
ifications help identify the markings on truck component castings.
USER’S GUIDE
Section S-II contains basic interchange dimensions and definitions for casting marks. It consists of
the following:

ual. This preface is part of each section.

PREFACE
The Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices of the Safety and Operations Department,
Association of American Railroads, is issued by authority of the Management Committee of the Di-
vision and includes all regularly adopted specifications, standards, and recommended practices of
the Association of American Railroads.

Standard
S-300
2.1 Classification 2A, 2B, 2C, etc., is adopted for two-axle trucks. The letter designates the axle,
and the figure designates the number of axles in the truck.
2.2 Classification 3A, 3B, 3C, etc., and 4A, 4B, 4C, etc., and 6A, 6B, 6C, etc., for three-axle,
four-axle, and six-axle trucks, is to be used in the same manner.
2.3 Cars with rail loads in excess of 65,750 lb per axle cannot be operated in unrestricted inter-
change. However, they may be permitted under controlled conditions where special agreement has
been reached between participating railroads to so handle.
3.0 AXLES
Axles must meet the criteria set forth in AAR Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices,
Section G, Specification M-101.
4.0 DIMENSIONS
Height from rail to truck center plate wearing surface, empty car 25 1⁄2 in.
Distance from centerline of truck to center of side bearings 25 in.
Distance from truck center plate wearing surface to top of truck side bearing 4 1⁄16 in.
Minimum height from rail to lowest part of truck with springs solid and with maximum wear condition 2 3⁄4 in.
7.0 WHEELS
7.1 Wheels must meet the criteria set forth in AAR Manual of Standards and Recommended
Practices, Section G, Specification M-107 or Specification M-208.
7.2 Steel wheels of at least 36-in. diameter shall be used on cars having axle loads of 55,000 lb to
65,750 lb, inclusive.

8.0 JOURNAL BEARINGS
8.1 Plain journal bearings must meet the criteria set forth in MSRP Section H, Specification
M-501.
8.2 Journal roller bearings must meet the criteria set forth in MSRP Section H, Specification
M-934.
9.0 JOURNAL BEARING WEDGE
Journal bearing wedge must meet the criteria set forth in MSRP Section H, Specification M-132.
10.0 ROLLER BEARING PEDESTAL ADAPTER
Journal roller bearing adapters must meet the criteria set forth in MSRP Section H, Specification
M-924.
11.0 JOURNAL BOX LIDS AND SEALS
Plain journal box lids and seals must meet the criteria set forth in MSRP Section H, Specification
M-920.
12.0 BOLSTER
Truck bolster must be an approved type meeting the criteria set forth in MSRP Section S, Specifi-
cation M-202, with tolerances conforming to Standard S-316 and having markings as shown in
Standard S-312.
13.0 SIDE FRAME
Truck side frame must be an approved type meeting the requirements set forth in MSRP Section
S, Specification M-203 with tolerances conforming to Standard S-317 and markings as shown in
Standard S-314. Pedestal is to conform to Standard S-325.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
The AAR code for designating codable design features for side frames and truck bolsters having
built-in snubbing devices and single-shoe brakes is published for simplification and standardiza-
tion purposes. Standard S-392 contains the AAR code number system. Standard S-393 contains a
tabulation of manufacturers’ codable designs that were furnished without AAR code numbers
prior to 1978 (when standardized code numbers were not required to be cast on side frames and
bolsters). Appropriate code numbers are shown.
One of the greatest losses to the railroad industry is the unnecessary delay in returning to service
foreign cars awaiting receipt of side frames and truck bolsters from owner roads. The AAR code for
designating codable design features for side frames and bolsters having built-in snubbing devices
and single-shoe brakes allows castings to be readily identified for interchangeability, and proper
substitutions can be made for rapid return of equipment to service.
Simplification of design reduces inventories and promotes greater interchangeability. Codable bol-
sters have been standardized for the dimension from spring seat to center plate for each truck
design of the same nominal capacity and spring travel. The light car coupler heights will vary as a
result of differences in light car weights but will not exceed AAR limits. All cars, when loaded to
maximum rail load, will meet AAR requirements for coupler heights. Standardization of the
dimension from spring seat to center plate simplifies the problem of providing proper bolsters
when cars in interchange service require bolster replacement.
Standards S-312 and S-314 have been established as standard marking diagrams for side frames
and bolsters. These diagrams show standard locations for manufacturers’ markings and AAR code
numbers.
Standard S-366 provides design dimension information for unit brake beam guide brackets.
