Maths Problems and Investigations

Maths Problems and Investigations – Lower Secondary is designed to support

students who need practice to build their skills and strategies. The engaging
problem-solving activities take students through a deliberate process of reading
the problem, identifying relevant information, selecting appropriate strategies,
solving the problem and checking the reasonableness of their solutions.
Differentiated activities to build students’ skills and strategies
Most pages provide problems at a Proficient level and an Advanced level along
with an Investigation. With the proficient problems, students are generally solving Lower Secondary
one-step problems in which they need to use one mathematical operation and
the language indicates the required operation. The advanced problems involve
more sophisticated language and may involve more than one operation in order to
calculate the answer.
The investigations draw students in to address real-life situations. To successfully
solve the investigations, they must think and work mathematically, as well as use
their knowledge of a range of mental and written strategies and demonstrate their
overall competence in mathematics.

About the author: Greg has had an extensive and varied career as an educator. He began as a
primary school teacher, teaching at a number of schools, including a period
as a school principal. While teaching, Greg perceived a need for meaningful,
pupil-friendly maths resources that teachers could use to enhance their teaching
programs. He embarked on a career as an author, writing over 200 published books
that have been market leaders for over 20 years. He has a special interest in problem
solving and investigative mathematics. Greg has also enjoyed sharing his knowledge
and enthusiasm for education with aspiring teachers, as a university tutor. In order to
keep his mind fresh and thoughts clear, Greg starts each day with a swim or a surf.

Introduction
Maths Problems and Investigations – Lower Secondary is designed to support students who need
practice to build their skills and strategies. The engaging problem-solving activities take students
through a deliberate process whereby students:
• read the problem
• identify relevant information
• select appropriate strategies
• solve the problem
• check the reasonableness of their solutions.

Most pages provide problems at a Proficient level and an Advanced level along with an
Investigation. With the proficient problems, students are generally solving one-step problems in
which they need to use one mathematical operation and the language indicates the required
operation. The advanced problems involve more sophisticated language and may involve more
than one operation in order to calculate the answer.

The investigations draw students in to address real-life situations. To successfully solve the
investigations, they must demonstrate:
• ability to think and work mathematically
• knowledge of a range of mental and written strategies
• overall competence in mathematics.

Students as young learners need to both be shown and experience a variety of mental strategies,
as well as traditional written strategies. Such strategies include:
• Estimation – if the solution differs from the initial estimate, the answer might need to be
checked or an alternative strategy employed.
• Written – problems involving large numbers and those that require two or three steps in order
to reach a solution are best solved using pen and paper strategies. Answers can be checked
and reworked if necessary.
• Calculator – competent use of a calculator demonstrates mathematical competence and
forms a legitimate problem-solving strategy.
