Summary and Introduction

This week’s topic is about coal-fired power plant which is a thermal power plant that uses
coal as its fuel source to produce electricity. The fossils of ancient plants and animals that were
crushed and buried for millions of years eventually became coal. Steam is produced by burning
coal, which releases energy in the form of heat. In order to generate electricity, the steam is then
utilized to turn a turbine. For more than a century, coal-fired power stations have been a key
source of energy generation for several nations across the world. These power plants, which
generate electricity by burning coal, have played a significant role in the energy mix of many
nations. While coal-fired power plants have been crucial to the generation of electricity, there
also its advantage and disadvantage, its uses, and the similarities and differences in each power
plant presented in the videos.

Coal-Fired Power Plant Tour

This first video presented the whole coal-fired power plant, explaining each part and what
it does. As this power plants burn coal to produce steam, which is used to turn turbines and
generate electricity. The video explains that the process of generating electricity from coal
contains several steps, including coal transportation, coal storage, coal preparation, and
combustion. It first shows a room containing their equipment and then shows a view of many
tubes and pipes around the facility. As they show their facility around, they also explain what
part and functions of the equipment shown.
They also explain the process of how electricity is generated from burning coals. The
video gives a basic explanation of how coal-fired power stations operate and the environmental
issues they raise. They went around the facility to showcase several machines and provided
necessary information regarding how the coal is being transported and turned into electricity.
Much equipment is also present in the video such as boilers, pipes, storages, and computers that
is connected to one another. While coal-fired power plants have contributed significantly to the
production of energy for many years, they have also had a considerable negative impact on the
environment in terms of climate change and other issues.

Figure 1: Outside of the Power Plant

Inside a coal-fired power plant (IPP plant in Delta, Utah)

This video talks about the inside of the Intermountain Power Plant (IPP) in Delta, Utah, a
coal-fired power plant that generates electricity for customers across six western states. It
describes the process of generating and transmitting 1,900 MW of power. It was discussed by
Ryan Jackson which tackles the supplies and equipment used in the fossil fuel power station.
Photos that were provided show the inside and outside of the power plant. Outside is where the
building is, as well as the chimney and the cooling towers. Inside shows a conveyer, the
equipment that is used, lights, and others.
As he shows the photos with the equipment, he also explains what they do and how they
work to provide information to the listeners. He also provides a tour of the various components
of the power plant, including the massive turbines, generators, control rooms, and warning signs
that are posted along the power plant. He elaborated on the number of watts needed by the
equipment and specified its uses as well as what is located and being done by the machines.
Ryan Jackson provided clear instructions and information regarding the power plant.

Alabama Power's Plant Miller How Electricity Is Generated 3D Animated Tour

This video is about the Alabama Power Plant called Plant Miller, which is in Quinton,
Alabama. It is one of the company's largest coal-fired power plants. The plant has a generating
capacity of 2,640 megawatts, enough to power over 1 million homes. The plant provides 20% of
Alabama Power company’s generating capacity and is the largest generating facility in the state
with a capacity of over 2.9 million kilowatts, or 2900 megawatts of electricity. The video starts
with a 3D animated representation of coal being delivered and stacked.
The process begins with the pulverization of coal into a fine powder, which is then
burned to heat water and produce steam. It provides a detailed look at the various components of
the power plant, including the water system, boilers, turbines, and generators. Steam is used to
turn turbines, which in turn generate electricity. Coal is burned to heat water and produce steam.
The steam is then directed onto turbine blades, which causes the turbine to spin. The spinning
turbine is connected to a shaft, which is connected to a generator. Turbines and generators work
together in a coal-fired power plant to convert the energy from coal into electricity that can be
used to power homes and businesses. A circulating cooling system is a type of cooling system
used in coal-fired power plants to cool the water that is used in the power generation process.
Plant Miller uses a closed loop that allows water to be reused over and over for the process of
cooling. Following the cooling process is the bottom ash removal. It is the solid material that is
left over after coal is burned. This material falls to the bottom of the boiler and is collected.
While the bottom ash goes to the bottom, the hot flue gas containing finer particles of fly ash

naturally flows up to the top of the boiler. It then continues the process and later goes to be
transmitted and distributed across the country using towers and transmission lines. The video
provides an informative and detailed look at the process of electricity generation at the Plant
Miller power plant.

MidAmerican Energy Coal-Fueled Power Plant Virtual Tour

This video introduces the MidAmerican energy coal fueled power plant which also
converts energy within the coal into electricity. The introduction starts with the history of coal
that was formed millions of years ago and continues with the process of collecting coal. There
are two processes of collecting coal from the ground which is the surface mining, which means
mining coal that is close to the surface, and underground mining. It is also called deep mining
which is mining coal that is several hundred feet below the earth’s surface. A description of the
power plant's main parts, such as the boiler, turbine, and generator is also tackled. It is also
explained over how coal is brought to the facility and burnt to create steam. The turbine is then
propelled by steam, which powers the generator to generate energy.
The process involves coal being transported into boilers and water being reheated over
and over again to be reused. An electrical generator is a part of turbines that continues to rotate
that turns electromagnets within a series of wire coils to produce electricity. The water used to be
reused at a coal fueled power plant is called feedwater. Coal-fired power plants are also known
to be sources of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. This requires power plant to use

pollution control equipment such as scrubbers, electrostatic precipitators, and baghouses to
reduce emissions as shown in the video.

Implications of a Coal Fired Power Plant in the Philippines

The video about the implications of a coal fired power plant in the Philippines is
presented by Rudolph Santarromana that mainly talks about the environmental impacts of the
plant. Details such as the amount of coals and water being used and the electricity that is
produced are discussed to provide a glimpse of what the power plant does. With the details in
mind, a rough estimate of the emissions were presented that may cause several environmental
problems such as climate change and acid rains. With the implication of the emissions of carbon
dioxide, nitric oxide, and sulfur dioxide this can also cause human health dangers such as
diseases and infections. Transport of emission means that the possible harmful chemicals that are
present within the power plant may travel through various methods making them secondary
pollutants. This can make water and air become polluted with various harmful chemicals making
aquatic and aerial life in danger.
Coal stocks and ash are results of burning coal in a power plant. Coal stocks refer to the
amount of coal that a power plant has on hand and ready to be burned and coal ash is the residue
left over after coal is burned in a power plant. This also talks about how ash affects the life
around it. A scenario regarding coal ash is shown in the video which is the Kingston Fossil plant
coal ash slurry spill. Coral bleaching and degrading nature is also mentioned as a cause of hot

effluent water from a power plant. The video is an informative video that highlights the potential
environmental and social impacts of coal-fired power plants.
