Conquest of Makkah 8AH

The conquest of Makkah was the greatest event in the life of the prophet pbuh. It took place in 8
AH. According to the terms of the Treaty of Hudaibiyah there was to be no war for 10
years. Also, the both parties were given the option to form alliance with any tribe. The muslims
allied with Banu khuza'a and the quraysh with Banu bakr. In 8 AH Banu Bakr violated this treaty
and attacked Banu Khuza'a. Banu Khuza'a entered the Holy sanctuary but here too they were
not spared. The Quraysh also helped Banu Bakr in this.

The Banu Khuza'a now went to prophet pbuh for justice. The prophet sent 3 options to quraysh
to accept any one. Either they had to pay blood money, or they had to terminate alliance with
Banu Bakr or they had to consider the treaty of Hudaibiyah as null and void. The Quraysh
accepted the third option. However they soon realized their mistake and sent Abu Sufyan for the
renewal of the truce. He met many influential people of Madinah including the prophet himself
but no one was prepared to listen to him. Thus he returned back to Makkah.

Now the prophet prepared an army of 10000 secretly. This army started its march on 10
Ramadan 8 AH. The Prophet left Abu Ruhm Al Ghifari in charge of Madinah. When they
reached Juhfa , Hazrat Abbas who had accepted Islam joined them too. Before entering
Makkah the prophet encamped at Marr uz Zahran. He ordered the Muslims to light their
campfires which amounted to 10000.

Meanwhile Abu Sufyan went to survey the Muslims army. He met Abbas who advised him to
accept Islam. Abu Sufyan went to the Prophet and so he accepted Islam. The Prophet also
gave him a privilege saying, He who takes refuge in Abu Sufyan's house is safe, whoever
confines himself to his house, the inmates shall be in safety and he who enters the Sacred
Mosque is safe.

On 17 Ramadan the prophet left for Makkah. The army was divided into 4 battalions under
Khalid,Zubair,Abu Ubaidah bin jarrah and hazrat Ali.It was decided that these battalions would
meet at the Saffa Hill.Only the battalion of Khalid had to face resistance. They were attacked by
a force under Ikrimah and Sohail bin Amr.12 pagans and 2 muslims were killed. Finally all the
battalions reached Saffa Hill.

Then the prophet pbuh performed Tawaf. After this he took the key of Kaaba from uthman bin
talha and then entered the Kaaba. There were 360 idols inside and the prophet demolished all of
these while reciting, And say:Truth has arrived and Batil has vanished. Surely Batil is bound to
vanish.

After this Bilal called Adhan from the roof and zuhr prayer was offered. After this the Prophet
said to the quraysh, O people of Quraysh! Surely Allah has abolished from you all pride of the
pre Islamic era and all pride in your ancestry. He further added,O people of quraysh! What do
you think of the treatment I am about to accord you? They replied, O noble brother and son of
noble brother! We expect nothing but goodness from you. Thus the prophet replied, I speak to
you the same words as Yusuf spoke to his brothers. He said:No reproach on you this day. Go
your way for you are freed ones.May Allah forgive you.

However, shedding blood of nine of the worst criminals was declared lawful. Some of them like
Abdul Uzza bin khatal were killed. Abdullah bin Abu Sarah who had left Islam was also killed. On
the other hand Ikrimah bin Abu Jahl and Wahshi accepted Islam and were forgiven. Safwan bin
Umayyah who had tried to assassinate prophet pbuh during tawaf was forgiven after he
accepted Islam. After this event Ansar feared that the prophet may stay in makkah. But the
prophet pbuh dismissed their fears and promised to stay in madinah.

2000 people converted to Islam and the Quran says, When comes the Help of Allah and victory,
and you do see the people enter Allah's religion in crowds. The Prophet stayed in Makkah for 15
and according to some 20 days.

Conclusion:
-spread of Islam;tribes had delayed their conversion till conquest.
-enemies became allies
-strengthened political power of prophet pbuh.
