Anime Discourse Community

Tv Series

The Anime Discourse Community is a community I have been in since a young

age. I was first introduced to it by my father when I was roughly

nine years old. I remember sitting on the floor while my dad sat

on the couch and we were watching a popular anime tv series

called Dragon Ball. As the years pass I’ve grown to enjoy

watching anime, finding myself to go deeper within the

community. This community allows you to express yourself in

creative ways, whether that be discussion forums, cosplay, art,

music, voice acting, or animation. These are all communities that make up the Anime

Discourse Community as a whole. The best part of the community is the tv series within

it. Each series holds some sort of meaning behind it, a story, a perspective on life,

personal relationships, and growth. It adds a way for viewers to express their creativity,

allowing them to find deeper meanings within the series and life.
Within the TV series community, there exists a set of norms and values that the

majority upholds. Specifically, in discussion forums there are community guidelines that

people must follow. This is to ensure a safe place for people to have open discussions.

A primary rule adhered to by the anime TV series community is the use of spoiler

warnings as it is important to include warnings in posts and discussions or a tag to

prevent spoiling the experience for those who have yet to watch the TV series. The

animes that leave people in the most awe are usually the ones that get spoiled.

AOT Sasha eating Potato

One of the biggest anime series that I can refer to that have left many in awe is

AOT which is an acronym for Attack on Titan. This series has been popular since the

moment it came out in 2013. Attack on Titan managed to grab the attention of many

different people, all with unique ideals and thought processes. As a community we focus

a lot on plot, characters, world building, animation and themes. AOT gives the viewers

all of those concepts that we search for. This provokes discussions across the globe.

The series explores moral dilemmas, human nature and social structures. This leads to
heavy debates about the meaning and messages that this series holds, AOT also

includes heavy emotional depths which brings the viewers in.

In the anime TV community, there is an ongoing debate about whether sub or

dub is superior. Sub is a category of anime media that features subtitles with the

original language audio, which is often considered better than dub, which refers to an

english voiced-over audio for anime media. In the case of Attack on Titan, many argue

that the dub surpasses the sub due to its chilling voice acting.
Given the fact that the anime tv series community focuses on those aspects of a

show, some people have different opinions. You can see a wide range of opinions in My

Hero Academia, a shounen anime TV series that originated

from a manga (comics/graphic novels originating from Japan).

Shounen is a type of genre that is targeted at young boys, it

includes a lot of action, adventure, and friendship. There is no

limitation on who can watch shounen anime series. A lot of people say My Hero

Academia is overrated, which is a term used to describe when a series is said to be

better when it really isn’t. However, this series is also liked by many. An underrated

series like Bocchi the Rock! For example, it is a really good series that doesn’t get

enough attention. Thus, making the series underrated. What makes a series

underrated or overrated is purely based on the individual's preference and taste as

There are many genres within the anime TV series community.

A popular genre within the community is

Isekai’s. Isekai is a sub-genre within the anime tv

series which is where the main character is transported

into a different world. A popular series is KonoSuba!!

Where the main character is transported into a fantasy

world that consists of MMORPG elements. Isekais are

liked by a few people within the community, as they

contain a blend of different genres that appeals to

many people.
One Piece, another popular anime series, has over 1,000 episodes. This has

caused some contention within the community due to disputes about the significant

portion of filler episodes that make the series so long. These are episodes that don’t

relate to the original plot or storyline. The purpose they serve is to make the series

longer so the original source of the tv series (the manga) can progress further during

production. Many viewers enjoy filler episodes, while others don’t. Overall, it creates a

connection between people with differing viewpoints, allowing them to discuss their

perspectives on the topic of filler episodes.

Within the TV series community, there exists a set of norms and values that the

The person who I will be interviewing within the Anime Discourse Community is

Colin Ahlen, a great friend and coworker of mine. I chose Colin because he has a lot of

opinions and experience within the community, especially with tv series. Colin has a

deep love for Japanese culture and it shows through with his sense of clothes style and

personality. The first question I asked was how he got into the community as a whole,

he said, “At first at my friend’s house” and followed by saying that “I always really liked

Japan.” Colin has been a part of the anime community since he was ten, “I got really

serious however when Attack on Titan came out.” As explained above, Attack on Titan

is a popular anime that is well known throughout the entire anime TV series community.

I continued the interview by asking Colin what his favorite anime tv series were.

This is a tricky question to answer for the majority of fans as there are many great

series. Colin broke it up into separate genres. “With fantasy and action I would say

Attack on Titan, Slice of life…hmm … or like an Isekai instead… I would say Re: Zero,

Romance I would say, My Dress Up Darling. If we are talking about history I would say

Bakemonogatari or Samurai Champloo.” Some of the anime tv series he included in his

answer are well known in the anime, however, some like Samurai Champloo and

Bakemonogatari are less known, being considered underrated anime tv series.

The genre is important but what makes people like a series so much for it to be

considered good or a favorite? I asked Colin what aspect of an anime series he tends to

focus on the most. “I like to focus more on storytelling and music production. Of course

everything from character, plot, to the animation plays a part on if the series will be

good. But, I believe the story that is told is most important to me.” I agree with this

because I feel like a series can have bad animation but the story is what truly captures

me. I lastly asked Colin what series he recommends and he says that he really

recommends “Bocchi the Rock, One Piece, Death Note, or My dress up Darling.”

Despite the differing opinions of individuals within the community with regards to

specific shows, there exist individuals whose passion for anime as a whole goes above

and beyond the usual; anime fan’s appreciation. These individuals are called Otakus,

which just means someone who is very passionate about anime as a whole. Some

people are called weeaboos which is more of a derogatory term that is said against

anime lovers in western traditions who are obsessed with japanese culture.

Overall, the anime tv series community is important to many individuals as it

provides a place for people to express themselves through discussions and build
connections with others who share a passion for Japanese culture. TV Series make up

most of the anime media and that is why I decided to talk about the anime tv media

instead of the anime community as a whole. This community will forever have a place in

my heart as it taught me how to be more creative and expressive in my hobbies and

interests.
