QUESTION:
What is Hydroponics gardening?
ANSWER:
Hydroponics is a way to skip the soil, sub in a different material to
support the roots of the plant, and grow crops directly in nutrient-
rich water.
PLANTS THAT CAN BE USED IN HYDROPONICS
Lettuce, Spinach, Bell Peppers, pechay.

My Chosen Plant
Loose Leaf/Romaine Lettuce and Snow Cabbage
On Sept 1, 2022, the project was given to us. We choose Lettuce
and Snow Cabbage. Based on our research, Lettuce has been
proven to easily grow in this type of gardening. We’ve noticed that
most of hydroponics sellers are selling lettuce that we assume
that it is easy to grow. We also chose these two plants because of
the availability of the seed and for their affordability.
DAY 2
Materials

Soil Paper Cups Seed Seed Tray

Experimentation

Based on our research Coco peat is the best

option for a seeding or planting these seeds. In contrary, My
Plantita said that it is best if the we mix coco peat with loam soil.
So, we used around 20% of coco peat and 80% of loam soil.

I still don’t have the seeding tray so I’ve used

paper cups instead. I just poked holes into it so that the water can
pass through.
Our seed is the Snow Cabbage (the Blue one) and
the mixture of Romaine and Loose-Leaf Lettuce.

Day 2
Experimentation

I just directly planted it in the

paper cup. As you can see there are label on each cup referring
to which plant were planted in it. I’ve put it in a place where there
is a direct sunlight but no direct rain access. You can see me
holding the cup for documentation.
After 3 days

After 3 days(oct. 5, 2022), you can see a slight sprouting.

After 5 days

After 5 days(Oct. 10, 2022), I’ve borrowed my lolo’s seedling

tray/seed tray, I’ve transferred it in the seed tray.
After 2 weeks

After 2 weeks(Oct. 24, 2022), I’ve transferred it in a plastic cup to

be able to put it in a hydroponic tube that we used instead of an
styrofoam one. I’ve noticed that the lettuce(loose-leaf) are the first
ones to show bigger leaves. As you can see here, the snow
cabbage has smaller leaves. I have to loosen the soil from the
seed tray to be able to separate each seedling.

After 2 weeks and 4 days.

My plants died. Mostly snow cabbage but luckyly there are still
few lettuce that have survived mostly romaine. The main reason
that they have died was because of moisture stress due to the
storm that they have faced. You see, a typhoon(Paeng) landed on
Oct. 26 and destroyed most of my crops.
After 1 month

After a month(Nov. 5, 2022),You could see the loose-leaf

lettuce has bigger leaves than the romaine on the right. I’ve also
noticed that its growth rate has slowed.

This is also the time that I started putting nutrients to its

water. I put 5ml of both nutsol A and B for every 1 cup. As said in
the label, Nutsol A and B has the specific soil nutrients such as
nitrogen and potassium. Soil nutrients are important for healthy
plant growth. The macronutrients (nitrogen, potassium and
phosphorus) are required in large quantities and are therefore
managed and replaced as fertilizer on a crop-by-crop basis.
After 2 months

After 2 months(Dec. 5,2022), As you can see that the

Romaine Lettuce can be harvest. I slowly removed the plant from
the cup and the remaining soil and washed it thoroughly. I even
cut the roots. Ready for selling.

Conclusion
I’ve realized how hard farming is but I’ve enjoyed it. It would
take a lot of effort, time, patience and even consistency. Being
introduced to a new way of gardening makes it as an eye-opener
for me because gardening is hard but hydroponics is harder
because there are several things that we are not familiar about.
Planting these two types of plants made me realized that plants
are like humans, WE GROW DIFFERENTLY.
