Module 7– Use appropriate reading style
(scanning, skimming, speed reading,
intensive reading, etc.) for one’s purpose

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you master using appropriate reading style (scanning, skimming, speed
reading, intensive reading, etc.) for one’s purpose. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in
which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you
are now using.

The module mainly focuses on:

 Use of Various Reading Styles

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of the different reading styles (scanning,
skimming, speed reading, intensive reading, etc.);
2. Identify the reading style required in different reading situations;
3. Differentiate the reading styles from one another; and
4. Execute a simple reading activity applying the different reading styles
on passages

5
1 Use of Various Reading Styles
This lesson was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you master the use of word classification EN7RC-I-a-7, EN7SS-I-a-1.5.2,
EN7SS-I-b-1.5.1, EN7RC-I-c-7.1, and EN7RC-I-d-7.1.

Students! Welcome to the world of reading

styles which requires knowledge and skills to
bring the words on printed pages to life!
However, your journey will not be complete if
you won’t answer the Pre-Assessment below.

What I Know

Directions: Read carefully the 10 questions below about various reading

styles. Choose the letter of the correct answer and write it on a ¼ sheet of

Steps for Skimming

 Read the title

 Read the introduction.
 Read the first line of each paragraph.
 Look for important information such as names, dates and
unusual words.
 Notice any pictures, charts, or graphs.
 Notice any italicized or boldface words or phrases.
 Read headings and subheading.
 Read the conclusion or summary
 Do not read every word.

Examples:

 The Newspaper – to quickly get the general news of the day

 Magazines – to quickly discover which articles you would
like to read in more detail

 Business and Travel Brochures – to quickly get informed

Steps for Scanning

 State the specific information you are looking for.

 Try to anticipate how the answer will appear and what
clues you might use to help you locate the answer. For
example, if you were looking for a certain date, you
would quickly read the paragraph looking only for
numbers.
 Use headings and any other aids that will help you
identify which sections might contain the information
you are looking for.
 Selectively read and skip through sections of the
passage.

What’s More

Activity 1
Directions: Skim and scan the short story below to provide information
needed to answer the questions that follow. Write the letter of your choice on
your answer sheet.

Romulus and Remus

The early history of the city of Rome involves Romulus and Remus,
two orphan boys who, legend says, were raised by a she-wolf. The boys'
mother had been murdered by an evil king and the two babies tossed into
the river Tiber. When the wolf found them they had washed up on the shore.
She perhaps took pity on the crying of the babies and, gently picking them
up in her teeth, she carried them back to her cave and fed them on her milk.
The boys grew bigger and stronger and, eventually, were found by a
herdsman who took them home. He and his wife raised the boys like their
own children. When they reached manhood they sought revenge on the king
who had killed their mother and driven them from their home.
They decided to build a city. Unfortunately, they argued over the
appropriate site and Romulus killed his brother Remus. Romulus ruled this
city -- called Roma -- for thirty-seven years.
The city of Rome is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the
world. If you travel there you can see a statue of the two baby boys feeding

Activity 3
Directions: Intensively read the essay below then answer the questions that
follow. Write the letter of your choice on your answer sheet.

Causes of Floods

Floods are second only to fire as the most common of all natural
disasters. They occur almost everywhere in the world, resulting in
widespread damage and even death. Consequently, scientists have long tried
to perfect their ability to predict floods.
So far, the best that scientists can do is to recognize the potential for
flooding in certain conditions. There are a number of conditions, from deep
snow on the ground to human error, that cause flooding.
When deep snow melts it creates a large amount of water. Although
deep snow alone rarely causes floods, when it occurs together with heavy
rain and sudden warmer weather it can lead to serious flooding. If there is a
fast snow melt on top of frozen or very wet ground, flooding is more likely to
occur than when the ground is not frozen. Frozen ground or ground that is
very wet and already saturated with water cannot absorb the additional
water created by the melting snow. Melting snow also contributes to high
water levels in rivers and streams. Whenever rivers are already at their full
capacity of water, heavy rains will result in the rivers overflowing and
flooding the surrounding land.
Rivers that are covered in ice can also lead to flooding. When ice
begins to melt, the surface of the ice cracks and breaks into large pieces.
These pieces of ice move and float down the river. They can form a dam in
the river, causing the water behind the dam to rise and flood the land
upstream. If the dam breaks suddenly, then the large amount of water held
behind the dam can flood the areas downstream too.
Broken ice dams are not the only dam problems that can cause
flooding. When a large human-made dam breaks or fails to hold the water
collected behind it, the results can be devastating. Dams contain such huge
amounts of water behind them that when sudden breaks occur, the
destructive force of the water is like a great tidal wave. Unleashed dam
waters can travel tens of kilometers, cover the ground in meters of mud and
debris, and drown and crush everything and creature in their path.
Although scientists cannot always predict exactly when floods will
occur, they do know a great deal about when floods are likely, or probably,
going to occur. Deep snow, ice-covered rivers, and weak dams are all strong
conditions for potential flooding. Hopefully, this knowledge of why floods
happen can help us reduce the damage they cause.

What I Can Do

Directions: Read the following passages and answer the questions that
follow. Refer to the text to check your answers when appropriate. (5
minutes)

You know that you're doing something big when your company name
becomes a verb. Ask Xerox. In 1959 they created the first plain paper copy
machine. It was one of the most successful products ever.
The company name Xerox grew into a verb that means "to copy," as in
"Bob, can you Xerox this for me?" Around 50 years later, the same thing
happened to Google. Their company name grew into a verb that means "to
do an internet search." Now everyone and their grandma knows what it
means to Google it.

19
Unlike Xerox, Google wasn't the first company to invent their product,
not by a long shot. Lycos released their search engine in 1993. Yahoo! came
out in 1994. AltaVista began serving results in 1995. Google did not come
out until years later, in 1998. Though a few years difference may not seem
like much, this is a major head start in the fast moving world of tech. So
how did Google do it? How did they overtake their competitors who had such
huge leads in time and money? Maybe one good idea made all the difference.
There are millions and millions of sites on the internet. How does a
search engine know which ones are relevant to your search? This is a
question that great minds have been working on for decades. To understand
how Google changed the game, you need to know how search engines
worked in 1998. Back then most websites looked at the words in your query.
They counted how many times those words appeared on each page. Then
they might return pages where the words in your query appeared the most.
This system did not work well and people often had to click through pages
and pages of results to find what they wanted.

Additional Activities

Get skimming!
A. Directions: Give yourself 60 seconds to skim through the ‘Size matters’
paragraph below. When you are finished, cover the paragraph up before
moving onto the questions.

Size matters
Here’s something to think about the next time you go shopping. Have
you ever noticed how many trolleys are available when you go to the
supermarket? In my experience, it seems like hundreds! But how about the
number of hand baskets? Invariably I struggle to find even one, especially
when I only need a few items. Why might this be the case? Well it seems to
be a tactic used to encourage us to buy more. If you are walking around
with an empty trolley, you are more tempted to fill it, so if you a planning on
only doing a quick shop, always try to find a basket. It will be lighter, easier
to use and is sure to save you money!

common theory is that the good wish wards off bad luck. It was once

5. What is the main source of energy?

Passage: Energy (power) is used to supply electricity and fuel to run
factories, light homes and offices, and to move cars, trucks and boats. After
the 1773 “energy crisis” and the world economic slump, people have become
more aware of the importance of their power and fuel supplies. The
country’s energy needs are supplied by (1) oil, (2) hydroelectric power, (3)
bagasse (sugarcane wastes), (4) geothermal energy, (5) coal, and (6) new
source of energy. Like solar power, biogas, agro-forestry wastes, natural gas,
alcogas and wood. Oil is the main source of energy for transportation,
factories and homes. The country still has to import oil from other countries,
but it has intensified the development of local oil fields and refineries. From
December 27, 1979, it has begun to produce oil from the Nido, Moatinlic,
Cadlao and Pandan oilfields in Palawan.
