II. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, at least 80% of the students should be able to:
define a circle;
determine the standard form of equation of a circle;
graph a circle in a rectangular coordinate system;
recognize the importance of circle into real-life situation.
Parts of a circle:
Radius – A line segment connecting the centre of a circle to any point on the circle itself.
Center – It is the midpoint of a circle.
Chord – A line segment whose endpoints lie on the circle.
Diameter – A line segment having both the endpoints on the circle and is the largest chord
of the circle.
Tangent line – A coplanar straight line touching the circle at a single point.
Secant line – A straight line cutting the circle at two points. It is also called an extended chord.
𝑨𝒙𝟐 + A𝒚𝟐 + 𝑪𝒙 + 𝑫𝒚 + 𝑬 = 𝟎
Example:
Given the following equation of a circle. Find the center, radius and graph of it.
1) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 16
𝑐: (0,0)
√𝑟2 = √16
𝑟=4
2) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 49
𝑐: (0,0)
√𝑟2 = √49
𝑟=7
3) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 25
𝑐: (0,0)
√𝑟2 = √25
𝑟=5
4. 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 + 10𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 4 = 0
5. 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 + 6𝑥 − 8𝑦 + 9 = 0
6. 𝑥2 + 2𝑦2 − 16𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 20 = 0
IV. Abstraction/Activity
A. Determine the center and radius of each of the following equation. Graph each of
the following (3 pts each) Show your solution. NO SOLUTION NO POINTS
1) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 36 6) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 − 2𝑥 − 6𝑦 + 12 = 0
2) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 64 7) 2𝑥2 + 2𝑦2 + 28𝑥 − 8𝑦 + 4 = 0
3) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 81 8) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 + 6𝑥 + 12𝑦 + 9 = 0
4) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 100 9) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 + 4𝑥 − 4𝑦 − 1 = 0
5) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 144 10) 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 + 4𝑥 − 10𝑦 + 13 = 0
B. Transform the standard equation of a circle to general form and vice versa. Identify its radius and
graph the circle.
V. Performance Tasks

in a short bond paper.
