LABORATORY WORK №11

Theme: Creation of video files with use of programs: HyperCam, Adobe

Premiere Pro, Windows Movie Maker, etc.
Purpose: Use the features of the programs HyperCam, Adobe Premiere
Pro, Windows Movie Maker for creating videos.
Plan practical work:
1. HyperCam
2. Adobe Premiere Pro
3. Windows Movie Maker

1. HyperCam
HyperCam is a screencast program created and created by Hyperionics
and Solveig Multimedia. It captures the action from the Microsoft Windows
screen and saves it in an AVI video file (alternating audio video) or WMV
(Windows Media Video) or ASF (Advanced Systems Format). HyperCam will
also record all sound, and sound from the system microphone can also be
recorded.
HyperCam is primarily designed to create software presentations, tutorials,
demos, passes and other various tasks that the user wants to demonstrate. In the
latest versions, an overlay video is also recorded and you can re-record movies
and video clips (for example, record video that is played in Windows Media
Player, RealVideo, QuickTime, etc.). Starting with version 3.0, HyperCam also
includes a built-in editor for trimming and merging captured files AVI, WMV,
ASF.
The main advantage of the program when compared with other similar
applications is in its simplicity. Everything is very comprehensible and clear
even for inexperienced users. You need to remember only three or four hotkeys
for video creation, the program will do the rest by itself and it does so with the
greatest quality.
HyperCam 3 has got a wide range of functions to create and produce video
presentations for various purposes. With the program you can make video
tutorials, presentations, demo videos, record your games or simply anything else
that is shown on your screen.
Interface
The programs interface is very intuitive and extremely easy to use. Unlike other
programs it is not overcrowded with lots of buttons and tabs. It only includes
minimal buttons but offers maximal functionality. Even a very inexperienced
user will become accustomed to it in seconds.
There are two main tabs on the top of the interface- Record (which
contains three capturing modes- Region, Fullscreen and Window)
and Options (where you can customize video, audio, interface and some extra
settings of the program).
A little below you can see three functional buttons: the first is designed in
the form of a video camera (using it you can enable or disable video recording),
the second red round button called Record is used to begin video capture and the
last one for turning off or on the voice.
At the bottom of HyperCam 3 are situated two sections: Recent Records (where
you can view all the video files captured by the program, edit them with the help
of a built-in video editor or share to YouTube, Vizify, Vimeo and DropBox)
and Screen Notes (for adding text notes to the video files).

Main Features of the program.

Video Capture
Of course, video capture of the computer screen is the main purpose of
HyperCam 3. The program offers three different capturing modes –
Region, Fullscreen and Window. Each of them has its own specific features and
goals.

If you want to capture the entire computer screen you must

use Fullscreen mode. The program captures every detail and action occurring on
the screen in this mode. This mode is very useful when you wish to record the
entire screen and display all the actions which take place on it.
In Region Mode the program captures only an area determined by the
user. You can select a specific place on the computer screen using the mouse
both manually (by typing the desired width and height) and automatically
(simply by outlining the desired area with the mouse). The advantage of this
mode lies in it that it allows you to determine any area of the screen and capture
only it.
It is often necessary to capture some individual and particular window and
not a whole computer screen, for instance, the interface and functionality of any
program, YouTube video or Skype session. You can do that easily with
the Window capturing mode of HyperCam 3. After choosing it, the Select
Window button appears where it lists all running and active applications. Simply
select one of them from the drop-down menu, click on the Record button and
start capturing.
The program allows you to disable video recording temporarily and use
only audio recording with the help of any audio device installed on your system
(microphone, system audio, and so on), or vice versa, disable audio and use only
video recording.
Video Sharing
You have the possibility to share the captured videos immediately after
creation or editing to such social media and file uploading sites as YouTube,
Vizify, Vimeo and DropBox. You do not need to open them in the browser; you
can do that directly in the program interface by selecting the desired site from
the drop menu and entering your user name and password.
Video Options
The program uses the following encoders and codecs- uncompressed video,
Cinepac codec by Radius, and so on (see the screenshot below). HypecCam 3
allows you to specify the desired video rates in frames per second for record,
playback and key frame respectively.

Audio Options
In this section you can select any audio device presented in your system, audio
compressor, output format and folder.
Extra Options
In this section you can configure the following capturing options- capture
layered windows, mouse cursor and overlay. Additionally you can add a
‗starburst‘ on mouse click (by specifying star size and left or right click star
color) and enable mouse click sound volume.

Interface
This section allows you to customize some basic options such as behavior
of the program during a recording, interface language and hotkeys. Hypercam 3
offers default hotkeys, namely, F2: record and pause, F3: stop recording and F4:
screenshot. But you can change them and assign any desired combination of
hotkeys.
Screen Notes
The program has a very comfortable and well-thought feature for adding
text notes to the captured video files. You can easily configure text font, size and
color, use bold, italic and underlined letters, specify the position of the text, add
macro, data, time, etc. (see the screenshots below).

Video Edit
The program has a special built-in tool for editing captured videos. With
its help you can perform basic actions with video files, for instance, join two
separate video files together, split a video into several parts or cut out selected
fragments, etc.
Task №1. Working with the HyperCam program.
1) Launch HyperCam 3 from the desktop icon or from the Start menu -> All

Programs -> HyperCam 3 -> HyperCam

The main window of the program will be opened.
2) Click on the "Options" tab to open HyperCam settings.
3) You will see the "Video" tab of HyperCam 3 where you can choose the
certain settings.

4) Choose devices you need for your record.

If you would like to record only the sound of your system (goes usually from
speakers) please set "System audio" setting in the "Device" combobox.
If you would like to record the system sound and your annotations from the
microphone, leave the default setting - "System audio + Microphone".
If you would like to record sound goes to microphone select in the combobox
the appropriate setting - "Microphone".
7) Click OK button to save your settings and close the "Options" window.
8) Choose the area for the recording (using Region, Window or Full Screen)
buttons.

9) Click the "Record" button to start the record or the F2 hot key.
10) To stop the record click on the "Stop" button of the tray tool bar of
HyperCam or F3 hot key.

Your record will appear in the "Recent records" window of HyperCam. Now
you can open it using "Browse" button or edit it in the HyperCam Media Editor
using "Edit" button.

Task №2. How to Record a Screen Video.

Step 1. Start HyperCam 3.
You should see its main window opened. Before you can start
recording a video, you should select one of the available capture
areas. You can read more about different capture modes here, but
now simply click the "Region" button. Marked as

Step 2. Define the region of your screen you would like to

record. Simply point the upper-left corner of the region
with the mouse and click to confirm, then resize to the
bottom-right corner and click again. You should see a red
border indicating the region of your choice:

Step 3. Now click the big red button to start recording the video. Also remember
the hot key for the start/pause action - F2. Press it at any time to pause the
recording or resume it again. Once the recording starts, you'll notice that
HyperCam window has disappeared from the screen (obviously, you don't want
it in your video) and has minimized to a HyperCam Toolbar:
Step 4. Now do some actions within the capture area - move your mouse back
and forth, open some applications, or whatever else you want to record. To
pause the recording, press F2.
Step 5. Now as the video recording is paused, move
your mouse to the HyperCam Toolbar and click the
Stop button. You can also simply press F3 which is the
default hotkey for the Stop action. You will see your
newly created video in the Recent records section,
where you can replay, browse or edit it in HyperCam
Media Editor.

Task №3. How to Capture a Full-Screen Video.

HyperCam 3 supports several capture modes: a full-screen capture, a region
capture and a window capture.
A full-screen capture is convenient when you need to show what is happening
on the entire screen area, for example, to clearly display the interaction of
applications.
To capture a full-screen area, follow these steps:
Step 1. Run HyperCam if it is not yet running. You should see the main window
of the program. Then, click the Fullscreen button to select the Full-screen
capture mode. In this mode the entire screen area is recorded.
Step 2. Click the Record button (the big red one) or press F2 to start recording
the video.
Step 3. When you have finished, press F2 to pause the recording, or F3 to stop
the recording and save the video stream onto your hard disk as an AVI file.

Task №4. How to Add Screen Notes to Your Video.

Recording a screen video is fine, but you often need to add some notes to it, you
know - focus the attention on some details, mention unclear matters, comment
your actions etc. You may also want to add subtitles to your video to help
foreign audience understand your voice comments.
All of the above is available in HyperCam. Here is how you can add screen
notes to your records.
Step 1. Before recording a video you should create screen notes. Switch to the
Screen notes section. This is the list of available screen notes. Now it is empty,
so click the Add button to create a new screen note.

Step 2. You should see that a note

has appeared on the screen and in
the list of screen notes: Double-
click a note to edit its text and type
"My first screen note" there. Also
note, that you can adjust the note
with the right-click pop-up menu.

Step 3. Set up the position and the size of the note with the mouse.

Step 4. Now you need to define the way this note is shown. There are two
options here: you can either bring it up manually with a hotkey, or set it to
appear automatically on timer. Both options require additional configuration, so
select the note in the list and click the Edit button . The Screen note setup
window appears. Let's setup a hotkey for our first note.
Step 5. Look at the highlighted area on the above picture. Here you can assign a
hotkey that will trigger the note on the screen. Let's say it will be Ctrl+F. Focus
the edit-box and press Ctrl then F on your keyboard.
Step 6. We want our note both to display and to hide off the screen when we
press the hotkey, so check both options:

Step 7. Save the settings by pressing the OK button . Now you can bring
it up at any time while recording your video with the Ctrl+F hotkey.

2. Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere Pro is a video editing application developed by Adobe
Systems and published under the Creative Creative Cloud licensing program.
The Adobe Premiere Workspace
This tutorial provides an introduction to the most important features of the
Adobe Premiere workspace. The screenshot below shows the default workspace.
This workspace can be customised in many ways — you can rearrange the
panels and use specialist panels for different tasks (audio mixing, titles, etc). For
now we will stick to the default workspace.

Customizing the Adobe Premiere Workspace

Premiere allows you to customize and save the layout of your workspace. This is
useful for saving configurations for different editors or different types of project.
To save the current workspace, go to Window > Workspace > Save
Workspace.

Premiere also comes with several pre-defined workspaces to get you started
(Editing, Effects, Audio and Color Correction).

Adobe Premiere Pro workspace is divided into five panels:

The Project Panel
The project panel is where you store all the elements needed to create your
finished video. It can contain individual video clips, audio clips, titles, photos
and graphical images. When you import new items they appear automatically in
the project panel.

The project panel also contains sequences, which include all the data in a
particular timeline. When you create a new project, the project panel contains a
single sequence called Sequence 01.
The Monitor Panel
The monitor panel is where you view video clips and edited video sequences.
The left screen is the source monitor, which allows you to preview clips and
make adjustments before adding them to the timeline.

The right screen is the program monitor, which shows you the active timeline.
Controls under each monitor allow you to scroll through the video and set edit
points.
Info Panel
The info panel, which shows information about the selected item.

The Timeline Panel

The timeline panel is where your video takes shape. By dragging items from
the project panel or source monitor and placing them in the desired order, you
create a sequence of clips and events which play in the timeline from left to
right.

With items in the timeline, you can:

Adjust edit points, making clips shorter or longer, or stretch them over time.
Create multiple layers of video, e.g. titles, superimposed images, etc.
Create multiple layers of audio, e.g. voiceovers, music, etc.
Add transitions, filters, special effects, etc.
You can also create "nested" sequences to help keep the timeline manageable.
When you have finished editing the timeline, you can play it back in real time or
export it in a variety of formats.

Adobe Premiere Tools Panel (Toolbox)

The toolbox contains common tools used for editing clips in the timeline. Click
on any of the buttons (or use the keyboard shortcuts) to select each tool. The
default tool is the selection tool.
When you select a tool the mouse pointer will usually change to a new icon to
represent the tool when held over the timeline panel. In some cases you can
change the behaviour of a tool by holding down a modifier key such as the Shift
key.

Adobe Premiere Import

Premiere allows you to import a single video clip, multiple clips, or an entire
folder of clips. You can also import a variety of audio and still image files,
including sequences of images and layered Photoshop files.
Select File > Import from the main menu.
To import a single file: Locate and select the file, then click Open.
To import multiple files: Hold down the Control key to select multiple files,
then click Open.
To import a folder of files: Locate and select the folder you want to import,
then click Folder. A new bin is created in the Project window, containing the
contents of the folder.
Note: You can also import files by dragging them from Windows Explorer into
the Premiere Project window.

Exporting Video from Adobe Premiere Pro

This section shows how to export video clips using Adobe Premiere Pro. You
can export in a variety of formats and it's important to choose the right one for
the job.
Export options can be found in the menu under File > Export.
Important: Before exporting, make sure you have the correct panel and source
selected in the workspace. For example, select the timeline panel to export the
timeline, or select the preview monitor to export a clip shown there. If the export
option is grayed out, you don't have a clip or timeline selected.
AVI: To export as an AVI file, choose File > Export > Movie.
This creates a large file but is the best quality. Use this option for mastering
purposes or if you want to be able to edit the video later. For maximum quality,
export as an uncompressed AVI (warning: very large files will result!)
DVD: For output to DVD, choose File > Export > Export to Encore. This sends
the selection to the separate Encore application for DVD authoring.

3. Windows Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker is a video editing software by Microsoft. It is a
part of Windows Essentials software suite and offers the ability to create and
edit videos as well as to publish them on OneDrive, Facebook, Vimeo,
YouTube, and Flickr.

Work with Movie Maker:

Three key divisions
Movie maker's window has three key divisions mainly the panes, the preview
monitor and the story board. The panes provide the working space and include
the task, the collections and the contents pane. The storyboard and the time line
allow users to create and edit projects. The preview monitor allows a user to
view and analyze the progress of the movie in making.
Setting aspect ratio
The aspect ratio determines how the published movies are displayed on the
screen. Aspect ratio is quotient of length to width of the resulting movies. To set
your preferred aspect ratio: click on "Options" from tools, and then click on
advanced tab and then select preferred ratio. A ratio of 4:3 is best for full screen
displays while the 16:9 is best for wide screens.

Changing .wlmp file into other recognized video formats

All projectile files Window's movie maker have a .wlmp extension.
Unfortunately, not many media players recognize this format. This simple
process will help convert all .wlp files into other recognized formats. Click on
―Open Project‖ from file tab on movie maker. Locate the .wlmp file. Go back to
file, click on ―Save Movie‖. Choose your preferred output movie.
Trimming videos
Open the Movie Maker. On the ―Home‖ tab, proceed to ―Add‖ group and click

the movie.

Arranging video clips on timeline

Simply click on the object to be moved and drag it to where you want it appear

Splitting a video into two

You can split a larger video into smaller
bits. You can then reorganize the bits in
a sequence. Open the Movie Maker and
locate the video to be split. Click on the
clip then drag the playback indicator up
to the point where you wish to split the
video. Under ―Video Tools‖ on the
Ribbon, click ―Edit‖ tab under the
―Editing group‖. Navigate to split to
complete the process.
