Since football is the most popular game in the world, the best football
player is Pele. He was born on October 23, 1940 in Brazil. He was a Negro,
who had earned the name of ‘Black Diamond of Football’. He used to play
Soccer-barefoot in the street with a football made from cotton cloth. Once he
stole peanuts from a goods train and bought a leather football after selling
them.
Pele became a famous football player under the coaching of Waldima
Brito, the famous football instructor. He took part in the world football
competition of 1962, 1966 and 1970. He scored 1216 goals in 1254 matches.
It was a world record for a single football player.

Science. After Shiva got admissions into an engineering college and
chose Computer Science, Krishna signed Shiva's admission form as his
guardian and continued paying the fees. He also paid for his CAT

Ans: Recycle: Recycling is the process of converting the waste

material. By recycling, we can reduce air, water and soil pollution.
We can save the environment by proper recycling instead of throwing

Reuse: Reuse means using gadgets that has still some life left. We
can help the environment by reusing the gadgets instead of throwing
in a trash. 01
(e) Describe Arunima Sinha in two to three sentences.
Ans: Arunima Sinha is the first Indian amputee to climb the Mount
Everest. Among women amputee, she is the second one to climb the
Mount Everest. In 2015, she was awarded the Padma Shri, the 4th
highest civilian award in India. 02

(f) State any four qualities of Mr. Lal that have inspired you.
Ans: The qualities of Mr.Lal that have inspired me are his efficiency
in managing the team, ability to delegate, multitasking skills,
leadership skills, talent and his transition from a doer to a mentor. 02

(g) What mistake did the HR people realise in recruitment ?
The HR people realized, mistakes were happening when people were
recruited based only on marks. They realised that candidates with
'good marks' were not qualified for 'work'. They also realised that
some candidates who scored good marks did so because of good
'memory' rather than intelligence. In some cases, it was just luck.
What they studied was asked in the exams. 02

(a) Narrate the experience of Arunima during Mount Everest
Expedition.
Ans: Arunima started her expedition on 1st April, 2013.When she
entered the death zone- 3500 feet from the top of Mount Everest- the
most difficult terrain started. She saw dead bodies of mountaineers
scattered all around. A Bangladeshi mountaineer took his last breath
in front of her eyes. She was frightened but she kept on moving
anyhow. She told herself that neither can she go back from here nor
she can die before reaching the summit. Seeing Arunima struggling
immensely with the artificial leg, her Sherpa kept on advising her to
return back. But she did not give up. She told him that she can‟t die
before conquering Mount Everest. Thereafter, he started motivating
her for the rest of the expedition. She reached the summit of Mount
Everest on 21st May 2013- exactly after 52 days. When Arunima
reached the top, everything changed; she raised the Indian tricolour
and placed some pictures of her idol Swami Vivekananda next to it. 04

Ans: The Tata group is India‟s biggest business empire. The Tata
group‟s global footprint spans more than 100 countries in six continents.
Founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868, the Tata group is a global enterprise,
headquartered in India, comprising over 100 independent operating
companies. In 2016-17, the revenue of Tata companies was $100.39
billion. These companies collectively employ over 695,000 people. With
its pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit, the Tata group has several
industries of national importance in India: steel, hydro-power, hospitality
and airlines. Tata‟s business empire include TCS, India‟s first software
company, Tata Motors, which made India‟s first indigenously developed
car- the Tata Indica and the smart city car- the Tata Nano, Tata Steel
Europe, etc. Tata had several new businesses from airlines to hotels,
trucks to locomotives, soda ash and other heavy chemicals to
pharmaceuticals and financial services, tea and air conditioning to

Ans. The word „Samaritan‟ means a charitable or helpful person. In a
way, the word itself defines the following qualities of a „Good
Samaritan‟.
1. Philanthropy: A Good Samaritan always does something good for
the welfare of others.
2. Selflessness: He/she helps others selflessly. They do not think
about their trouble or even profit.
3. Devotion /Dedication: A good Samaritan is devoted to the work he
/she does. In spite of odds, they perform their moral
responsibilities with dedication.
4. Consistency: He/she has consistency in the work being done.
Come what may, they will never compromise on their chosen work
for a good cause.
5. Love and affection: A good Samaritan helps others and works for
them out of the love and the affection they feel for them. The work
is not done for the name sake.
6. Nurture: A good Samaritan nurtures the needy, the underprivileged
just like parents. He/she truly cares for them. 04

(d) Explain the positive steps that students can take to stop e-waste
pollution.
Ans: Every time you replace one of your electronic devices, it‟s your
responsibility to be sure your old one gets recycled properly. Ideally, we
should consume less. We should not get pulled into the hype of new
technology. If you want something, try to find a gently-used version
first. When you have an expired product, take the time to find a

teachers, course, curriculum and other activities. I gradually started

Ans: Electronic waste is a serious problem of the world. Electronic
waste from gadgets and devices includes dangerous chemicals like lead,
cadmium, beryllium, mercury and brominated flame retardants. When
we dispose off gadgets and devices improperly, these hazardous
materials have a high risk of polluting the air, contaminating soil and
leaching into water sources. Therefore, we need to do „E-Waste
Management'. Every time when we replace one of our electronic
devices, it‟s our responsibility to be sure that our device gets recycled
properly and not shipped to third world countries. We should find a
responsible e-waste recycler. We can use a Certified E-Waste Recycler
through the Basel Action Network (BAN) and give them our gadgets for
disposal. We can visit Civic Institutions like local government, schools
and universities for additional responsible recycling options. We can
also search retail options like Best Buy for proper disposal of gadgets.
We can donate our electronics gadgets if it still has life left.

Ans: JRD Tata was a philanthropist who wanted India to be a happy

patron of the arts, JRD was revered by India’s artists, sculptors and
performing artist. Under JRD’s tutelage, the Tatas became the biggest
buyers, promoters and supporters of the art world in India. As a
philanthropist, JRD Tata built up the tremendously active Tata
Charitable Trust and kept it alive. Entrepreneurs like Sir Homi Mody, Sir

when the doctor revealed that Anish's brain had been severely injured,
and that in a couple of hours, he would collapse. He wanted Anish back
to life.
So he shifted Anish immediately to a leading hospital. The neurosurgeon
there examined him and decided to go for a surgery. Alone he was
waiting outside the operation theatre at 2. 30 am and weeping

Many wild thoughts like "In what state is he going to be after the

speak again? Is he going to walk, or will he have to use the wheelchair?”
ran in his minds. That night was so dreadful for him and his family that

(d) Summarise the struggle of Shiva.


Ans: Shiva with his elder sister Yogeshwari used to sell the garlands
at traffic signals and other places after their school. Despite all the hard
work his family members did, money was insufficient. Therefore Shiva
used to sell the newspapers.
Though Krishna paid Shiva’s school fees, Shiva’s family
needed cash for rent and food among other things. So he continued
working and studying hard. After his schooling, he got admission in
Computer Science Engineering. He studied hard and scored good marks.
Then he gave up their flower work. Now, after classes, Shiva began
working late into the night as a salesman in an electronics shop. At one
point, Shiva left his job at the electronics store and started a computer
repair service with a friend. With all this, Shiva sometimes reported late
for college. Being tired, he would take a nap in the class. Classmates
giggled and teachers rebuked him.
Meanwhile, from newspaper delivery boy in the
mornings, Shiva graduated to sub agent with about 50 customers. His
earnings increased substantially, but the workload had shot up too. He
was still delivering papers but also had to visit homes and offices to
collect payments and acquire more customers.
On Krishna's suggestion, he also enrolled in a CAT
coaching class. However after attending a few lectures, Shiva realized
that he didn't have the time to attend the lectures. So he kept taking their
notes and old CAT question papers to study at home. Krishna prepared
him for mock interviews of IIM and group discussions. Together, they
spent hours preparing for IIM admission. He got admission in IIM. After

(b) Read the following passage and answer the questions given below :
Stephen and Joseph Montgolfier were papermakers, but they had been
interested in flying for many years. One night in 1782, Joseph noticed
something that gave him an idea. He was sitting in front of fire when he saw
some small pieces of scorched paper carried up the chimney.
Soon afterwards the brothers made an experiment. They lit a fire under a
small silk bag which was opened at the bottom. At once the bag rose to the
ceiling.
After this, they made many more experiments, both indoor and in the
open air. Then they built a huge balloon of linen and paper. On June 5th, 1783
they sent this balloon up in the village of Annonay, where they lived. The first
ascent in England was made on September 15th, 1784 by Vincent Lunardi, an
Italian who was living in England. Lunardi took off in a hydrogen balloon
from a field in London, taking with him a Pigeon, a cat and a dog. He had to
come down to leave the cat which was suffering from the cold, but afterwards
flew on to Standon in Hertforshire.

gave him a long hope. Tata says that as a chairman, his main 02

(b) Describe the preparation stage of Shiva for IIM examination.


Ans: On Krishna’s suggestions, Shiva began preparing for IIM's
common admissions test (CAT). On Krishna's suggestion, Shiva enrolled
in a CAT coaching class. However after attending a few lectures, Shiva
realized that he didn't have time to attend the lectures. So he kept taking
their notes and old CAT question papers to study at home. Krishna also
prepared him for mock interviews and group discussions. Shiva kept
himself updated with current affairs by regularly watching the news and
reading. Finally he got offers from six IIMs. Taking a student loan,
Shiva joined IIM Calcutta in 2013.

Ans: The initial days of Shiva were full of hardships. Shiva was
studying in Maruthi Vidyalaya -an English-medium ICSE school. He
used to deliver newspapers to earn a living. Shiva also used to sell the
garlands at traffic signals and other places after his school with his elder
sister Yogeshwari.
Later, he started working as a salesman in an electronics shop. At
one point, Shiva left his job at the electronics store and started a
computer repairs service with a friend. Meanwhile, from newspaper
delivery boy in the mornings, Shiva graduated to sub agent with about
50 customers. His earnings increased substantially, but the workload had
shot up too. He was still delivering papers but also had to visit homes
and offices to collect payments and acquire more customers.
He studied hard and scored good marks in Computer Science. He
was also selected by Wipro as a software engineer. However on
Krishna's suggestion, Shiva enrolled in a CAT coaching class. He kept
taking their notes and old CAT question papers to study at home.
Krishna prepared him for mock interviews of IIM and group discussions.
Together, they spent hours preparing for IIM admission. He got
admission in IIM Calcutta in 2013. After his IIM, he got a job as a
deputy country manager in Sri Lanka in an e-commerce company

(b) State the contribution of Gurmeet Singh as a philanthropist.


Ans: Gurmeet Singh is a Philanthropist who selflessly renders his
services to the abandoned patients of the ‘Lawaris Ward’. For the
abandoned patients, he and his brother keeps 10 per cent of their
monthly earnings in the donation box at his home. He provides
medicines to the patients who cannot afford it and also gave them food
every day. He also paid for expensive tests, scan and even chemotherapy
for cancer patients. He started these two decades ago when a woman,
with tears in her eyes, came at Singh’s shop carrying a badly scalded boy
in her arms. He took them to Government Hospital in Patna and found
that there was nobody to treat him. He saw that the poor and the
abandoned were affected badly. He was very angry and then he decided
to do something about it. He started giving them medicines and food
every day. For abandoned patients, he has not gone on vacation for 13
years. He is regular in his help and he leaves his modest apartment
around nine every evening for the patients. He paid money for
abandoned patients’ medicines and treatments that were not provided by
the hospital. He takes rotis, vegetables, salad, eggs and curd to feed to
his patients from eateries and feeds the abandoned patients. He played
various roles like nurse, doctor, provider and kin to these abandoned
patients. So his entry in the ward always brings a smile on the weary

Ans: Christiano Ronaldo is a Real Madrid star and Portugal football
team's captain. He was born in a very poor family. His mother was a
cook and his father was a kit man in a local football club. He used to
practice daily from morning to night. Ronaldo had to go away from his
family as he got an offer for better training. He was depressed and
home sick. He used to call home and cry daily. He wanted to quit but his
determination was stronger than his self-doubt and focused all his energy
in improving his game. Cristiano Ronaldo got selected for Portugal's
most famous club "Sporting Lisbon" and even got selected for the top 11
in the Euro 2004 squad for Portugal at the age of 19. 04
(d) Describe the suffering of Anish after the accident.
Ans: After the accident, Anish had a severe brain injury. His condition
was not good when he was hospitalised. The right side of his skull was
cut open and kept in his abdomen for future use. The only movements in
his body were that of his head, which moved right and left and his eye
balls.
After four years also, Anish’s condition remained unchanged. He
was unconscious. His hands and legs were in the stage of contracture.
Tube was inserted in the neck for breathing. A catheter, a flexible
feeding tube was placed through the abdominal wall and into the
stomach for feeding. Sometimes he moved his mouth as if to say 'love
you' in response to his father’s 'love you'. His family members played his
favourite music for him but there was no expression on his face. They
tried all kinds of treatment techniques, but nothing actually bettered his
condition.
Four and a half years after the accident, one day Anish had a
problem with his uro-catheter. His family members took him to the
hospital. There he developed a breathing difficulty and he died. 04

(b) Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:
Stephen and Joseph Montgolfier were papermakers, but they had
been interested in flying for many years. One night in 1782, Joseph
noticed something that gave him an idea. He was sitting in front of fire
when he saw some small pieces of scorched paper carried up the
chimney.
Soon afterwards the brothers made an experiment. They lit a fire
under a small silk bag which was opened at the bottom. At once the bag
rose to the ceiling.
After this, they made many more experiments, both indoor and
in the open air. Then they built a huge balloon of linen and paper. On
June 5th, 1783 they sent this balloon up in the village of Annonay, where
they lived. The first ascent in England was made on September 15th,
1784 by Vincent Lunardi, an Italian who was living in England. Lunardi
took off in a hydrogen balloon from a field in London, taking with him
a Pigeon, a cat and a dog. He had to come down to leave the cat which
was suffering from the cold, but afterwards flew on to Standon in
Hertforshire.
