11 English Exam Review 2023

Grade 11 English-Final Exam: Wednesday June 7th, 8:50 t0 12:00

The final English exam will be broken down into five components:

1. Punctuation and Spelling- 5%


2. Vocabulary-5%
3. Media-10%
4. Literature-70% (Short Stories, Macbeth, Pride and Prejudice)
5. Poetry Sight Passage 10%

The following is a study guide for each area. You should make study notes for each area and
follow the instructions on what and how to prepare for each section.

SPELLING AND PUNCTUATION

1. Spelling Errors(words that sound-alike and look-alike.)


2. Sentence Fragments (how to fix them by using colon, semi-colon or punctuating and
capitalizing for a new sentence)
3. Punctuation and Possession, Apostrophes and The Use of the Comma(Grammar Edits)

Review the handouts we did on spelling and punctuation.

There will be one question on the exam. In the question you will be asked to make corrections in
a paragraph or some sentences containing errors. These will include sound-alike and look-alike
words, run-on sentences, and punctuation errors. You will make corrections to the paragraph or
the sentences. The question will tell you how many errors to look for.
For example: 40 errors each worth ½ mark each.
This section will be Application.

VOCABULARY
1. Vocabulary from the novel Pride and Prejudice.
These will be either true or false, or multiple choice.
Study the vocabulary assigned from your chapter questions.
This section will be Knowledge.

MEDIA
1. Analysis of a print advertisement
You will be given an advertisement you have not seen before to analyze.
Make sure you are familiar with the three main components of deconstructing media (the
media triangle).
Review your media essays and the article in Imprints entitled “Looking at the Media.”
Review the print ads and commercials you analyzed and presented in class as examples.
This section will be Thinking, Application and Communication.
`MACBETH

1. Identification and Explanation of Quotations (Spotting Questions)


State the speaker and to whom they are speaking, explain the circumstances and state the
significance. You may also be asked to translate the passage into modern English. There
may be some choice in this section.
This section will be Knowledge, Thinking, Application and Communication.

2. Formal Essay or Short Answer focusing on themes/characters of the play.


Make review notes on the following:
 The characterizations of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and the witches.
 Macbeth’ fatal decisions as the tragic hero
 The influence of others on Macbeth’s tragic decisions
 The theme of justice
 The role of the supernatural in the play
 Prominent speeches and soliloquies of the main characters
 Dramatic devices (foreshadowing. suspense, dramatic irony, etc).
Write an essay outline or practice essay of the topics above by choosing three
examples from the text to support each of these topics.
Study prominent speeches, tests, scene questions and re-read important
sections.
K, T C, A as per the essay rubric. You will see this rubric on the exam.
Read it so you know how you will be evaluated before you begin writing.

SHORT STORIES
1. Short Answers or Multiple Choice (2 K marks and 2 C marks)
This section will be Knowledge and Communication.
You will be asked to provide an example of the features of short stories from the
stories we read.
Make review notes on the following:
 Review the features of short stories (character, theme, plot, setting, etc.)
 Re-read the short stories we studied and the answers to the questions we did.
 Review your charts for each story and the unit test.
 Write out examples of the features from each of the stories by writing these
out as study notes (i.e-Walter Mitty-Character-timid, unfulfilled, easily
influenced by others, pushover.)
Pride and Prejudice

1. Identification and Explanation of Quotations


(State the speaker, explain the circumstances and state the significance.)
There may be some choice here.
This section will be Knowledge, Thinking, Application and Communication.

2. Formal Essay on theme or character (long essay)


Review your chapter questions for the entire novel.

Make Review Notes on the following:


 Views of marriage
 Dating and Courtship
 Gender-the roles of men and women in 19th Century society
 Class
 Character comparisons (how are they alike, how are they different according to the
themes)
 The novel’s title as the major theme-Pride and Prejudice

POETRY SIGHT PASSAGE


You will be asked to read a poem and answer questions. This will assess your reading
comprehension and your ability to apply your knowledge of poetic devices to a new poem. You
will not have read this poem before.

Review your definitions of poetic devices


Make sure you understand and can spot all of the poetic devices. Look at your handouts on these
and read over some of the poems we studied to remind yourself of some of these examples.
Knowledge, Thinking, Application, and Communication will be broken down for each type
of question.

OTHER HELPFUL HINTS…


The major essay could be a comparison of the novel and play.
Think about what characters or themes could be compared.
